Old, Rotten, Rusting and Dirty
I hired Hale Waika and Hale Wila to accommodate my wife and me, our children and our grandchildren. The only respect in which this accommodation was a success was that everyone got a bed (although, it must be admitted, the kids enjoyed the feral pigs, chickens, roosters, donkeys and horse which seemed to come with the rental. Noise levels were high: behind one house, from the bush; in front of the other, from the road.
In their previous lives I suspect that these houses have been a rest home for the old and/or disabled: nothing else accounts for the ramps on both houses and the carport which connects them. The houses are in very poor condition, with major maintenance now long overdue: rotting door frames, swollen skirtings, all need replacing. Much simply didn't work or had been crudely repaired: for example, a bedside lamp switch had been taped together in an unsuccessful attempt at repair - the lamp flickered and sizzled but didn't produce a continuous light stream. The fridge door handle in one house came off in my hand. There were no visible smoke detectors or fire extinguishers. The standard of supplied cooking ware was disgracefully bad, featuring pots and pans with distorted bases and whose "non-stick" qualities had ceased long ago.
The overwhelming problem, however, was dirt. These are not clean houses. The skirtings were all filthy. The ceramic cooktops had not been cleaned. The barbeque was too filthy even to clean.
We left a day early....
I could not recommend these two properties to anyone other than a Health and Safety Inspector - they need close examination.
I was completely confused when I read this review as I was in contact with Peter, by his request through his son. I followed up with them daily while they were at my home and only received good comments. Peter, though his son, texted me on the last day that they wanted to experience Waikiki on their last night as they all had very early flights the next morning. He ended the text that they really enjoyed the staying with me. Peter never said anything before leaving and I wished them a safe return home. After receiving the review I tried to contact Peter directly to ask about the things he wrote with no response. I decided to try to contact his son, as he was the person I was asked to communicate with, and called him to find out if he knew why his father wrote the review? He said "I don't know why my dad did that as we all absolutely loved the house!" I tried again to contact him with no response. I am disappointed as I do all I can to make my guests stay as I Love Hawaii and want my guests to have a great experience. This is the third bad review I've received from a guest who booked though an outside booking company and not directly through me. I wish he would have contacted me directly as I would have done all in my power to make his stay better.
Could be nice. Disappointing for us.
We rented these properties along with 4 others for a huge family reunion in January 2017. These homes were definitely lacking in a few areas. We spent the first day going to Walmart buying pillows, pillowcases, towels, and a broom to make our stay more pleasant. The homes were clean. But most people don't enjoy sleeping on a pillow sham and using shoddy towels. For not much money there could be decent towels, linens, a living room rug in house #1, a coffee table and a decent dining set that would seat at least 4 or 6. House #2 has a tiny bistro table for its dining set. We had small children and had to seat them on the floor to eat. Also, be aware that the traffic noise from the highway is LOUD! It is a highway, not a country road running in front of the house. And the chickens are plentiful. We concluded the house next door must feed and nurture them. So unless you want to be awakened by roosters at 3:45 a.m., bring earplugs!!! Could be a decent property, but if we visit again, I'll look for a different place.
I am sorry you didn't enjoy my country home. I offer simple Hawaii home at a great price. We are in the country and have "wild" chickens. I keep my rates low by keeping it simple. I am sorry my furniture and furnishings, as shown in the photos online, weren't to your approval. I think you may be looking for a hotel experience rather than what
I offer. I would agree with your statement, you should find accommodations that would meet your expectations.
Great experience, highly recommended
Our family of six adults stayed at the Hale Waika property over the Christmas Holiday and really enjoyed our stay. The house is fully furnished, comes with 2 bathrooms (rare) and had some nice extras like beach chairs and an umbella. Each bedroom had a fan, and a large wall mounted air conditioner is in the living room. A washer/dryer, located in a breeze-way connecting Hale Waika with the other rental unit behind it, is shared by both rental properties. There was enough parking for our two rental cars and the two rental cars of our neighbors in the other unit. The Hale Waika property fronts on the Kamehameha Hwy, a busy two-lane road, but we were not bothered by traffic noise; others might, however. Directly across the street is the Kokololio Park with its beautiful beach. The first morning we were there we literally took our coffee to the beach. Laie is a mellow, coastal community, which we fell in love with. Groceries, liquor, pharmacy, gas, and a small movie theater are nearby. Our only very minor complaint is that there were only five chairs at the kitchen table for the six of us. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hale Waika and recommend it to others looking for a safe, comfortable home away from home in one of the worlds most beautiful places. We would rent this property again.
Loved the location.
Loved the location of house. We were a party of eighth and everyone loved the house. Some might not like the traffic but we enjoyed watching the traffic after the Polynesian Show around 9pm. The first day of our arrival was very humid, but Thomas brought us new fans the next day and that was all we needed the entire eight days we stayed. House was clean, spacious and I loved the washer and dryer, so I suggest not to pack a lot of clothes, because you can always wash. Everything is really close by, the Polynesian Center, North Shore, Beaches, stores, and the Macadamia Nut Farm as well as the Koalua Ranch. Will definitely contact Thomas in the future for this rental. Thanks.
Great little place on the North Shore
We stayed here with my family (me, hubby and my three young children 4, 2 and 5 months) along with my in laws. The pictures posted is exactly what you get, no surprises! It is a very clean house and had everything we needed. Thomas was very receptive to questions and concerns we had. The dryer did breakdown near the end of our trip however he worked on getting someone to have a look and fix it in 2 days. I think the screen door by the kitchen had a small hole somewhere as flies would come in and buzz around the kitchen whenever we opened the window. One thing i may suggest is that dead bolt locks be installed as my kids were able to open the doors easily and we were concerned they might help themselves out. We just moved the couches and chairs in front of the door at night just to be sure they wouldn't wander out.
Thank you so much for staying at my home. I appreciated you and your family as you took great care of my home. I know as a parent my children are my world and appreciate the suggestions as I am always looking for ways we can improve. I am glad you took the time to share your experience and suggestions and hope you and your family will be able to see them implemented when you return in the near future.
Travelled from Western Australia not knowing what to expect but what you see in the photos is what you get. The house was great, perfect location from the beach & park - only down side was the amount of traffic on the main highway going past - but if you shut the windows and door to blocks out majority of it. The family loved it and our back neighbours in the other rental house were from New Zealand (which we thought was hilarious) we had a blast! Would highly recommend to everyone and can't wait to return! We fell in love with Laie, Hawaii & the people thanks Thomas for a great stay
I really appreciated Andrea and her family as they were very easy to communicate and deal with. They took great care of the home and were absolutely amazing as I had to fly off to a family emergency, in Australia, before their arrival. Having to communicate at such distances was made easy by Andreas easy going and patient attitude and understanding. I am so glad you allowed us to host you while in Hawaii and look forward to having you return!
