About Ruth Altes
We moved to the beautiful and special area here in Mt. Shasta full time about 2 years ago from Sonoma County. We have been travelling to this area for the past 7 years when we purchased the chalet for our use as a vacation home. We knew the area was special and was the place we wanted to raise our two young boys so we built a new house and opened up our wonderful chalet for others to enjoy.
Ruth Altes purchased this Chalet in 2006
Why Ruth Altes chose Mount Shasta
This house is situated on the side of the mountain that we love. We love the landscape and the weather on this side of the mountain, it is typically cooler in the summer and we are fortunate to get our fair share of snow. We don't get the wind that the more western side of Mt. Shasta area gets and we typically get the same snow fall that the ski park enjoys at their base. We are not in the city, have few neighbors and have the mountain as our back yard. We ride our quads, snowmobiles, bikes, horses, and even hike right from the property. We are close enough to town and all of the lakes, streams and rivers that we also enjoy all of the water sports and fishing. We remodeled the house when we bought it in 2006, so it has unique features and has a great layout to accommodate many people.

PERFECT VACATION HOME FOR A LARGE FAMILY
We normally camp around Nevada City every year. This time we wanted to try something new and I am so happy we did. I am very happy I came across your home.
The home truly accommodates large groups. The entire family was very impressed with the look and feel of your home. We loved the decor and the privacy. We loved that everyone had a place to hang out, the kids could play outside and explore the very large yard.
We were so close to Lake Siskiyou, Castle Lake and Heart Lake. We loved that we could take a short ride to a great day at the lakes and come back home and be able to cook and play board games, watch movies and just sit on the patio and enjoy the summer night stars.
Everything worked out beautifully. Your home is very cozy and it made our family vacation and great way to remember in Mt. Shasta.
Thank you so much for allowing us to experience Mt. Shasta in a very comfortable and accommodating home. We hope to repeat the experience but this time during winter.

The perfect week
Couldn’t have asked for anything more. Amazing location with plenty of room for family and friends. Fun exploration around the property for the kiddos. House was very nicely decorated and the kids loved it. If you’re looking for a place to stay and love adventuring, this is the spot. Thank you!
Great and cozy hideaway
Altes Chalet is a great private and cozy place. We thoroughly enjoyed our family get-together. Ruth is very responsive and helpful. Highly recommend this property.
Stay for retreat
It was a good site. Worked well. Only we had to go out to buy toilet paper as the owner said they only supply 2 rolls per bathroom. That is 6 rolls for 13 people for 5 days. So we interrupted our retreat to drive to town and buy our own toilet paper. Also there was no soap or shampoo or other amenities normally found in a rental site. In addition I received a letter letting me know I would get a bad rating by them if I did anything they considered out of line. They basically threatened me having never met me, before we went to the property. We are extremely diligent renters but apparently the owner has some fears that people who rent from her will somehow be bad people and do something wrong. Also when I got there I had to sign a written contract with basically the same rules I had agreed to on line. I do a lot of rentals and have never experienced this before. It was a bit much. I am even afraid I will not get my deposit back or something due to writing this review. I will say though that the owner was very pleasant in our interactions and fair in pricing. It was only this presentation in writing that somehow we were going to misuse her property or cheat her and the petty things like the toilet paper that got to me. If you can overlook that stuff it is a nice place and the owner was fair, at least I hope so.
I was truly shocked by this review and I would absolutely love to know what letter was sent to this guest prior to their arrival. I have a long string of emails on file where I have answered all of her questions. I honestly have no idea what letter she feels that I threatened her with, nor did I say anything to her prior to her stay that said anything about ratings, I am not sure if this is something VRBO sent out prior to her stay without my knowledge? We have rented this house for 5 years with absolutely no complaints about someone not having enough toilet paper. As I explained to the guest, we provide the initial toilet paper, and paper towels for this house which does include two rolls per bathroom. This conversation took place by phone on the first day they were there. We have guests who stay with us for varied lengths of time including sometimes up to a month stay and I would have no idea how much toilet paper a person might use during their stay. I don't think it is practical to expect a house owner to provide an endless supply of toilet paper for an extended stay as I would honestly not have any idea how much a guest may go through. We do provide in all bathrooms and the kitchen hand soap as well as dish soap, dishwasher soap and laundry detergent. In addition to the toilet paper provided we also provide paper towels (2 rolls) as well as coffee filters and of course all linens, sheets, blankets, towels, etc. In addition, there actually is a basket in the main bathroom cabinet that actually does have shampoo, conditioner, lotion and things of this nature in small containers. I am sorry if this guest did not find that basket and expected there to be some shampoo or conditioner in the shower/tub unit but this is not actually a hotel. This is a vacation rental, people generally bring the type and amount of shampoo and conditioner that they prefer, I think that most people actually prefer to bring their own however, for those guests that may forget these items, we do have them in the basket in the bathroom cabinet, it appears that she did not look in the cabinet. I think that perhaps this guest would be better off staying in a hotel on her next retreat outing and though I have no intention of maliciously keeping her deposit as she suggests, I would like to point out that there was a pet that was brought without prior knowledge that she was not charged for. We are a pet friendly house but there is an additional nightly fee for a pet, additional cleaning fee that my cleaner charges me to completely clean the house from pet hair, etc and an additional security deposit that is added on for the pet. NONE of this was added onto this guests stay. So though I have no intention of being petty as she says and keeping her deposit just because of her review, what I can tell you is that I will not rent to her again.
Cabin in the woods
This was a beautiful home nestled in big trees. Very private, peaceful, and beautiful. We rented it so we could all (13 plus a dog) be together for our granddaughters wedding and make the wedding cake, homemade rolls, food for 150 people and celebrate Easter together! Was a perfect house. Kitchen was well equipped and there was space for everyone to spread out. Wood fire was great for chilly April mornings. The owner, Ruth was very accommodating and gracious. We truly enjoyed our stay!
Really enjoyed having a lovely home to stay in with our adult children and grandchildren. So convenient to the Ski Park and going into town. Loved it!
Mount Shasta and surrounding areas have lots to offer from mountaineering on Shasta to exploring caverns, lakes, rivers, waterfalls and streams, fishing, hiking, dog sledding, snowshoeing, ice skating, skiing, boating, tubing, riding ATV's, horseback riding, canoeing and kayaking, if you can dream it up this is the area to do it.
