About Jeff Russell

Our family has vacationed on Big Traverse for over 30 years. When a beachfront property finally became available, 10 years ago, we jumped at the opportunity. We live and work in Rochester MI but love this peaceful private corner of the Keweenaw. While attending Northern Michigan University and Michigan Technological University we fell in love with each other and the area. After several years of hosting friends and family we decided to make this bit of paradise available to others. We hope you will love it too.

Jeff Russell purchased this cottage in 2003

Why Jeff Russell chose Lake Linden

We love the Keweenaw and Copper Country, long walks on the beach, hiking in the Keweenaw, fishing in Rice Lake, kayaking around Louis Point to see bald eagles. The drive along Lake Superior shoreline to Copper Harbor and back through Eagle River is amazing, especially in the fall when the Keweenaw puts on a show. There are great restaurants in Houghton, Hancock and Historic Calumet. There is a lively arts community hidden away nearby. Michigan Tech brings in arts and music, Pine Mountain Music Festival, and the Calumet Theatre is a spectacular venue for live music.

What makes this cottage unique

The cottage has the most private sandy beach on Big Traverse at 300'. Relax and enjoy the view of the Keweenaw and Huron Mountains as the waves gently roll onto the beach. The sunrises over the Big Lake are really spectacular from the living room, if you want to get up that early:) We provide a kayak to explore the bay and enjoy the lake. The cedar sauna is a great way to melt away stress. After your sauna run and dive into Lake Superior to cool off.

Well equipped cottage in a beautiful location!

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our week in the Keewenaw at this cute, well equipped cottage in a beautiful location right on Lake Superior. Everything we needed was there as well as some fun extras, including the kayak, grill, beach fire pit and sauna. We made use of it all and it enhanced our experience. Jeff was very gracious and helpful when we needed it. We got to as many places as we could in a week, Houghton, Hungarian Falls, Horseshoe Harbor, Falls River and just enjoying the beach and Lake Superior. You can't go wrong with this cottage if you enjoy the great outdoors and all its beauty.

Beautifully tranquil setting

  • 5 of 5

This was a family retreat. The cottage and grounds were just right for all. The fire burning sauna was perfect for my Finnish origins. The sand beach was safe for small children. The swings were used frequently. The kayak was an adventure for all. Having a fire ring to use by the lake was wonderful. We even used the indoor wood stove two evenings. Plenty of fire wood is supplied for use during a stay. The house is fully stocked and the only things we needed were groceries. It is just right for a beach cabin get away. I would suggest if you have small children to bring plug covers. There is no Wi-Fi which was fine with us. Also know that cell service that far out is spotty at best. Only about a 20 minute drive into Lake Linden and Hwy. 26 for whatever you may need or want to do. Relaxing was our priority this trip and we accomplished that. Thank you.

Excellent family time - Perfect location!

  • 5 of 5

While I was born in the UP, it had been 40 years since I had been back in the area. We decided to rent a place that would accommodate our whole family when it came time to have my mother's funeral - this was the place.

What an awesome location! I can't imagine being able to find a more perfect setting for peace and rest. Rustic charm and location with all the needed amenities. (My sons and son-in-law thought that the sauna and water were a perfect combination - though, to be truthful, it was still much too cold to spend any time in the water! ) In spite of the cold water, and sometimes cold air, much relaxing time was spent on the near-perfect beach - both walking and sitting.

The owner was very helpful and graciously responded to our many questions prior to the trip. We found the cottage clean and in good repair. The price is reasonable considering what you get for your money. It would be difficult to find a better combination of features or a more accommodating host.

Even though you are definitely off the beaten path while you are at the cottage, it is very easy to access the Houghton/Hancock area; or any of the many little towns on the way. We used it as a convenient base to explore the entire peninsula. We went everywhere from Red Ridge and the Breakers, all the way up to Copper Harbor and down to Rabbit Bay. It was very nice to see the UP once again.

I can't imagine a better setting to experience God's creation! While the reason for the trip was not the happiest; this was the perfect spot for a very tired pastor and his family to rest and recharge. We actually felt sad when it was time to leave. I heartily recommend this place and wouldn't hesitate to stay here again!

Property was very nice & well kept.

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay very much! The cottage was very clean and neat.

The views are breathtaking! -Great location!

The Sauna was the best and we bought our own wood so we could take one every day.

Lake Superior was perfect and we went swimming every day, especially after the sauna! -Very refreshing!

The weather was great so one day we took advantage of the kayak when the lake was pretty smooth.

We would definitely do this again, but hopefully next time we could get it for 2 weeks instead of 1!! :)

Thank you, Jeff, for offering your beautiful cottage for us to enjoy!

Beautiful beach

  • 4 of 5

If you're looking for a place to stay that is secluded and has a wonderful beach, this is the place for you! We enjoyed the beach area several times and the fire pit on the beach most nights. It was well stocked with wood for us to use. The cabin was very clean and pretty much as pictured. We enjoyed the wild blueberries all around the property and loved the blueberry farm just down the road. The owner was very responsive to email inquiries.

However, we didn't realize just how far this cabin was from everything..........it took a lot of time out of our days just getting to places around the area. We also thought this cabin could use some updating. While things were clean, pretty much everything looked worn out and mismatched.

Our week went by way too fast with beautiful weather and lots to see in this area of the U.P.

Owner's Response: Glad you had a good stay and enjoyed the beach. The location is several miles from town and the size of the Keweenaw makes for beautiful drives to and from many scenic locations. The beach is very quite and private because of its location. I am glad you found the cottage clean and well stocked. The beach cottage has furnishings are meant to be cozy and a throw back to simpler times. Thanks again for spending your vacation on the beach in the Keweenaw
