About the property

Excellent scuba diving, snorkeling, fly fishing, beach combing & hikiing

This is in our private home in a gated community on the pristine, quiet east end of Roatan. We are located between Calabash Bight & New Port Royal on the south side. The snorkeling & diving here is excellent, with abundant fish, many types of coral. There are excellent do it yourself bone fishing flats within easy walking distance and we are located between 2 dive sites with an excellent PADI dive instructor close by.

Your ocean front casita is a newly built, compact 2 BR apartment with its own private entrance. There are 2 queen beds, 1 BA, combined kitchen & living area, laundry room & small deck as well as an outdoor grilling area & firepit. This is totally self catering. There is no daily maid service. We do have friendly, outdoor only, watch dogs, cats & employ a full time caretaker/watchman.

We enjoy life here in our own paradise and have few rules: mainly NO illegal drugs and no smoking.

About Chuck or Barb Shogren

We are retired Americans from Minnesota enjoying life here on Roatan. After having traveled for many years, always keeping an eye out for our dream retirement spot, we found it here on beautiful Roatan.

Chuck or Barb Shogren purchased this apartment in 2008

Why Chuck or Barb Shogren chose Calabash Bight

We love the water. We have an unbelievable view which changes by the minute, our own beach, fruit trees. It is so peaceful it soothes the soul!

What makes this apartment unique

Listen to the sound of waves breaking over the reef. Quietly meditate with a cup of coffee in the morning or a drink at happy hour while the trade winds keep you cool. Relax in the hammock with a good book, maybe one about the fascinating pirate history of Port Royal.

Every hour of the day brings a new view. There are do it yourself bone fishing flats within walking distance and local guides can be hired to take you out for a day of fishing. The snorkeling on the pristine reef right off our beach is amazing.

We also have a PADI instructor nearby & stunning dive sites to explore. Check out Leif's website

Roatan Catamaran Adventures is based out of nearby Oakridge and offers top notch snorkeling adventures into Port Royal. Check their website for information & availability.

Guestbook comments from the owner

My stay at Barb and Chuck's casita on the east end of Roatan has been an absolute delight. It's a perfect 2 bedroom apartment 30 feet from the sea. It offers a nice shaded porch and hammock area right outside the door. The barbeque grill is a few steps away. The waves lull me to sleep and the trade winds keep me cool. There is great snorkeling 70 feet from the front door. The laundry and everything you need is right here. You can snorkel and catch your own lobster, or just pay a local to bring you fresh lobster, snapper, or my favorite, barracuda fried in locally made coconut oil. The area is serviced by road, or by water taxi that goes to the stores in the town of Oakridge. Mikey is the best water taxi operator. I have spent a great month here. Chuck and Barb respect my privacy, but are also very warm and welcoming when I stop by. They are willing to help with anything, and we also enjoy sharing some drinks and conversation. Mario is their security and maintenance man who helps with anything you need, and helped me learn a lot about the island. This month has been the most pleasant time I have had for a long time. I strongly recommend staying here and experiencing the real roatan. You will love it. Live the dream.

Relaxing week away from it all

  • 5 of 5

We were desperatly looking for a vacation away from the AI scene and crowds of tourists. We had a very relaxing week at Casa Escondida with exceptional snorkeling right in front of the house. A kayak for two people is at your disposal to paddle out to the edge of the reef where an amazing snorkelling adventure awaits. We felt very welcome by our hosts as well as Mario and his lovely family who were a joy to interact with. Mario is always more than happy to make sure you have everything you need during your stay. Many ex-pats from Canada and the US have made the East end their permanent home and it's a small community so you will often see familiar friendly faces out and about at the local restaurants etc. We went on a half day discovery dive with Leif from Dive Port Royal it was a wonderful first time dive experience for both of us. I cannot insist enough that you rent a 4x4 vehicle if you plan on staying at Casa Escondida because the dirt road with steep hills can be challenging. Thank you so much Chuck and Barb for sharing your little slice of paradise with us. Jennifer and JS

Great Property

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I had a great stay at the house although Barb and Chuck were both out of the country. Mario took very good care of us from walking the flats with us while I fished, walking the path to Calabash Bight pointing out different flora along the way and he even grilled up some chicken for us. It seemed that Chuck had clued the neighbors in that we were coming because everyone stopped by and wanted to make sure we had all we needed. We got a chance to meet some great folks during our stay and feel as if we made some new friends.. Everything went off without a hitch from Mario meeting us at the airport upon our arrival to him setting up of ride back to the airport when we left. Loved to be able to snorkel right off of the beach and be able to fish the flats just a few minutes walk to the east. Once again I would highly recommend staying with Barb and Chuck.

Wonderful stay!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at Casa Escondida for a week this December and it was great! We had everything we needed and the little store in Oak Ridge wasn't too far away. It was the end of the rainy season, so a 4 x 4 was a MUST! Deep Woods Off was also a MUST! Mario and his family were so sweet and helpful, and the snorkeling right off the beach was excellent! We also stayed for a week in Sandy Bay, which was a completely different experience. We loved both sides of the island, but the East End is definitely more rural and peaceful.

My husband and I had the pleasure of staying at Casa Escondida for the month of March this year. We booked this property for its location. We had stayed on the East end of Roatan (north side) last year and really enjoyed the less populated end of the island. Casa Escondida is exactly as described. It was very clean. The beds are comfortable, the kitchen had everything we needed since we prepared most of our own meals (we did eat out at some of the local restaurants as well), bottled water was provided. The water pressure in the shower was good and the shower head was a good height for my tall husband. We were very happy to have access to the washer and dryer. The WiFi was great and we had our own NetFlex to watch movies. Best of all, the beach is 30 steps from the deck! I would recommend water shoes, there are sea urchins and some rocks. The snorkelling right out in front of the property is amazing. You can either swim out to the reef or take the kayak that is provided. Probably my only suggestion to make my visit better, would have been a single kayak. I found the double to difficult to take out myself which I would have done while my husband was off diving. The reef is very healthy and there is a variety of fish. I would also recommend Deep Woods for days when there is no breeze, very helpful in preventing "no-see-um" bites. There are several dogs both from this property and nearby properties. They don't bother you at all and it is fun watching the antics of some of them. The dogs bark if someone they don't know or the local horse and burro (Bubaloo) come wandering along the beach. Chuck is fabulous--we didn't meet his wife Barb, she was in the States. Chuck will pick you up and return you to the airport. Chuck always checked with us before he went to town incase we needed groceries. If we did, we would go along with him. We had some great laughs with Chuck. Chuck even suggested a book he keeps in the casita-- Roatan Odyssey, a good read with East end history. The watchee, Mario was also very helpful. He would light the outside wood grill whenever we wanted to grill supper. He will also arrange for a local fisherman to come by if you are interested in fresh "catch of the day". My husband walked 10 minutes east to a dock that Port Royal Divers--Kathy and Lief--would pick him up. He had amazing dives. I would definitely recommend this if you are looking to get away from it all, would say more but have run out of room!

Amazing views, perfect rental

  • 5 of 5

We booked this rental based on location and previous reviews. My husband and I visited Roatan Jan 3-16, intentionally to look for property. This rental is exactly as descibed but the pictures online do not do it justice. We knew the place did not have a/c, and we didn't need it. The beds were cozy, and the kitchen had eveything we needed. Outdoor living is what the island is all about! Chuck and Barb were wonderful, they took us to some unique bars/resturants and picked us up and returned us to the airport. They were very helpful with questions we had about living on the island. We didn't rent a car, we caught a ride into town with Chuck to hit the grocery store. We also took water taxis to Oakridge. This is a must, very inexpensive and the communities on the water are beautiful. The watchee, Mario helped us with cooking fresh seafood on the outside grill/bbq every night. You definitely need to bring snorkeling gear as the reef is literally right outside the doorstep. We used the kayak frequently, the views of the island from the ocean are amazing. Make sure you bring water shoes as there are lots of sea urchins , we had no problems with them as we brought our own. Please make sure you bring sunscreeen and Deep Woods as there are sand fleas. As long as you keep yourself coated will on beach you will have no problems. We did go to the west end of the island, so happy we did not stay at this end. Way too busy with all the cruise ships coming in, but it was nice to see what it was all about. I would definitely stay here again, but we are moving back in October. We will make it a point to visit Chuck and Barb, they made us feel at home. Cant wait to return, Christine and Jim Pilger.

I left my heart on the East End

  • 5 of 5

Each time I try to write this review, I miss Casa Escondida, Lost Isles and the East End so much that I just don't finish. So here goes...this was our third trip to Roatan and after spending 10 days mid-island, my husband and I tacked on another 5 days to indulge our long held desire to explore the east end. While we had heard rumors of the east end being dangerous, we felt nothing of the sort and several people told us that law enforcement efforts had really cleaned things up from what they were in the past. Chuck met us at Marble Hill Farms and escorted us to his home as it might be a bit tricky to find without that introduction. If you are planning to drive, FWD is the way to go. The casita was clean, exactly as pictured and the nearly constant breeze, along with ceiling and portable fans kept us quite comfortable in July. Chuck was very friendly (Barb was in Europe), extremely knowledgeable about the area and introduced us to Padi instructor, Leif Shaver who took us on 2 extraordinary dives. Leif was fun to be with, a great guide with no macho bs and we had the boat to ourselves. While we have never had a bad dive in Roatan, the corals and sea creatures were noticeably more abundant on the east end. Snorkeling off the beach was also terrific once you got out of the surf zone (not far). Mario, the watchman, gave us a wonderful tour of the East end and together with his wife, Alba, cooked us the finest meal we had on the island -fresh lobster grilled over a driftwood fire. He also hooked us up with Jonathan who took us in his dory from Oakridge, past Jonesville to Hole In The Wall. Aptly named but don't let the name fool you, the food was excellent, the vibe friendly and welcoming. And then there were the dogs and cats! They really made us feel at home (though all stay outside) and it was entertaining to see how well they played together. Only time they barked was when the local itinerant horse and donkey (Bobaloo) wandered down on the beach one night to eat the mangos from the mango tree. Magical Realism at it's best. I highly recommend Chuck and Barb's casita. If you don't want to drive, Chuck will pick you up and return you to the airport for a very reasonable price. A stay at Casa Escondida was a wonderful introduction to the East End and we certainly look forward to returning. Thank you, Chuck for sharing your home, your excellent company and introducing me to Roatan Odyssey, a really fun read on my first trip out east.

Owner's Response: Thanks Lynn It was great having you here. One of the reasons we bought our home here on the east end is because of the real island culture that still remains here. The water taxis still putt around as they did 75 years ago. The cruise boat crowds have taken over the west end of the island. There is little left there that allows people to see how island life was and remains today. The bars and restaurants are not as common as the west end, but they are authentic, and not as expensive. The locals still dive for lobster and fish, and will ask you what type of fish you want before they go out in their dories. There is petty theft everywhere in the world, but we have been here 8 years now, and have not been bothered by any of it. Normally if you are not involved with drugs there is little chance of being a victim of crime. It's always a pleasure when people have an interest in the island and it's history, and we enjoy sharing that with our guests. "Roatan Odyssey" is a great book that we have in the casita for those interested in the island history. It is about the struggles of an Englishwoman and her American treasure hunter husband here on the eat end in the 1960's and 70's. This is where the pirates were based who raided the Spanish who were plundering South America in the 1600's Remnants of their life here can still be found. Anyway, I hope we get to see you again, and thanks for the nice review.
