About the property

Whether for work or fun, this spacious apartment is a home away from home.

This apartment features a living room, home office, bedroom, full bath, kitchenette, laundry room, patio, and backyard. Knotty-pine paneling and wall-to-wall carpeting lend coziness to a three-quarter basement with a private entrance in the historic district of Rosemont, an easy 12-minute walk to the King Street or Braddock Road Metro stations. Nearby Old Town and Del Ray neighborhoods offer a wide variety of restaurants, shops, parks, and galleries.

Named for a Philadelphia Main Line neighborhood, Rosemont is both gracious and safe. This bungalow was built in 1917 from a plan by the Stickley Brothers of Arts and Crafts Movement fame. After a day of touring or working, relax with board games, books, magazines, tv, or enjoy the patio and backyard. From the Metro it's minutes to and from DC and National Airport. Walk to Old Town or catch the free trolley at the King Street Metro. On-street parking does not require a permit.

Walk to a neighborhood cafe, Old Town, a city pool, Whole Foods, Crate and Barrel Outlet, bookstores, tennis court, and parks.

The kitchenette has a mini-fridge, microwave, coffee maker, electric tea kettle, Brita water pitcher, dishes, utensils, coffee, and tea. You control the thermostat and can expect a first aid kit, towels, shampoo, conditioner, hair dryer, clock radio, laundry supplies, wifi, DVD player, and cable tv.

For a $5 service fee plus cost, send a grocery list to have your basics upon arrival.

About Paddy Bowman

My work as a folklorist takes me around the country, and this apartment reflects my eclectic travels. I've loved living here for 20 years and set up Camp Serendipity to help others feel at home while on the road. I am happy to help you plan your stay. The name comes from a painting I bought in rural Louisiana depicting a 1917 fishing camp. It hangs in the apartment's living room and reflects my love of serendipity since my home was built in 1917 and like that old Louisiana camp, this place is also a great getaway spot.

Paddy Bowman purchased this bungalow in 1993

Why Paddy Bowman chose Alexandria

Living on a quiet block equidistant to two Metro stations allows me to get into DC quickly for meetings and for fun and to enjoy neighborhood walks to parks and a new coffee and wine shop, dinner in Old Town, lunch in Del Ray.

What makes this bungalow unique

Older homes have always appealed to me, especially bungalows with big porches, which abound in Rosemont. This has been an ideal home for me.

Camp Serendipity

  • 5 of 5

Our daughter was graduating from GWU. Since she lives in Alexandria, VA we wanted to find something close to her. Camp Serendipity was ideal. About 15 minutes from the Metro and in a lovely, quiet neighborhood. Owner was most accommodating. She even had recommendations for nearby sights, restaurants, etc. It made a for a wonderful trip. We highly recommend Camp Serendipity

Great location and feels like home

  • 5 of 5

We love this location for visiting DC. It's easy to walk to the metro (we have a 4 & 6 year old - takes about 15 minutes with them) and it's wonderful staying in a beautiful neighborhood area. Paddy is a lovely host and very kind. She met us upon arrival and had the place heating (we arrived during a brief cold period) and the extra airbed already set up and ready for my youngest to hop right into. The apartment was spacious, had plenty of towels & linens, and the beds were comfortable. It was also nice having Metro cards available that you can easily load money onto at the station for the fare you need, one less thing I had to think about.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much, you all were great travelers. Sorry you had to brave so much rain and chilly weather, but you didn't let that hold you up. Enjoyed having you, bring the kids back as they get older and want to revisit DC, return guests get a discount!

First VRBO Experience

  • 5 of 5

Self proclaimed 'county folk' going to visit our son in the big city, we were hesitant to try a VRBO. Everything about our experience was positive. We especially enjoyed the location (nice neighborhood and close to the train). Paddy made us feel right at home and provided us with key essentials: recommendations on where to eat, etc. as well as train passes we could use. It was much nicer to come home to every night, instead of a hotel. We are definitely going to recommend to family & friends visiting the DC area.

A wonderful place to stay in the DC area

  • 5 of 5

This little rental was wonderful! We felt very much at home. Paddy has stocked it with everything you need. She even let us use the barbeque one night. The location is pleasant, neighborly, and easy walking distance to the train. Definitely the way to go if you are going to stay in the area but not wanting to stay at a hotel.

Wonderful DC get-away!

  • 4 of 5

We so enjoyed our stay at Camp Serendipity and Paddy is great! We have stayed at many accommodations thru VRBO so are able to compare to others. The apartment is clean and comfortable. The walk to the metro is as described. If new to the metro, it's easy to use - take a moment to pick out your quickest route to add more time to your sightseeing. One thing we've found helpful is to ask someone when entering a museum what is the "must see" item(s) - there's just so much to enjoy and explore. Don't hesitate on visiting Camp Serendipity. In Alexandria, we enjoyed Murphy's Irish Pub - music good; Yates Table Talk is a quick drive for breakfast (we went and ate one morning then came back and walked to the metro); and enjoyed Southside 815 for supper our last night. Recommend all.
