About Janice

I grew up in Delaware and now am living in Pennsylvania with my family and my dogs.

Janice purchased this house in 2011

Why Janice chose Hatteras Island

After vacationing on Hatteras Island for several years in my adult life, I took the plunge and purchased a property. The beaches are beautiful. The shells and sea glass you can find is unreal! Fantastic surf, wide-open space to spend your day. I specifically purchased a house on the sound because of the amazing sunsets over the water. Only makes sense to share the Hatteras Island experience through my home.

What makes this house unique

A lot of blood, sweat and tears went into making this simple home comfortable and modern. This home was built from the original timbers of the Creed's Hill Life Saving Station. It maintains its wonderful Island charm; original staircase and wainscoting, hardwood floors throughout, fantastic and desireable residential street. Located on the sound allows for beautiful sunsets, easy access to sound-side activities like kayaking or fishing. A quick drive to the beach--the 4x4 access beach which means no lugging anything over the dunes! The Hatteras-Ocracoke Ferry is also minutes away and makes a fantastic day trip. The house is within walking distance to the local grocery store, shops, restaurants and fishing charters.

Great Dog Friendly Rental!

  • 5 of 5

House was perfect for what we needed and in a quiet tucked-away street. Like others have said, once inside, the home really impresses. Kitchen was great for cooking dinner and breakfast!" Stayed in mid-September and the AC units kept the place cool if used as recommended. Great yard for our dog too!!

Nice and convenient

  • 5 of 5

The inside of the house was very nice and well kept. Overall the experience was great and Janice was fantastic to work with, especially last minute. I only have a couple of issues - I understand the reasoning for wanting to turn the AC units down during the day and when we were not at home, but it did become a bit of a pain trying to cool the house down when we got back. I know this may seem petty, but not having more than like 10 cable channels was a pain, especially in the evening. We were out during the day and would come back to the house to relax and hang out and we had an extremely limited number of tv channels to choose from.

Other than that, everything was fantastic. The house is adorable and I had a great experience using VRBO and renting from Janice!

VERY PLEASANTLY SURPRISED...You get your moneys worth here!!!

  • 5 of 5

I was somewhat afraid that there would be an unpleasant surprise at this property because there had been an issue with the septic tank once and so it hadn't been completely booked up late in the spring. From the outside, it does looks a little run-down, but I was VERY PLEASANTLY SURPRISED by what I found once inside. The owner had decorated the place in a very charming beach house style and had provided for many free-time activities. There was a great deal of space and plenty of sleeping options in the three bedrooms. Both the master (king) and 2nd bedroom (full) had amazing mattresses of superior quality (even better than at home ???) and there were 4 bunks in the third room !!! The large kitchen was well appointed with an excellent gas range and nice dish washer and the owner had tried to anticipate all cooking needs. There was a TV in the kitchen and also in the living room though with very few channels (cable), but there many DVDs and board games for kids. (Since I don't watch much TV, it wasn't a problem and, in fact, the kids used the WiFi to watch all their programs on tablet and also really enjoyed the board games and DVDs). Though there wasn't central air, the window units worked just fine and the house was quit cool enough in late June. The owner was easy to communicate with and told me that she had bought this property because she planned to use it as her own beach home. I think this shows in the details. While she doesn't live in Hatteras, a local handyman, who has been working for her as she renovates this beach home, came by to let me know that if there were any issues, he lived just down the road and would help (nice to know!).The back yard was spacious and fenced in....and dogs are welcome (with permission)!!!! My dog never tries to escape so I have no issues, but I couldn't see any place where he might have tried. The grass in the back was GREAT (I think the variety is called Havana grass, which is spongy to step on) and was well maintained. The only thing I could even try to complain about was that the grill was charcoal, but hey, we were at the beach, so why bother....it worked fine and we used it a few times!

This is a great home for an affordable family vacation on a tranquil part of Hatteras with easy access to beaches and stores. I would definite return!!! Thank you, Janice for a great vacation!!!

Cozy home close to beach

  • 5 of 5

My parents, sister, brother-in-law, and I stayed at this lovely little house for a week and we could not have had a better experience for this trip. It's a beautiful house and we felt right at home as soon as we stepped in the door. It was better than described and close to everything we wanted to do. The neighborhood was quiet, peaceful, and friendly.

The beach was a quick 2-3 minute drive away, and there were several nearby shops and galleries. The Hatteras Lighthouse is quite close, only about 20 minutes away, and there is also an excellent pizza place, Gingerbread House Bakery, around the same distance. The upstairs bedrooms have individual A/C units, so they cooled down quickly as long as you keep the doors shut, and downstairs was fairly cool with ceiling fans in the kitchen and a window unit in the living room. The kitchen was well-supplied with pots, pans, and dishes, as well as a super quiet dishwasher and a gas stove, which my dad was very sorry to leave behind.

We miss it already!

Pretty good rental

  • 4 of 5

We got to the island early and drove by the house before check in time to see where we were going and there was someone there (later identified as a contractor). The outside of the house does not look as nice as the inside- mostly because it's an older home being renovated. We came back a little later at our check in time and things inside looked very well kept and like the pictures. The living room was spacious (the rug was not vacuumed but otherwise clean). The kitchen was was clean and has just about anything you'd need. The first thing you notice when walking in is how terribly hot it gets without AC. It cooled off with the window units, eventually. Upstairs was unbearably hot but since it was only 2 of us we only used the master bedroom and only ever used that window unit so it cooled that room fairly quickly with the door shut. The problem is no fan/AC in the bathroom so if you're drying your hair and putting on makeup- forget it, you're going to get hot. The electrical outlet in the downstairs bathroom also did not work so I had to do my hair in the living room/entry way (no big deal for me). One day we came back for lunch and there was a man in the house which was unsettling because he didn't tell us who he was when we entered. As he left he simply said, "you're not the first renters to see me." I emailed the owner and she let us know it was the contractor and he should have let her know he was coming. Later the same day he was there again in the garage- it was just weird to have someone you don't know at the property you're renting. If something went wrong while we were renting, no one would really be able to say if it was us or him and that I didn't care for. One day we came in to ants and we cleared that up easily. There were no other bugs in the house like someone said- there are a lot of mosquitos are outside naturally. The master bedroom mattress was very comfortable- we slept great. The biggest complaint I had was the shower being dirty- there was hair on the shower rim before we ever took a shower so it was not from us. I'm sure that the owner will continue to make improvements- she's very helpful when booking/ answering questions.
