Overview

About the property

Large Family Cottage, 3 BR, 2 BA, Sleeps 6

This quaint and spacious 2-story cottage is ideally situated on Lake Michigan overlooking the Straits of Mackinac and the Mackinac Bridge. Owned for 5 generations by the same family, it has been lovingly maintained and reflects the history of the Mackinac area. This 19th century lakeside cottage still offers the quiet and peaceful cottage living of another era but is fully updated to meet the needs of today's traveler. The cottage is located on the water in a peaceful Northern Michigan lakeside neighborhood, just outside of the quaint Village of Mackinaw City. You can walk to town for your evening ice cream cone; walk to Shepler's Ferry to catch a ride to the beautiful Mackinac Island or just sit waterside with a good book. This vintage cottage will take you and your family back to a simpler time with your days spent at the beach and your evenings around a campfire. Mackinaw City is a perfect location to serve as a base camp for all Northern Michigan has to offer. Swim, bike, hike, golf, parasail, hunt or fish - all within minutes. If you like to shop, there's plenty of that. There are lots of specialty shops in Mackinaw City and a day trip from Mackinaw City to Petoskey on US 31 will offer abundant opportunities for antiquing.

The cottage is clean, comfortable and very charming. It has 3 bedrooms, 2 full baths and a front and back porch. The kitchen is open to the dining room and has a full size refrigerator, stove, dishwasher and microwave. All dishes, pots & pans are included. The dining room comfortably seats 6 people. There is also a laundry room with a washer/dryer. The Living Room opens to the back deck and features a grand stone fireplace, rocking chairs and a comfy sofa for relaxing. This is a place you will want to come back to year after year. This is a historic cottage containing some antiques which may not be suitable for small children.

What makes this cottage unique

Our cottage was originally built in 1896 and was the first structure on this beach. The original owner/builder was a larger than life character who is reputed to have made some money in the Alaska Gold Rush and inherited the beach from his father. He settled on this small point of land (Harding Point) to build what was essentially a one-room shack (what is now the kitchen). It was added on to over the years numerous times to become the 2-story structure that it is today.

He then built the cottage next door and began to parcel off the land and build cottages for the new owners according to their desires. Many of the cottages along the beach that he built can still be seen today.

My daughter is the fifth generation to own the cottage and he was her Great, Great, Great Uncle! Both she and I have been going to the cottage since we were babies. We are very attached to it, to say the least.

The cottage is two stories and has 3 bedrooms. The master bedroom has spectacular views of the straits and the bridge. We have 2 porches, front and back. The porch on the lake side is being restored to look like the original porch, but is currently a deck.

Our beachfront is large, but is not sandy or particularly good for swimming. It is a nice place to sit, however, and enjoy the views and watch the passing boats and freighters. You can also build a fire in the pit and toast marshmallows - one of our favorite activities. Nearby Trails Bed Beach is a nice sandy beach for swimming and playing in the water as is Wilderness State Park.

The cottage itself is full of family memorabilia and antiques from the time that my grandmother lived there. It definitely has that old 'cottage' feel to it.

Over the fire place is the remains of the sign from the old Wawatum Inn that burned down. It used to be behind where the Catholic Church now sits.

Place was ok, location was great.

  • 3 of 5

Upon arrival there was literally hundreds of dead ants, there was not a vacuum available so we went through out the cabin trying to broom all the ants up, coffee pot was so bad we had to go buy vinegar and clean the pot. I don't think the area rugs are ever picked up and shook out let alone vacuumed. We picked up the rugs that we could and shook them out.

We did like the place and location but it could be a tad cleaner.

We did leave the place cleaner than we found it though.

Really Nice

  • 4 of 5

Like going back in time with new amenities. The view was the absolute best and the peaceful location was great. The only thing we missed was absolutely no TV connection, not even local news, we don't require a lot of TV but just bit would have been nice. Would definitely return...

Great old cottage with lots of charm and great view

  • 5 of 5

Liked being close into Mackinaw City. Everything in working order, , clean and comfortable. Description of property isaccurate. Did site seeing in the area - highlights were the Dark Sky Park and Teqhuanamin Falls. Very good restaurants in the area we enjoyed including; City Park in Petosky, Legs Inn, and Douglas Lake Steakhouse. The Key Hole in Town is always good for a beer and Sandwich. Would stay here again and recommend to others.

Great cottage, great location!!

  • 4 of 5

My family and I recently stayed at this quaint cottage. While having the feel of an antique, little cottage, it had all the modern amenities that we needed. The cottage was very clean and well kept. We loved the view when we sat down along the water each morning and evening. My husband loved sitting out on the porch each morning drinking his coffee and watching the barges go by. The only thing that would have made it better was if some of the shrubbery were cut back to provide for better views from the porch. The beach area also has some tree sprouts popping up which, if removed, would provide for a nicer beach area. Overall we loved it and hope to return again one day!
