(Please scroll down on this page to see larger photos and 3 more guestbook reviews.)

This sweet home has one queen bedroom and an extra queen bedroom (if needed), one full bath, a small office, new kitchen, and an open living room and dining area featuring a handcrafted mango wood dining table and vintage Hawaiian rattan furniture.

A large lot surrounded by a wooded lot and a pasture with grazing cows and horses, affords privacy and a rural flavor to your stay.

An outside dining table with umbrella and cushioned lounge chairs with pocket ocean views are some of the relaxing features for you to enjoy. A gas grill, beach chairs and umbrella, coolers, and water sports gear are included for fun in the sun!

Peek-a-boo views of the ocean, Maui, and Haleakala can be seen from the house and property.

Hale 'Ukulele is off the highway on a private drive, walking distance to an ATM machine, post office, grocery store, and library and a short drive to restaurants, shops, beaches and a great community swimming pool and community center.

Not too big for one couple and plenty of room for two couples and can accommodate a family of three.

You will want to stay longer to enjoy this unique Kohala cottage. Rural, local, FUN!

About Carol Geertsema

We live part-time in eastern Washington state and part-time here in North Kohala. We have been coming to Hawaii and Kohala since the early 1980's. After retiring, selling our house in Seattle, and moving to our cabin in the mountains, we traveled the world to find a second home in a unique place with an interesting and vibrant community, warm weather, and ocean beaches. This was that place!

We kept coming back to Kohala and finally found our Hawaiian retreat between Hawi Town and Kapa'au Town. We love to swim, snorkel, hike, bike, run, walk, play music, go to the library, eat out, shop the farmer's market and meet new friends. All of these things we can do right here and most of them not even having to get into the car! Kohala is the place for us and we hope you will enjoy our little piece of paradise and find your own adventures and fun.

Carol Geertsema purchased this cottage in 2011

Why Carol Geertsema chose Kapaau

Hale 'Ukulele is named for our love of playing the 'ukulele and from the inspiration of Old Hawaii seen in the Dietrich Varez prints we have purchased over the years and display throughout our home.

We like being in town with good neighbors and lots of privacy. After clearing out the overgrown wooded lot behind the house, we now enjoy watching nature in our own backyard. Lots of birds!

And if the weather is not so great we just take a short ride down the road to Mahukona or Mauna Kea Resort for a swim or go snorkeling and chill on the beach at 69 or Hapuna. How can you beat that?

What makes this cottage unique

People are just happier in Hawaii! The local food and fish are fresh, the air and water are clean, and we live in a rural, ethnically mixed, artsy community.

You can cook at home (in our new kitchen) or have ono grindz out. You can lounge around the house and yard or head out for close-in adventures or walk to a Monday night concert or film at the library. It's all just so much fun!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We spent an idyllic week at this warm and welcoming gem in Kapa’au. The house is a completely remodeled 2BR /1BA Hawaiiana cottage on a large, private lot close to the center of town. The Hale had all of the practical and thoughtful amenities we needed to cook meals, enjoy the beaches, and relax in the backyard with a cup of coffee or a cocktail. The beds were very comfortable and we enjoyed reading the local guidebooks. Hale Ukelele is a scenic short drive to some of the most beautiful beaches on the island. The towns of Hawi and Kapa’au both offer impressive art galleries, along with some fantastic restaurants. We very much enjoyed this respite from the congestion and traffic of Kona. Thanks so much to the owners and remodelers Chris and Carol for the wonderful work they did to make our stay so memorable.

Great home and location!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay that was all too short. We only could stay a couple of weeks. The home is wonderful and the yard has fresh oranges. The kitchen was the nicest stocked place we have had in our 23 years of VRBO. The yard was great and has a large specimen of a ponytail palm - nicer than most botanical gardens. Mahalo for sharing your home.

Convenient Location to Hawi and Kohala

  • 4 of 5

Property well described. Conveniently located to Hawi and Kohala. Well provisioned with stated amenities. Owner was responsive to messages.

We enjoyed our stay while attending the Kohala Ukulele Workshop Retreat. Eat at the Kohala Hub Grill and take in the farmers market on Saturday morning if you can.

North Kohala Gem

  • 5 of 5

We rented this house not knowing how close it was to family. It was the best place ever! Relaxing and equipped with everything you need. Post office, credit union, gas, and stores are all walking distance. Driving to the beach, sightseeing, and going to restaurants were not too far, but came home to a great house. Hale Ukulele...until we meet again. Mahalo!!

Great place to stay in North Kohala

  • 5 of 5

This was a great place to stay in North Kohala. The house was easy to find and everything was as advertised. You can walk or take a short drive to many good restaurants in Kapa'au and Havi. Or if you want cook at home they have all the kitchen equipment to make a gourmet meal. Lots of privacy. Can highly recommend.

North Kohala is a beautiful, laid-back district with much local color and history. Kamehameha I was born here and spirited away to be raised in a valley beyond Pololu at the 'end of the road' (although some people say we are at the 'beginning of the road'!) His statue resides in downtown Kapa'au and the Kamehameha Day celebration in June is a highlight event in Kohala. We have a wonderful Farmer's Market in Hawi Town on Saturdays, excellent restaurants, a free swimming pool, zipline course, cafes, and shops. There are also hiking trails and back roads to explore Old Hawaii up close.
