Overview

About the property

3 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, Sleeps 6, Downtown Location - Near ski areas (Windham)

Our house is a fully renovated, brick, Italianate freestanding building, in the center of the historic downtown, on one of the best residential streets in Hudson, one block south of Warren, the main shopping street. Everything, including the train station, is in a few minutes walking distance. There is no need for a car.

The house is wonderful in the fall and winter – many things to do in the area and two major ski areas – Windham and Catamount – are less than an hour away. There are a number of parks that offer winter activities – snow shoeing, cross country skiing, and ice skating, and many cultural attractions are open throughout the winter. Our house has a state of the art heating system, so it will be warm and cozy on the coldest of days. After a day of skiing, you can soak in our oversized claw footed top and curl up with our blankets and throws. Or you can wander nearby and sit by a fire at the world famous Fish and Game Restaurant.

A highlight in Hudson is Winter Walk on Warren Street, just a block away – a free event on the First Saturday of December from 5 – 8, with carolers in Victorian costumes, musical ensembles and dancers performing in the stores, with abundant refreshments and gift opportunities.

The house is on a corner so light floods the elegant high ceilinged rooms through the multiple tall windows and two bay windows. There is a double parlor with original sliding pocket doors and a separate study with a large flat screen TV and pullout sofa. There is cable service and wifi. There is a full bath with tiled shower on the first floor. The renovated eat in kitchen is fully furnished and has two big windows and a door onto the back porch leading to the private shady landscaped garden.

The grand stair hall leads to the second floor with its three good sized bedrooms and huge full bath with an oversized clawfoot tub as well as a large tiled shower.

Two of the bedrooms have queen sized beds and one is full sized. These rooms also have tall ceilings and large windows. They are cheerful and bright.

The house is fully air conditioned and heated and has an alarm system. It is probably best suited for adults or families with older children.

About Sara Johns Griffen

My sister and I own the house. We raised our families and worked nearby, and have always loved Hudson. We think this is one of the most beautiful houses in Hudson and we are thrilled to have had the opportunity to buy it and make it available to people wanting to experience the beauty and excitement of this special little riverside city.

One of us is an architect, specializing in historic preservation and restoration, and the other is the president of The Olana Partnership. We discovered Columbia County 27 years ago, having grown up in NYC, and have lived here ever since.

The Hudson Valley is one of the most beautiful places in the world and its proximity to NYC makes it a favorite spot for weekends away. The train ride along the river is worth the trip by itself!

Why Sara Johns Griffen chose Hudson

Our house is one of a kind and in beautiful condition. It is both comfortable and elegant. The proportions of the rooms are perfect. The natural light is superlative. The location is perfect for experiencing the city of Hudson and all its charms.

What makes this house unique

So many of the original architectural details were intact, including the bracketed archways at each bay window. The polished wood floors. The charming garden and private back porch in the middle of an urban environment. The great restaurants and shops you can walk to. Lively street scene. New York Magazine wrote a great article about Hudson as a perfect weekend getaway: http://nymag.com/travel/weekends/hudsonnew/

Notes:
We are starting an exciting exclusive catering arrangement with the popular new restaurant whose garden backs up to ours, Fish and Game, Hudson. The celebrity chef, Zak Pelaccio, is offering to deliver special breakfasts and late afternoon drinks and hors d'oeuvres to our house, to be ready for you when you get there, so you can just relax and settle in. They have also offered to make special arrangements for dinner reservations at the restaurant for guests at our house. The restaurant has a unique email for our guests to use to arrange the particulars and payment with them directly. The email is sarah@fishandgamehudson.com. Be sure to tell them you will be guests at The Artist's House for this very special service.

Very Highly Recommended

  • 5 of 5

The Artist’s House has been renovated and decorated to perfection, yet remains an exceptionally warm and inviting home with a true sense of place and history. The location could not be better (central Hudson in easy walking distance to Warren Street, restaurants, and the most popular venues for weddings and special events), and the owner is exceptionally responsive and easy to work with. Multiple friends and family members rented properties in Hudson over the weekend of Oct. 20 for a multi-day wedding celebration. The Artist’s House was unanimously considered the most lovely and well maintained of the properties that we rented. Very highly recommended.

Owner's Response: Guests like these confirm my and my sister's joy in offering our home to our guests. It was a wonderful connection from the beginning -- a clear interest in a historic home, easy backs and forths on conversations, and after they had left, the report that the house was left in perfect condition. Thank you for your review, and please come back any time!

Great House & Great Location

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Artist House from 3/31/17-4/2/17 and our experience at the Artist's House was amazing, even the rainy weather didn't dampen the weekend.

I would recommend this special home to anyone looking to get away for a quick weekend or

an extended stay. The town had great shops and better restaurants. Make sure to enjoy all the wonderful art in the home, it's a gallery in itself. The owners were extremely attentive and helpful. You will not regret staying here. Enjoy!

We love the Artist's House! Just finished 2nd stay there!

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely love the Artist's House. It is beautifully, comfortably, decorated. The beds are SO comfortable. The kitchen is well appointed. And the location couldn't be better (neighbors Fish & Game and steps from Warren Street). The little rear courtyard is perfect for kiddos to play in. We love this place!

Beautiful home

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at the Artist's house over new years and couldnt be happier with our selection. The home is spacious, beautifully decorated, and situated in a prime location: a block away from the main street where all the shopping and restaurants are. The host was wonderful to deal with and made sure our stay was perfect from the start. We'll definitely be back!

The house is lovely and perfectly located within Hudson to access everything (right next door to Fish and Game). Sarah and her sister were very helpful getting us in and settled and answering questions as they came up over the weekend. Highly recommended.

Hudson is an historic american city founded on the whaling industry after the revolution. It has maintained its historic architecture and charm to a large degree. It has experienced a renaissance in the last 20 years and is now a world reknowned antiques center as well as home to multiplying numbers of chic shops and restaurants, including the brand new restaurant, fish and game, by famed restaurateur, zak pelaccio, of fatty crab and fatty cue in nyc, whose garden backs up to our garden.

The main street, warren, is one block over. The world headquarters for face stockholm is located there, as well as numerous art galleries, such as the carrie haddad gallery and the john davis gallery. Many interesting and unusual shops, bars, restaurants and coffee houses line the streets. Le gamin country is a great french bistro relocated from nyc, le perche is a new french bakery and restaurant, with a brick baking oven imported from france. The best pizza and salads ever are to be had at informal baba louie's. Swoon kitchen bar, ca' mia, the crimson sparrow are all very elegant, some with outdoor dining. Club helsinki is a cool venue for music and performances as well as being a bar and restaurant.

Of course, if you have a car, or want to rent one once you get here, from enterprise rent-a-car, hudson is a perfect location for exploring the great historic house museums of the hudson valley, such as marvelous olana, home of hudson river school painter frederick church, the thomas cole house, lindenwald, home of president martin van buren, clermont and montgomery place. All with in about 15 minutes of hudson. A little farther afield, there is the beautiful countryside and farmland of the berkshires and northern columbia county.
