Overview

About the property

Tropical Gardens, Pool, & Hot Tub, Make This The Perfect Island Getaway!

Recently designated one of VRBO's most inviting listings, our Island Getaway is nestled within a stand of lush tropical plants. This unique cottage offers a delightful indoor/outdoor living experience – 3 of the 4 walls are screened (the other is solid), opening the studio to the sensual tropical air that is such a wonderful part of Hawai'ian living.

Outside, a covered lana'i and outdoor shower (great after a trip to nearby beaches), are bordered by a bamboo grove and banana trees. A pool and hot tub are all steps away – as are mangoes, bananas, avocados and papayas.

Inside is furnished with rattan furniture, a dreamy queen-sized bed, and plenty of space for relaxing. The kitchen is compact and complete – featuring a dishwasher, microwave, 4-burner gas cook top, convection/toaster oven (but no 'full-size' oven), and 20x20x36 refrigerator with upper, separate 16x16x20 freezer. Custom-built bamboo cabinetry ties everything together in unmistakable island style.

We loved designing, building and living in our little cottage. It gives us great pleasure to share this love with like-minded guests who are seeking something more authentic than your typical 'condo experience'.

Please be aware that Hawai'i is probably more 'rural' than you are used to. There are places on the Island that have no cell phone reception (although it is quite good at our cottage), and Internet connectivity is only 'adequate' (and sometimes awkward). We subscribe to a cable Internet service, and reset the cable router frequently. There is WiFi at the property, but you will most likely need to restart your device/equipment.

And because this information is deeply buried in the VRBO 'extras', but is one of the most frequently asked questions:

The pool is shared with one other vacation rental studio. This 14 by 14 pool is unfenced, and there is no lifeguard present. Pool is about 10 feet deep. It is professionally serviced once a week.

The hot tub next to the pool is rarely used by anyone other than our Island Getaway guests. This is because the other Tropical Hideaway vacation rental guests have their own, private, hot tub. Although it is not prohibited that they use the hot tub by the pool, it is uncommon for this to happen.

About Hope & Rennie Innis

We are freshly retired and love the idea of having this wonderful island getaway to share with people.

Rennie was a software developer, and Hope was a property manager.

We love to travel, especially when warm water is involved! Although we have traveled many places, this is our favorite place to enjoy rest and relaxation.

Hope & Rennie Innis purchased this cottage in 2004

Why Hope & Rennie Innis chose Captain Cook

The first time we arrived here, we thought this was the perfect place to spend our island vacation. Being so close to great snorkeling, beaches and close enough to Kona for a night out, we loved this getaway cottage so much that we returned a year later to purchase it.

What makes this cottage unique

Being in a beautiful tropical garden, with the pool, hot tub and gorgeous view of the ocean and mountain volcano, this place is sublime.

The Real Hawaii

  • 5 of 5

We loved our holiday at the Island Getaway, and felt like we experienced a bit of the real Hawaii there. The cottage is island-charming, comfortable, extraordinarily well-equipped, and surrounded by a lush jungle-y landscape. As there is no window glass, one communes closely with the sights and sounds of nature (I found it incredibly soothing). We loved the outside facilities which felt exotic, unique and lovely. The ripe mangoes we retrieved off the ground each morning were indescribably delicious. Can't wait to return!

Quaint Hawaiian Getaway. The name says it all

  • 4 of 5

The chirping birds at night required earplugs but otherwise had great sleeps. You will see insects such as spiders and geckos around. It’s part of the experience. We really enjoyed the pool every morning of our 6 night stay. I would recommend if you want the feel of being part of nature.

Awesome hideaway!

  • 5 of 5

We LOVED our stay at the Island Getaway! We almost don't want to "advertise" this lest it become too popular. If you want to to truly stay away from the hub bub, touristy (not our cup of tea), resort/condo part of Kona, and experience the island in a quiet way this is it! It's a lovely, well kept jungalow and property! We booked this as an "adventure" for us. It is truly almost open air, so we experienced all that goes with this. The lush tropical foliage is beautiful and offers privacy where you need it. We were hesitant about the outdoor bathroom/shower on the lanai but it felt natural once we were there. The caretaker who met us is very friendly and knowledgeable, offering us "local" experience tips during our stay. We enjoyed beaches (one almost deserted) while we there and then would come back and truly relax. Property has all the amenities one would need, wifi being the one "modern" convenience we did use. Although it shares a property with another owner, we never saw another person and were able to enjoy the pool in privacy. If we get opportunity to visit the big island again, we would choose to stay here.

Wonderful tropical retreat

  • 5 of 5

Island Getaway is beautiful, comfortable, and just as unique as you might expect. Being immersed in the natural world makes an authentic tropical experience, with screens rather than walls, and toilet and shower open to the "jungle". The sound of koke frogs and birds is a never-ending soundtrack. Pool and hot tub overlooking the seascape and moonlit skies. We found it very well equipped, from kitchen to bath, washer and dryer, and beach toys too. Comfortable furniture and bed, WiFi, smart TV and many extras supplied.. It all worked for us, and Erin was a delightful and helpful host. Comprehensive written materials at the cottage made it easy to explore the big island. Thank you, Rennie and Hope, for creating such a wonderful place to enjoy the Kona side of the big island. We would love to return.

Compact but quaint

  • 4 of 5

This is basically 1 room with an out-door (covered) lanai. The lanai includes a sink, outdoor shower, washer/dryer and bathroom. It is roomy enough for 2. It has all the comforts of home. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 is totally my preference. There are quite a few webs and spiders around the outside. They supply you with several tools to remove them and that's a good thing. I just am terrified of spiders. However, I would go back in a heartbeat. There is also an outdoor pool and hot tub which is also very nice.

This unique cottage is located on the south Kona coast, just minutes from the best snorkeling in the Hawai'ian islands.

You will also be in the famed Kona coffee region, where some of the best coffee in world is grown. You can sample this coffee, or take an informative tour, at nearby roasters.

Not to be missed is the Volcano's National Park, 1 1/2 hours drive from this location. Watch the earth being formed before your eyes when you visit the Kilauea crater.

One of the State of Hawai'i's two National Historic Parks is the 'City of Refuge', located 5 minutes, or 1.6 miles from the cottage. This historic and restored ruins will give you a sense of the island's fascinating history, and is adjacent to enticing 'Two Step' snorkeling. There is also a nice white sand beach about 15 minutes south of our cottage!

An amazing Fruit Stand is just a bit further south and has fruits that you will have never even heard of!

Painted Church is a well-known attraction. It is a 10 minute walk from the cottage, and is a simple wooden structure whose hand-painted interior decor was meant to replicate the glory of the cathedrals. Catholic services are held and are posted. You will be welcome.
