About Kathleen Roche OWNER
My husband and previously live in New York City, and our New Hampshire "cabin" was where we went to get away from it all. Owl's Rest is the perfect home for play and relaxation.. Our daughter was 10 when we realized we needed a place to rest and enjoy our love of antiquing, hiking, cycling, barbeque, swimming, kayaking, horseback riding and viewing foliage. My husband is from Napa and missed the beauty of the area. When we drove to the nearby town of Peterborough, we were hooked. This town has live theatre, the Peterborough Players and the actors circle as well as McDowell circle, the oldest artist retreat performed since 1933 having actors as James Whitmore and Sam Huntington. The Peterborough Historical Society lets you discover your past. The town was a model for the play OUR TOWN written by Thornton Wilder. The towns of Rindge and Jaffrey, Peterborough, Sharon, and Dublin all have incredible antique shops, a white-steepled church in Peterborough fronts the town green and the amazing oldest public library in the country. The Monadnock music festival offers music every July and August and the incredible Sharon Arts gallery (beats shopping for art and jewelry in NYC) is my favorite. My husband loves to cycle. There are 20 lakes in the area, 5 golfing ranges and is a perfect year around recreational playground. Peterborough has the best small hospital and is 15 minutes away by car. Everyone's definition of a pretty town can differ, but we look for a sense of time passed by, a preservation of the past, and a very real present. The nearby towns of Hancock and Harrisville are ranked in the top ten in Yankee magazine for New England's prettiest towns.
Kathleen Roche OWNER purchased this House in 1998
Why Kathleen Roche OWNER chose Rindge
We first visited this property when our daughter Rachel's friend Rose invited us up for the summer. We were instantly hooked. We bicycled all over the area. The towns that are so very near is what sold us as well as our beautiful wrap around porch, house and neighbors. Harrisville, New Hampshire, a 16 mile bike ride from Rindge on Route 137 is perhaps my favorite of all. Here tidy brick buildings and a large granite mill are strung along the millstream that once powered a woolen mill. The buildings are fully restored, and there is the internationally known Harrisville Designs, makers of looms and yarns for handweavers and knitters. If you turn right at Harrisville Designs and cross the bridge, you’ll find a group of five millworkers’ houses called “Peanut Row.” Beyond these is Sunset Beach, the town’s private little beach and a nice spot for a picnic. Harrisville is the village most painted by artists (even more than Hancock) and is one of the oldest existing textile communities in the country, a National Historic Landmark village.I can go on about the area but you have to experience it to love it

Perfect lake house!
Our family just completed a three week stay at this perfect NH lake house! The pictures online do not do it justice - it's so much better! The house was clean and so comfortable, stocked with everything you would need. You can tell the owner's take great pride in this home and try to give their guests a uniquely "NH" experience. The owners also couldn't have been more accommodating and easy to work with. The lake is just minutes away although if you look hard, you can see it through the trees. We spent most nights on the big wrap around porch listening to the fireworks on the lake and the sounds of the trees. You will enjoy every minute in this house!
Thank you For taking such wonderful care of our home.
We love our house and it certainly brings us joy when our guests love it too!
Great house for a week/weekend getaway!
Classic New England house with top-notch amenities including spacious yard and short walk to lake beach. Serene environment and only 1.5 hours from Boston. Great owners to interact with as well!
Comfy spacious house a short walk from a private beach on a lake
The house is lovely, well equipped (washer dryer and dishwasher, full kitchen) and spacious. And quiet!! It's in a small "neighborhood " a few minute walk from the lake where we could either canoe or kayak. And swim of course . The owners were very available and responsive to any questions . Highly recommend this house !
I'm so happy you loved our house as much as we do!
You were wonderful guests

The perfect retreat
The experience of being here cannot be expressed in photos. From the beautiful vantage point of the generous wrap-around porch, to the cozy private deck off the master bedroom with the comfy chair, to the perfectly proportioned screened-in eating space, it was a wonderful place to relax, play and share precious time with those you love. It accommodated our family of a couple, a 2 year old and a grandmother, with room to spare for friends and other family members to stay for a couple days. I loved the 5 minute walk to the beach, which made that a special destination. It was hard to decide where to have the morning coffee -- in the upstairs porch, the downstairs porch, or the beach. Dinners with soft candlelight on the screened-in porch were a fabulous ending to days that offered a range of activities for all ages (kayak rides around the pristine lake were my favorite). Neighbors are friendly, and the owners are very helpful and available for any questions during the stay via email or phone. This is clearly a special home for them, and they have generously made available many unique items that are beyond the normal vacation rental. It is a place for creating lifelong memories, and I guarantee you will want to return.
Everything I expected and more
The house and property was perfect for our stay. What you see in the pictures is what you get when you show up. We were having a family reunion/ our sons wedding reception in the area. We had 3 homes in the area, but everyone came to our house and beach. One night we served 22 people and everything was prepared/cooked and served in this home. The front porch was amazing at all times of the day, quiet morning by yourself or in the evenings with a large crowd. Another aspect that worked for us was the porch, living room, dinning room and kitchen were perfect for the 22 people to be able to break up into smaller groups as the conversations drifted from one topic to the next.
The beach was a wonderful place to hang out especially when the temp rose into the 90's last week, everyone was swimming or sitting in the shade. Kathy answered the very few questions we had on the wifi (I missed her note in the middle of the table actually giving me the info lol)
In summary, we could not have been more pleased.
Classic lake cottage, very comfy and relaxed. Tons of space on the shady lawn for kids and dogs to run and play. Good beds, good kitchen, many leisurely family meals shared on the screened porch. We ate lobster rolls and ice cream cones at Kimball Farm, watched fireworks around the lake at the association beach, climbed Mt. Monadnock, shopped downtown Peterborough and enjoyed much happy, relaxed family time. The cottage was VERY clean and well maintained. The owner accomodated us a day early with short notice. I will stay here again when in the area.
If your passion is antiquing, 3 minute walk to sandy beach and a 3 minute car ride to the public beach for picnicking and swimming, great restaurants, picture perfect New England towns (Peterborough), live theatre with Peterborough Players, hiking Mt Monadnock , cycling, triathalons, cook outs, bonfires at the beach, beautiful foliage, grilling or playing pingpong on the porch or just relaxing on our wrap around porch, this is the place. Great restaurants in Peterborough, 12 Pines/Jaffrey, NH - KIMBALL FARM FOR ICE CREAM AND A RESTAURANT IS THE BEST
