Located just a brief walk from the upper WNMU campus, performing arts center and Mimbres Museum, Casa Serena is an enchanting, classic 1940's adobe perched on the edge of town overlooking the Gila high country and surrounded by native Juniper, Oak and Pinon Pine.

If you are looking for the charm and warmth of a southwestern New Mexico adobe experience, Casa Serena can take you there...and back to a simpler time. With its hand peeled Viga ceiling beams in every room,thick adobe walls and cozy Kiva fireplace...it doesn't get much more authentically 'Southwest' than this. Our two bedroom, one bath 'edge of town' retreat is surrounded with native planting, provided with plenty of off-street parking...dine and relax outdoors in the sun or shade... in the south or east patio or enjoy the great views from the front porch. Enjoy a soak or shower in our graciously remodeled bathroom with its extra long and deep tub. With hardwood floors in the living room and bedrooms you'll be surrounded by natural building materials (that are also easy on the feet). Take advantage of our location to nearby Historic Downtown Silver City and bike or walk to great restaurants, galleries and shops.

Casa Serena is provided with the following amenities:

TWO BEDROOMS...master is provided with a comfortable double bed. A twin is provided in the second bedroom/office

SOFA BED... is provided in the living room for visitors of our long term quests

BATHROOM...has a great tub for relaxing soaks or showers after a jog through the local trails

KITCHEN...A generous galley style kitchen comes complete with cookware, dishes, coffee maker, micro wave, ceramic top range with oven and high efficiency clothes washer/dryer as well as even higher efficiency clothes dryer (outside clothes line complete with clothes pins).

About Tatiana Kurakin and Jim Druffel

We are native Californians smitten by Southern New Mexico, its own timeless beauty, history and magic... also its uncanny similarity to parts of California 'Gold Country' and other great places we have lived or visited. We left California after selling our interest in 'TEKA-ILLUMINATION', an outdoor lighting manufacturing company in Templeton near San Luis Obispo. We can be found at TATIANA MARIA GALLERY during the day at our 1884 historic building in the Historic District of downtown Silver City. Tatiana started this business from a porch sale in Rosendale, NY then known as 'MIDTOWN ANTIQUES'

Why Tatiana Kurakin and Jim Druffel chose New Mexico

We acquired the property next to Casa Serena in 1997 while still living and working in California. After an extensive renovation of 1412 Mississippi (Casa Encantada) and having always been intrigued by the gracious little adobe next door we finally purchased it in 2000. It had always seemed like a 'companion' home and we later discovered that the properties had been built roughly at the same time from 'on-site' clay and were both built by a WNMU university professor. A quick walk around and through Casa Serena will explain without words how the land of enchantment enchants.

What makes this house unique

Before us, Casa Serena was the home of the dean of women at WNMU...namesake of the university tennis courts that are dedicated to her. We have pictures of her and her friends around the dinner table having a great time...her landscaping efforts won the Silver City garden club 'best of show' in 1972. There is a unique spirit about Casa Serena that is better felt than explained, it is part of our quiet neighborhood, great neighbors and proximity to everything we enjoy.

Perfect getaway!

My husband and I stayed in this house mid-October and the weather couldn't have been any better! The house itself is just as advertised, no surprises at all. It was very comfortable for the 2 of us...cozy, but enough room to relax. The bed was very comfortable with nice pillows and linens, made for a few nights of great sleep! The bathroom was large with a nice soaking tub and a great shower. The kitchen had everything we needed, I really appreciated the French Press for coffee! We enjoyed the outdoor space to sit in the evening and have a cocktail as we talked about our daily adventures. Our only regret is that we didn't plan to stay longer, so much to explore in the area! I highly recommend this property and Jim and Tatiana were very pleasant and easy to work with!! Thanks for the great stay!!

Top-Notch in Every Way

I really cannot say enough nice things about this house and the owners. Both far exceeded our expectations. The house is close enough to the university to walk, a plus for my husband who took a seminar there. The views from the house are exceptional, which was perfect for me because I am a painter. Also, the house faces north and has that magical north light that painters lover. The house is well-equipped and beautifully decorated. I was comfortable the moment I walked in. We had everything we needed in the kitchen and more. We were concerned about heat because we stayed during the hot, humid season but the adobe of the house really does keep it cool and comfortable. We only used the air conditioning once and the fan a few times. Useful details on how things work in the house are available in a folder but the owners are easily reached by telephone for any questions. We felt at home, and had privacy and quiet. I loved the CD player.

Three things that would be appreciated: 1) A bar in the bathroom for we baby boomers who need a little help stepping out the tub. 2) A fold-up luggage rack for suitcases, 3) A quicker refund of the damage deposits, which we didn't receive until 12 days after departure. If this is VRBO's policy maybe it should be looked at.

Our stay was one of the most relaxing vacations I've ever had. Thank you Tatiana and Jim. We look forward to stayed in your beautiful adobe home again. You are the best!

Nice house. Roommates mtn bike was stolen from inside the house while we were away for a few days. Property owners became very stand-off-ish and unwilling do discuss the incident after being approached with the circumstance.

Owner's Response: Tatiana and I have owned homes and rental properties in New Mexico since 1997. We have long been advised that to enter a rented home for any purpose short of a "house on fire" is a legal taboo, and we only enter our rentals with guest approval for a specific purpose and specified time...such as repair or replacement of an appliance. The "smoke jumper" whose mountain bike was stolen out of our VRBO home while he was deployed, initially accused us of stealing his $10,000. mountain bike. After an upsetting late night discussion, we and our guest both filed police reports. Subsequently, our guest decided that we probably didn't steal his bike, but were responsible for the theft because we had entered the home and left the door unlocked. A day or so later he informed us that a friend had found a similar model bike for about $5,000. ... and if we wrote him a check for $5000. all would be well. We did not write him a check for $5000. When they first arrived, I noticed that they were in the habit of leaving the house-key on the front porch and had to step up on our bench to retrieve it. As close neighbors, we have a retired WNMU professor, a retired Magistrate judge and a Silver City police officer. Even though we consider our neighborhood exceptionally safe and gracious, with great neighbors, we now do not recommend to our guests that they leave a key outside or allow it to be used by others. We have had guests during the "Tour of the Gila" that left their bikes unlocked on the front porch or chained to the carport without incident. We also find it strange that no other items such as our TV and stereo were stolen during the bike theft. On a final note, we find it peculiar that almost a year later, with an upcoming fire season that we received this vindictive review.

Comfortable, Scenic

The house has 2 bedrooms, though I used just one, the master. It did not

have a TV, which was in the living room. Clean and quaint with good views

from the porch. Built of adobe, the cottage was cool for August, and has a good

circulation system. The reception for cell phone (AT&T) didn't work inside the house,

perhaps because of the thick walls. Reception was fine in the front yard, however.

Good kitchen, plenty of room, and very good location for proximity to town, collage,

and trails, with very friendly and accommodating owners.

Southern Comfort, New Mexico Style

It's fun to stay in a true adobe, but even more pleasurable when the hosts provide exceptional hospitality. This home featured a fully furnished kitchen with wine, coffee and cream ready to be enjoyed. Fresh flowers were nicely arranged in a large vase on the dining table. Every room was created with comfort in mind, and we were so happy to use the washer/dryer. The home was "turnkey" in every way. We saw shooting stars from the front porch and toasted our "happy hour' on the private back patio. There were many books and magazines highlighting local points of interest. The hosts Jim and Tatiana were very helpful in suggesting places to eat and showing us all the treasures in their downtown gallery. The house became our home. The renovated bathroom was perfect with a great shower/tub combo. The bed was very comfortable. All the nice touches throughout the house really made our stay one of the best in our travels through southern New Mexico. We have only a few suggestions which might have added to our pleasurable stay: 1) reading lights on both sides of the bed; 2) repair of the defective window seals in the common area for better viewing of the beautiful mountains. We would gladly return to this classic adobe home in Silver City to experience the thoughtful touches provided by the hosts.

At an elevation of 6000 ft.,the Silver City/Grant County area has pleasant, high desert summers with plenty of sunshine and refreshing 'monsoon' rains. Winters are mild with occasional snows that melt quickly with the strong sunlight and clear blue New Mexico skies. Being at the end of the continental divide high country, a trip North quickly gets you into the Spruce, Fir and Ponderosa pine high country...head South and you're in the rolling high desert grass-land and cattle country... complete with 'real deal' working cattle ranches.
