Why Laura Lee Verlinde chose Puako

Waikoloa Beach Resort is a pristine 5 star resort. We have cruised all the islands as a family and returned to the Big Island to buy our home as this island seems to have it all. Hali'i Kai is a little peace of heaven on Earth and the perfect getaway for our family.

What makes this condo unique

Upgraded kitchen, high end furnishings and close proximity to the Ocean Club which houses the pool, restaurant, bar and workout facility are just a few things that make this unit the perfect location. Views of the ocean allow whale watching without leaving the comfort of your home. Tucked further in from the property entrance allows for a more peaceful and relaxing stay. Personal little touches await each guest upon arrival.

Simply the best!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay here and we absolutely love it. Condo is clean and well stocked - coffee pot, french coffee press, electric kettle, etc. Appreciate the abundance of beach gear, beach towels and cooler. Also appreciate the lightly stocked pantry - we did not have to buy every single condiment we needed for our trip, which was much appreciated (especially when it's only used once!). Unit is clean and everything is in great working order. Love the laundry unit as I can pack light and do a load mid-week. One of the very few properties in our price range that has an actual ocean view from the lanai.

As for the larger resort area - the grounds are beautiful and immaculate. The pool area is the perfect place to watch the sunset. The bartender was excellent the week we were there - our drinks at the pool area were fantastic and better than any we had offsite. Food is pretty good too, and you can't beat being able to order food after a sunset swim without having to get in the car. Lots of families around, as it's a fairly kid-friendly place. Everyone seemed to follow quiet hours so things were peaceful at night. I would recommend staying here as a couple or a family.

The owner has a few recommendations on places to eat and we found a new favorite place to visit in Waimea - the Fish & the Hog. Excellent BBQ!

I reached out to the owners mid-trip with a question and they were quick to respond and easy to work with.

Thank you for sharing your Hawai'i home with us - we can't wait to return!

Beautiful Condo - Great Location

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! The condo itself is in great condition, clean, with comfortable beds and very well stocked kitchen. We also really enjoyed the comfortable outdoor space. The unit is also in a great location - a very short walk to the pool and bar/restaurant, with views of the ocean and crashing waves. We would definitely stay here again!

Disappointing Stay in an Otherwise a Beautiful Location

  • 1 of 5

This vacation rental is in a gated resort area situated along a golf course. The far end of the property (where the pool and restaurant are located) is on a rocky shoreline. The rental unit is on the ground level, with a short walk to the pool/restaurant. The westerly view of the lanai provides views of the sunset. The resort itself is lovely, and its grounds and are meticulously maintained.

However, this rental unit is dingy, dirty and inadequately maintained. The property owner needs to undertake a very thorough cleaning and updating of the unit before commanding such high-end rental prices.

This 2 bedroom/2bath apartment is long and skinny, décor is very “beige” and dated. The master bedroom carpet has nasty spots/stains; the living room couch is grimy and stained, and the cooktop fan is greasy and smelly. The master bathroom fan does not function – the shower stall is moldy and caked with soap scum; there is mold on the shower stall walls and the grout is stained/brown. The pillows on the lanai furniture were tattered and torn, with what looked like a blood spot on one cushion. There is more, but I believe you get the impression.

I considered this rental to be a huge disappointment, highly overpriced and generally just an insult. The only reason I awarded it any “points” at all was because of the resort area.

Also, the final rental amount ends up being much higher than expected, given the cleaning fee (!), service fee, taxes, damage deposit/insurance charges. To add insult, when you check in you are greeted with a daily “resort fee” (which, in my opinion, should be reflected in the property owner’s daily rental rates).

VRBO renters beware.

Owner's Response: Aloha Wanda, We received your review and take it very seriously. We are extremely disappointed to hear that our Hali'i Kai home did not meet your expectations. Having numerous returning guests, and only ever receiving five star ratings and one four star in the five years we have owned our place, we are very concerned about the one star rating you chose to give us. We understand that not everybody may like our choice in design which is why we include photos on our website to help you choose when booking your stay. In fact, we recently had our unit repainted in a neutral and calming color as is our taste. We are constantly making changes and upgrading our place, including deep cleaning of our carpets, tile floors and furniture. We have not raised our rates in four years and monitor closely the other rentals in the area to make sure we are competitive with units similar to ours. Prior to your booking, you would have received a quote which breaks down all fees related to our home and your stay. Taxes and service fees go to the State of HI and VRBO respectively. In our Rental Agreement, we clearly state the daily fee that Hali'i Kai charges, which goes directly to them, for use of the grounds. Most importantly, we were disappointed to hear that you never reached out to our Property Manager upon your arrival if you were not happy with the cleanliness and conditions of our place. As stated in the instructions you received prior to your visit, we provide contact information, directly connecting you to our property manager, encouraging our guests to notify her should you have any questions or concerns. She runs one of the top companies on the island and she should have been notified so she could address and correct your concerns. Finally, we are sorry that your stay in our home did not meet your expectations and wish you well. Mahalo, Laura Lee & Ray

wonderful 2BR condo near the ocean and clubhouse

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a week in late January and really enjoyed this condo. Highlights include the location, quiet resort community, beautiful sunsets and whale watching every night, terrific kitchen and lanai. The owners were also great and communicated promptly throughout the booking. We'd recommend this place without hesitations for anyone looking for a 2 BR condo on the coastal resort area of the Big Island.

For those who may stay here, the owners have placed a large number of guide books, 2 bicycles, a number of snorkel sets, etc. to make your trip easier. The kitchen has plenty of cookware and small appliances, and the nearby clubhouse has nice gas grills. There is a very nice pool and hot tub (with sand bottom!) at the clubhouse, where they serve pretty decent drinks and snacks or meals. The ocean views from the clubhouse or adjacent golf course are outstanding--especially at sunset each day. We were fortunate to be there during peak whale watching season and routinely got to see several fully breach. There are many top notch snorkeling spots all along the coast--don't be afraid to walk a little to get to the less-traveled ones. Groceries are available, though a little harder to source, but the fresh fruit and poke at the local market are very good, as expected. A car is definitely recommended if staying at any of these coastal communities--the rest of the island has so much to offer and is only a couple of hours away from this condo (little further to Volcanos Natl Park).

All in all, it was a great stay and the owners have clearly made a comfortable vacation home in an amazing part of the world that they are willing to share. If you're looking for a relaxing, well-appointed place in a great location and don't mind (or actually prefer) a little self catering, then I can't think of a better way to enjoy it.

Our family of 4 stayed for 4 nights.

We all agreed we would stay here again.

Everything was nice and well stocked.

My only suggestion; The living room couch needs cleaned or replaced.

Owner's Response: Aloha Shellylynne, Thank you for your kind words concerning your stay at our Hali'i Kai property. We loved having you as guests and value your input. Concerning the living room couch, we agree and are in the process of replacing our sofa but will be having it cleaned in the meantime. We hope to have you and your family back in the future should you ever make it over to the Big Island. Lastly, thank you again to your husband for his service to our country and your family for your sacrifice. Mahalo! Laura Lee
