About Ann K. Murray

Ann K. Murray lives just across the water from Edisto on Wadmalaw Island, but takes the hour and a half drive weekly to Edisto Beach to check on the house with one of her children, and to enjoy her time at the beach too! The house was purchased as a wedding present by her late husband, Capt. Dick Murray, and she and her family have many wonderful memories of their time spent there. She hopes you and your family will also enjoy and cherish your time spent in this quiet little corner of heaven.

Ann K. Murray purchased this house in 1977

Why Ann K. Murray chose Charleston Area

As Capt. Dick was always on and around the beach and local islands of the low country, he desired having a home on the beach for his family nearby. When Ravissant (French for so many wonderful adjectives like charming, enchanting, or homage to the French Huguenot ancestry in the Lowcountry) came available in the mid-1970's from a long term resident, he jumped on the opportunity for a slice of heaven for his new family, and gave the house to Ann for a wedding present.

Edisto is the perfect retreat from the busy city life of Charleston, SC in its quiet solitude, but its close proximity to the city means that all the delights of the number one tourist destination in the world (according to Conde Nast) are just a short drive away.

A Nice Getaway

  • 4 of 5

My family and I visited for a week in June and had a great time. Our hostess was very hospitable and a pleasure to do business with. She makes it very clear that you are renting an old, classic beach house and are not getting the Hilton, and we didn't expect it and certainly didn't pay for it. We were fortunate and thankful to get the upstairs unit (the view). We had plenty of room and everything we needed for the week. The washer and dryer came in handy, as did the nice variety DVDs on the one and only rainy night. The screened in porch is absolutely terrific, a million dollar view 24/7.

The house is located in a perfect spot, right in the middle of it all, and just steps from the beach. My wife and I enjoyed walking down Palmetto early and the mornings and on the beach in the evenings. We were able to stake our claim and set up our canopy each morning literally only a few yards out the back door. Which was very nice considering we had 3 children to watch. The beach is well used, but hardly busy and the people we met were all friendly and nice.

The Island is nothing short of enchanting from the Inter-coastal Waterway Bridge coming onto the island to the roadside fresh seafood eateries and produce stands. There was a different place to eat every night, all outstanding, and plenty of things to see when we took a break from the sun and sand. The grocery store was a pleasant surprise as well. They had all of the little necessities we needed and was pleasantly reasonably priced. Another positive for me is that it is just a short 45 minute drive to Charleston, which was one of our reasons for staying on Edisto.

I recommend Ravissant if you are looking for a relaxing, enchanting, beach vacation and you don't want to break the bank. We enjoyed it, and you will too.

New Shower heads- Not a lot of pressure and new heads might help

Bigger Window A/C Units- The beach is great during the day, but I want to be comfortable at night, especially trying to sleep.

We had a wonderful, relaxing time in this beach front house. Comfortably furnished with all that you need, comfortable beds and you can't beat the price. Very convenient and a beautiful view 24 hours a day. Will definitely stay here again.

Owner's Response: We are so pleased that you had a wonderful and relaxing vacation in our beach house. The winter months are still very mild and as the beach is less busy there is plenty of time to enjoy a peaceful moment alone taking in the beautiful scenery. We hope that you will come back soon.

Historic and classic beachfront cottage on beautiful Edisto Island

  • 5 of 5

As they say in the movie "Six days, Seven nights": "it's an island, babe, you're not going to find love here - you have to bring it with you!"

We've been renting Ravissant I for many years and still look forward to our "summer vacation" month at the beach. We have a busy life in NYC and discovered Edisto Island from a review of Edisto in the NY Times Travel section some time ago. The reviewer loved driving scenic Highway 74 with the 100+ years old oaks, hanging moss and then you reach the beach! A green-blue ocean, warm and calm, inviting you in. As Ravissant is beachfront and about 20 steps to the water - it's location is ideal. It's quiet, full of pelicans flying in formation, laughing gulls, sandpipers, and if you're lucky - gigantic sea turtles nesting nearby. The beach is a nature conservancy beyond compare. And in this house, you are an intimate part of this nature.

It is not surprising the owner allows pets as she has been known to have said "Anyone who brings their pets on vacation must love them very much".

The owner, a retired teacher, is always solicitous of her guests and sincerely wants everyone to enjoy her beach house. She is a gem!

We enjoy the rustic simplicity of the house and have always been most comfortable there. We have been renting here so long - we think of Ravissant as our "second home"!

The family arrives between rentals to make sure everything is ready and clean for their next guests. They are gracious and welcoming.

I'm glad there is no cable TV - I want to escape from that daily grind of instant news and electronics, and truly love to relax reading books. Eating out nearby at "Whaleys" is a big treat and making shrimp boils from local fisheries is easy and delightful, with some good white wine on the deck.

Ravissant is located at an ideal section of the beach - not crowded , private and quiet. If you want a true beach vacation - book here.

Beachfront beauty and simplicity - what more does one need?

  • 5 of 5

Edisto Island is a rarity - it is slow paced, has bountiful natural beauty, and clean warm ocean waters! We first discovered Edisto 17 years ago - and since that time we have never had a summer vacation anywhere else. That first year we stayed at Ravissant, and have been back here every single year. We do think of it as our vacation home! We have always brought our dogs here (they are allowed on the beach on leash), and they think this is their home too...

Yes - this is a classic, older beachfront house that has not been "updated". If you need modern amenities and décor, there are many newer or updated houses on the ocean, and you will need much deeper pockets to stay in them. When we first came here, the real estate agent warned us that "this is an OLDER home". When I walked through the doors and saw our downstairs unit, I was delighted. The rooms are large, the ceilings are high, the views are gorgeous. We tend to spend most of our waking time on the beach, and on the large screened in porch. We don't come on vacation to stay indoors. Every year I do go through a little withdrawal from the internet and television, but I am glad that this is the case. We live in a house that is over 100 years old, and can appreciate a house with character and history. We are most comfortable here, and are so happy that the owner shares her beautiful beachfront property with paying guests.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your review. We are pleased to hear you feel Ravissant is "your" vacation home. While it is an older beachfront house, it holds a special place in the hearts of our family members. Edisto Island is indeed a beautiful and relaxing escape from the hectic pace of the life most of us live from day to day. We are always happy to hear that others find the same happiness in the simple pleasures we have enjoyed here over the years. We look forward to seeing you again in the near future.

you get what you pay for

The first thing I would say is "buyer beware". Upon entering the property the cat urine smell was overwhelming. We had driven a long distance with our pets otherwise we would have simply turned around and left. The odors in the property prevented us from using the inside of the cottage except to sleep. The overall appearance of the unit is one of neglect and disrepair. The carpet was old and stained and the upholstered furniture did not appear clean. We stayed in the lower unit. There were too many small things wrong to list them all. For example, there was toothpaste on the bathroom sink, the freezer did not keep food frozen, the tv was not hooked to cable so did not work, the shower/tub combo only worked as a shower, etc. The only positive aspect of this unit is the wonderful screened porch. It is also nice to be able to bring the pets, although paying for a pet deposit on a unit that reeks of urine seems unfair. It would have been nice to know in advance that the drinking water was not palatable. This is the only time I have been so disappointed on a rental from this site.

beautiful beachfront lackluster accomodations to say the least

  • 1 of 5

disappointment started before even arriving, we had booked the upper unit specifically for better views of the ocean over the dunes only to receive a call a few days before the trip was to commence that there had been a mix up and only available was downstairs, only offer was to refund $$ if not agreeable to the change. we accepted because the timing did not allow for other plans to be made or to fore go the vacation. the owner was so gracious on the phone and even sent a personal handwritten note to confirm out stay, upon arrival the first 2 hours were spent doing major cleaning of the kitchen area as we had brought our own food, the refrigerator was dirty and disgusting with mold and the freezer had crumbs or other debris on the ice cubes, the floor was dirty with stains we refused to turn on the ceiling fans due to the dirt on the blades and the grim on the ceiling tiles, we specifically were looking for and rented this property for the love of our dog and ability to take him along on our vacation, but siting on the furniture was not an option without first covering with sheets or towels that we had brought due to being bitten by fleas or other insects, finally the bathroom i was unable to fully use, i am a bigger guy (6'1, 250) but the toilet was smaller then you would find in most RV's and i ended up going 2 miles down the road to the convenience store at least once a day to use the facilities, i am grateful that we were able to take our Lucky with us and he loved the ocean, i would encourage the owners to make the necessary improvements and clean clean clean to insure future occupants an enjoyable stay at what could be a wonderful escape along the ocean. again i thank the owners for accommodating pet lovers but encourage them to take a look at what below standard conditions they are putting their guests into no mater the rental cost

Owner's Response: First of all let me again say how very sorry we are that due to a mix-up on our part you were unable to rent the unit you desired as it had already been rented for that date by another guest. We realize you were not pleased to be in the ground floor unit but offered to change the rental date or refund your money to make amends for our mistake. We are surprised and disappointed that the unit was not cleaned to your satisfaction as we ourselves have taken over the cleaning of these units and drive over an hour each way every week to assure they are ready for incoming guests. While we do allow pets, we have never had any problems with fleas. Of course sand nats or “no see ’ums” are prevalent in this area. Perhaps these (smaller than mosquito) bugs were a problem for you as you are from an area that is not familiar with them. We have never professed Ravissant to be anything other than a classic, old and very loved family beach house. Your problems with the size of the toilet however were a complete surprise as the bathroom is not unusually small and all of the fixtures are a standard size. We have never had any complaints in the past. We will continue to try to make our guests feel welcome and comfortable and will upgrade the units as quickly as we can. Once again please accept our apology that you did not get the unit you desired due to a confusion on our part. We hope that you will return soon and that you will find things more appealing next time.
