About Sue Carter

We are the Lockwood Family from Queensbury, New York. We have travelled throughout our gorgeous nation but would be hard pressed to find a location more beautiful than the Adirondack Mountains.

Sue Carter purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Sue Carter chose World

Mere words cannot begin to describe what Augur Lake means to us. It can be better expressed through the emotions that it evokes. Joy, solitude, peace, laughter, excitement, gratitude. To us, The Rustic Retreat on Augur Lake is a piece of heaven on Earth that we are blessed to own. We feel great joy that we are able to share our home with others.

We hope that you too will be overwhelmed by the blessings of this place and experience the restfulness, calm and joy that it bestows upon us.

What makes this cottage unique

Augur Lake provides some of the best Bass fishing in the Adirondack Park. Because it is a private lake with no public access, only lake owners can enjoy the pristine waters of this Adirondack jewel. Boat traffic is light and no personal watercraft is allowed.

We have a deeded right of way to our property which requires the use of our neighbor's six hundred foot driveway which consists mostly of compacted gravel. The condition of her driveway is steep and rough. Because of this, we are now requiring renters to drive either a four wheel or all wheel drive vehicle to access the property. Thank you for understanding.

Nice relaxing stay

  • 5 of 5

Nice peaceful stay. They lake and kayaks out back are great. We were concerned with being able to rent a AWD/4WD vehicle but we were able to do so at Albany airport. We had no issues with the driveway. There is no internet or cell service, but it was nice for the family to get disconnected and just enjoy our time together. There is a lot to do around the Adirondack Mountains and this was a good jumping off point for us.

Great property - RE agent not responsive

  • 3 of 5

The property itself is great - we had a very pleasant stay over labor day weekend. After our stay, however, our security deposit was not reimbursed. I emailed Sue (the real estate agent who manages the bookings) and called her several times on her cell phone and office, but she did not respond to me. I eventually had to call Bank of America to dispute the $200 security deposit. Almost immediately, the money was reimbursed. I suppose that action was sufficient, when my phone calls were not. So, it all ended well, and I'll say again that the trip itself was very pleasant. But I was not pleased with the "customer service" overall.

The cabin was great. We practically lived on the screened in porch. On the one rainy day I alternated between reading for an hour and sleeping for an hour to the sound of rain on the lake while on the porch. We had 4 wheel drive so the driveway was not an issue--even after the heavy rain the one day. The only issue involved the geese, on only 1 day during our stay-but with a few loud hand claps they scattered. We used the kayaks to paddle around the gorgeous lake. The house was spotless and ready for use when we arrived. Thank you very much for making your getaway place available.

Owner's Response: Thank you for providing us this lovely feedback on our vacation home. We are so happy that you had a great vacation week and had a chance to relax on our screened porch. It is our favorite room in the house! Thanks too for heeding our request to bring an appropriate vehicle down the driveway. We really enjoyed the daily log that you left in our home's guestbook. We had many laughs reading about your feelings about the geese. We cannot begin to adequately express our gratitude to you for taking the time to share your experiences with us and other potential renters. It is so important for others to read that, "what you see on the site, is what you get," from families who were guests in our home. Thank you.

Peace & Quiet!

  • 5 of 5

This location is amazing! We prefer the uncharted waters and tranquility that the big lakes can't offer. The breezes that rush through this cottage are simply spectacular, and the lack of noise from the world forces you to relax and do nothing but feel good. The lake is at arms length, and never has more than a couple silent, non-motorized water crafts cruising by. The entire property is set up for kids and adults to deal with zero stress, and take time away from cyberspace. Never mind the driveway issue listed. As of August, no issues..We will definitely be back!

Peaceful Waterfront

  • 4 of 5

We arrived to find that the property was even better than the description. The cottage is very nice and spacious. It would have been a little hot, but with the fans in the bedroom windows, the airflow throughout was perfect. The screen porch was excellent for the evenings if it got a little buggy. It was nice and quiet around the lake and we all enjoyed the kayaks and rowboat. There was very little motorboat traffic on the lake and we all rowed/paddled the entire lake. Fishing yielded many bass, perch, pumpkin seed, crappie and northern pike! I recommend Cleos and white grub jigs. The driveway was as described. We have a front wheel drive car and made it down and up the drive a couple times with no issues. With the last trip up, we couldn't get out. I ended up backing up the drive without a problem. If we had AWD or RWD, it would have been simple. If you are a good driver, you can figure it out. The drive is worth it! We drove a little father for shopping and went to Hannaford's in Plattsburgh. It had much better produce and variety than the Tops in Peru. There is also a Gander Mountain and Dick's for fishing supplies. We day tripped to Vermont. We took the ferry near Plattsburgh because it would have been over $60 each way at the closer one. A nice scenic drive to the north and we crossed for $23 each way. We only had one issue, we ran out of propane, and with one call to the property manager it was quickly taken care of. The gas grill is very nice, the hot spots are in the back corners. :-) Oh, don't feed the geese and shoo them away before they get to the grass, it will stay much cleaner. I can't think of much else besides that the kids can't wait to come back next summer!

Owner's Response: We are happy that your family enjoyed your week in our home on Augur Lake and thank you for sharing your experiences with others in this review. We are sorry that you had a problem during your stay but are pleased that Sue, our property manager, remedied the situation right away. We hope that the token sent to you upon your return home made up for the inconvenience of not having propane for a few hours. Since your departure, we had the driveway regraded to make the ride smoother for future guests and would like to once again stress the importance of using a 4WD or AWD to access our home. We hope to prevent situations like yours from happening again. We look forward to welcoming you back to our home at anytime and thank you for taking the time to leave such a pleasant review that was chock full of information and great advice. ~the Lockwood's

Late Summer vacation

  • 4 of 5

The cottage was exactly as pictured with many amenities. Kitchen was well equipped with plenty of utensils and cookware. Great selection of DVDs and books for rainy days - we had several unfortunately. Ausable Chasm was a great excursion as well as Lake Placid, Plattsburgh and surrounding area.

The Lake is very pretty to look at by the campfire. The weed infestation makes it impossible to swim from the shore and frustrating getting fishing lines caught up. Kayaks were a great bonus. Saw a variety of wildlife including bald eagle, beaver and 3 fawns very close to cottage.

The driveway is indeed quite steep and difficult to maneuver. We chanced it not having a 4 wheel drive vehicle and survived but it was a nuisance. We wouldn't choose to stay here again unless we had a car with higher suspension. The neighbor who refuses to fix the drive must be a grumpy person - its unfortunate as the setting by the lake is quite lovely. Getting in and out was just a hassle that added a bit of stress to an otherwise relaxing vacation.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. We are pleased that you found everything within our control satisfactory. We agree, the driveway is a point of frustration and that is why we clearly state it's condition on our VRBO listing and advise our guests that four wheel and all wheel drive vehicles are strongly recommended. We have never had any intention of misleading our guests. Unfortunately, milfoil has become a real problem within the entire Adirondack Park and like other lake communities, our association has struggled with ways in which to combat it while abiding by the stiff regulations put in place by the Adirondack Park Agency. In June, our Lake Association was given permission to stock Augur with sterile carp. Experience has shown that over time, by eating the milfoil, the carp will help eradicate this nuisance weed. We have however, raked and hand harvested the weeds from our shoreline to the end of our dock so that our renters have a pleasant spot in which to swim. In addition, there are many lovely areas around the lake, including the small island visible from our home, where our guests can swim weed free. Again, we thank you for taking the time to review our home and we wish you many blessings. The Lockwood Family
