About the property

3800 Square Feet, 3 Master Suites, 2 Gourmet Kitchens And A Sleeping Loft

Shady Grove offers spectacular views of the Smoky Mountains featuring Mount Mitchell from every room. The first floor has a timber framed open floor plan with a spacious living room, dining room and gourmet kitchen. A large granite breakfast bar will sit five. Kids will love the sleeping loft! The first floor suite features a king size bed, walk-in closet and a gorgeous spa bathroom. In the living room, cozy up to the wood burning fireplace. Entertain your friends on the large covered deck with beautiful wicker furniture. The kitchen boasts restaurant' style appliances, a butlers pantry with washer and dryer. The kitchen opens up to a fenced-in yard for your pet's safety.

The lower level features 2 master suites with walk-in closets and adjacent baths, a family room and a kitchenette all which open to a stone patio.

All of the home's counter tops are granite and all the cabinets are cherry.

One of our previous guests described the home as "elegant with a rustic touch". Shady Grove is made from hand-cut timbers secured by wooden pegs just like homes were constructed hundreds of years ago. The ceilings soar up 26 feet on the first floor and 11 foot ceilings on the lower floor. While the style is certainly Craftsman, European touches are found throughout the home.

Shady Grove is at the end of a lane and sits on approximately 12 acres of virgin forest. We hope you will come and experience our little piece of heaven.

About Karen Periard

Tim and Karen Periard escaped to paradise after 22 years of hustle and bustle in Atlanta, GA. Karen recently retired from the banking industry and manages her rental on a full time basis. Tim has adjusted to the serenity and small town living that this area offers. We are devoted to our red lab, Raluca and want your pets to be at home here too!!! For the past 37 years, we have been collecting and restoring antique furniture and Shady Grove houses some of our favorite pieces.

Karen Periard purchased this house in 2008

Why Karen Periard chose Old Fort

After an extensive search for a location to build our dream house, we fell in love with the secluded, heavily wooded 11 acres at the end of Evergreen Drive. We never get tired of the spectacular mountain views and the outdoor activities that our development offers. We had studied craftsman style homes for years before we enlisted a timber frame team to make our dreams come true!

What makes this house unique

Karen designed every inch of this home and it's unique finishes. She loves to entertain at Shady Grove and hopes you will too. Wildlife in in abundance and privacy is assured. The deck is a perfect al -fresco dining spot. The greater Asheville area offers fun galore but we hope you will enjoy coming home to Shady Grove as we do.

Wonderful and relaxing.

  • 5 of 5

This is our second time at Shady Grove. We try to get together once a year with cousins we don't get to see often and we were so happy to be able to book and stay again. Tim and Karen are fantastic owners and the property is beautiful. Beds are all very comfortable and the loft (kids area) is so perfect for teens. The view from the back deck is amazing and the perfect way to have a relaxing morning cup of tea or coffee or some sunset quiet time. The kitchen is perfect for big family meals or a small breakfast, with everything on hand that you need. There are grocery stores close by, in both Old Fort and Black Mountain. If the outdoors is for you, like it is for us, you can easily get to Catawba Falls for a really nice hike and quick cool off on a hot day or head off on a longer drive and enjoy Pisgah National Forest, Dupont State Forest or the many trails and hikes.from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Asheville is great for a meal or a walkabout and the Biltmore estate is a must see, all are within a reasonable drive. We have loved our time at shady Grove and will be back again to enjoy the view and comfort. Thank you Tim and Karen!

The most gorgeous views of the mountains!

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed staying at Shady Grove during our vacation to the Black Mountain / Asheville area. The house is perfectly situated, so the views of Mt. Mitchell are simply breathtaking. In the early morning, one can see the clouds scattered throughout the mountain peaks and at the end of the day, it affords a beautiful view of the sunset. Shady Grove is a wonderful example of timber frame craftsmanship and is very tastefully appointed, with a large kitchen and everything a family would ever need during a getaway, including WiFi. Tim provided us with a helpful orientation to the house and its features upon our arrival. We encountered several deer and a snapping turtle on their private driveway and one day spotted a very large black bear ambling across the country road leading up to their neighborhood, which is an amazing sight I will never forget! Karen and Tim are both great communicators regarding your stay, which truly made the entire vacation both relaxing and peaceful. We look forward to returning to Shady Grove soon.

The Views!!

  • 5 of 5

As most other people state the views from this home are absolutely spectacular. The house is roomy and nice but the views are breath taking even when staying during the winter, can’t even fathom the view in the fall. All the essentials are in the house that you will need. The road to get to the house can be intimidating but after a few drives up and down it will provide a better feeling and maneuverability. We drove to black mountain almost every day since we visited the biltmore and there is plenty of cute independently owned restaurants with excellent food. We all loved our stay!

Perfect! The house and it’s views were spectacular!

  • 5 of 5

Karen and Tim were very helpful and close by if needed. Kitchen is compete with everything you need for creating great dinners and fantastic memories. Beds were super comfortable. Roads getting to the house pretty steep, it would be a little scary if you have icy conditions. Shopping is about 15 minutes away, better to just come prepared. Can’t say enough about it. We will definitely be back.

It was awesome!

  • 5 of 5

We just stayed here with a large group. It is a beautiful home, with lots of room to sleep, and my daughters loved the loft! The owners went above and beyond in helping us get up the mountain when the roads had iced, and a couple of our cars couldn’t make it up. They shuttled us up, and offered to come back to help us get down, although we didn’t need that, as our cars could make it the next day after the roads were salted. Further, they reimbursed us one night when we were delayed in getting up the mountain and had to stay in a hotel upon an ice storm the day we arrived. All in all, we had a wonderful experience, and enjoyed our time as a family, making great memories together.

Beautiful Mountain Getaway

  • 4 of 5

This house is fantastic! Beautiful layout, kitchen and bathrooms. The porch view is gorgeous! The road/driveway is extremely steep and difficult to navigate. The furniture in the living room is very uncomfortble and outdated. For those sleeping in the loft, there is no full bath to accommodate you. Loft guests are forced to shower in one of the three masters. There are only two gate keys and a small parking area so large groups with more than two cars can be difficult to manage. It's about a 35 minute drive the downtown Asheville. The town of Old Fort is super small and dry. If you are looking for a quiet getaway, this is the place! If you are looking for a house to stay in while visiting Asheville, this is pretty far away and on some pretty dangerous country roads, might want to look closer like Fairview.

Owner's Response: We try our best to perfectly accommodate our guests and have been doing so for almost 5 years. This guest however is immature and came 4 hours early. She seemingly was ignorant to the fact that a loft does not have bathing facilities. She also missed the point that mountains are mountains. The reservation was made for 6 people but the reality was that they crammed more than a dozen people in our beautiful home. She did not know how to find a home for her group and then tried to blame it on us. We invite you to read our other reviews.
