This gorgeous architectural dream home was completed in December 2012 when I rang in the New Year in my new home away from home.
Casa Jane is located in the small community of Zacatitos in Baja California Sur, Mexico. It is approximately 12 kilometers or 40 minutes by car along a partial dirt road. The drive itself is magnificent but it is also long and bumpy. Zacatitos hugs the Sea of Cortez's white sandy beaches and aqua blue waters to the south, and the mysterious dreamy desert to the north.
Inhabited primarily by Americans and Canadians, Zacatitos remains virtually untouched by the tourism that exists only miles away in Cabo San Lucas. The house runs 100% on solar power. There is no electricity in Zacatitos. That said, it has all the modern conveniences - a washing machine, dishwasher, refrigerator with ice maker, barbecue, wireless internet, and stereo system. There is no TV, but there are books, magazines, games, and a swimming pool. You do not need to bring shampoo, soap, towels or beach towels. Everything is provided. Even sunscreen! There is also a gas fire pit which is great in the evening when the sky is full of stars.
Since the home was architecturally crafted, the lighting on the property is stunning. However, care must be taken with use of power. (Instructions are at the house with details on how to live with solar).
There are two bedrooms, each with a queen size bed. Blow-up air mattresses are available if you should require extra sleeping arrangements. There are two bathrooms upstairs and one full bathroom on the main floor that has an amazing outdoor shower. The kitchen is fully equipped for cooking and entertaining.
Guests have access to a clean, quiet, modern home, a swimming pool, iPod dock for music, books and magazines, full kitchen, breathtaking views, sunrises and sunsets, nearby uncrowded beach, peaceful walks.
It is a fifteen minute walk to the beach and a five or ten minute walk to Zac's Bar & Grill, where you can get great food and beverages. Halfway to San Jose along the coast road is Buzzards, another local eating establishment, Drunkin Sailor (great ceviche and fish tacos), and a little more pricy is Flora Farms and Tamarindos, both lovely restaurants that serve fresh food from their own farm and gardens. Zacatitos has a small Farmer's Market on Wednesday morning in front of Zac's Bar and Grill. There’s another larger market in San Jose on Saturday as well as the Art Walk every Thursday evening. A fish truck periodically drives through Zacatitos to sell fresh fish to local residents on Thursday mornings (I believe - but ask around).
San Jose is the nearest town. It's small and quaint, and has many fine restaurants and shops. The area boasts fabulous fishing, snorkelling and surfing. Information on who to contact and where to go is listed in the house manual. Definitely check out Guacamaya and Hangman restaurants in San Jose for great local food, and Cynthia's for fresh, organic home cooking.
John and Stephanie Pepper are my property managers and will come by to clean the pool, check on the generator and solar, and water plants. They are basically available to you during your stay. For a fee, Stephanie will also purchase groceries and stock the kitchen prior to your stay. You can contact them.
Stephanie's Mexican Cell Number:
624-171-4325 which you can dial just like that from your US phone, if needed when you arrive. They live right up the road. If you call from the US you must put 011-521 first.
Her US cell phone is 916-316-7830. When dialling from Mexico you need to put +1 then the number.
Zacatitos is a bit tricky to find. You can pre-rent a car (jeep or truck recommended) and I will send you very clear directions complete with photos prior to your visit.
The best times to stay are from November to June, however, any time's a good time in the Baja.
Enjoy your stay at Casa Jane!
* The house was featured on the cover of the April 2013 issue of Canadian Architect Magazine and was also in Wallpaper Magazine and New York Magazine in 2014. It was designed by Campos Leckie Architects of Vancouver, BC, and built by APA Arquitectura in San Jose del Cabo.

Casa Jane is located off the grid. It has all the amenities but is away from the fray in a quiet community approximately 40 minutes east of San Jose. Contact me for driving directions.
There are many good restaurants in the area, but only one out in Zacatitos - Zac's Bar & Grill. Zac's offers good food and grrreat margaritas, as well as a community atmosphere. It's the place locals gather.
There is a Farmer's Market in front of Zac's every Wednesday morning, and a larger market in San Jose on Saturday morning till about 2 pm. During high season, the art district of San Jose has an Art Walk every Thursday evening, which is a must do.
There is golf, fishing, paddle boarding, and surfing all at your fingertips, as well as miles of white sandy beaches. You can check in town for rentals or ask at Zac's and someone may be able to help you out. I have directions to Cabo Pulmo for snorkelling. I recommend Eco Tours. They are excellent. I also have directions to the hot springs and waterfall in Santiago. Please ask.
Todos Santos is a great day trip. If you have the time, La Paz is a two hour drive but to do it right, you should plan to stay one or two nights.
Guacamaya's and Hangman are two great authentic restaurants right in San Jose, and Cynthia's serves delicious organic fare. I also like The Drunken Sailor, which is by La Playita. Flora Farms and Tamarindo's serve food directly from farm to table, as well as local fish and meat. They are more high-end and will require a reservation.
There is so much to do in the area, and it's also the perfect place to do nothing. Grab a good book and sit by the pool, or pack a snack and take it to the beach and enjoy hours of surf, sand and Baja breezes. There's nothing like it.
