Overview

About the property

Quiet, Secluded, Edge of Forest. 3 Bedrooms. Short Stroll To Beach.

Quiet and secluded, tucked away at the edge of native Sitka spruce and hemlock forest, our lovingly furnished house is an easy one block to the beach. The 1000-sq-ft wraparound deck offers a unique reverse-birds-eye view up into the huge trees just feet away. Wildlife abounds, the landscaping with native foliage blending seamlessly into the woods.

The house has been completely remodeled, with hardwood interiors, lots of skylights and vaulted ceilings. The large master bedroom (king-sized bed) offers a stunning view of the woods through the floor-to-ceiling picture windows making up three sides of the room. A small second bedroom has a double bed, and the living room has a queen sofa-sleeper. A single rollaway cot is also available. A (tiny, very cute) "kid's bunkhouse" sleeps 2-3 and adjoins the deck near the bedrooms.

Reflecting my love of cooking, the airy, spacious kitchen has lots of counter space, plethora of cooking utensils and appliances (microwave, coffee-maker, blender, etc., although no dishwasher). Charcoal barbecue available on the kitchen patio.

One seating area of the living room centers around the fireplace with comfy sofas. Another area is geared toward entertainment. Dining nook comprises the third area. High-speed WiFi is free, so movies can be streamed (or of course DVDs) to the flat screen monitor. The built-in hardwood bookcases are chock full of rainy-day entertainment: extensive library of books, DVDs, and board games.

About Susy

Home-grown Oregonian. Musician. Gardener. Muddy boots type. I love adding a book to the library, finding a new toy for the kitchen, landscaping with native plants and, as well, slogging it out in the rain, rebuilding a fence when a tree has kindly dropped a limb on it (OK, maybe more fun when it's all safely over and I'm warm and dry).

I also love sharing the house with our guests, many of whom have returned again and again for 15 years or more, the memories of themselves and their children becoming intertwined with the house itself.

Susy purchased this house in 1987

Why Susy chose Tierra Del Mar

* Long, quiet, pristine beach where you can often wander for hours without encountering another person. Dunes, bluffs, and shore pine forest adjacent to beach are protected land and accessible only on foot or by horseback. No structures or development at all – just peace and quiet.

* Unsurpassed beach for kids, dogs and other humans: The vast majority of the beach being far away from any roads or structures, dogs (and kids) can safely run to their hearts' content.

Within 10 Miles (!): Unique dichotomy of utter seclusion, with no commercial establishments whatsoever, in Tierra del Mar with near-by Pacific City’s (5 miles south) plethora of fun things to do:

*** Pacific City: Excellent pubs, restaurants, and shops in nearby Pacific City. Crabbing, clamming, fresh-water river fishing, boating, kayaking; deep sea fishing and dory boat excursions launched from the beach at Pacific City. Surfing, scuba diving, wind surfing, jet skiing as well as hang-gliding along with equipment rentals for all of the above.

*** On the quiet side: Two capes (Cape Kiwanda and Cape Lookout), each with their unique character. Bird & wildlife sanctuaries. Estuary and protected breeding grounds for birds and wildlife. Waylen Island State Natural Area. Unique whale-watching vantage points. Dunes. Lots and lots of hiking in nearby state forests. Surf fishing, clamming at Tierra del Mar’s beach. Great biking (rentals available) along 3-Capes Road.

What makes this house unique

* Quiet and secluded, tucked away at the edge of native Sitka spruce and hemlock forest, our lovingly furnished house is an easy one block to the beach. The 1000-sq-ft wraparound deck offers a unique reverse-birds-eye view up into the huge trees that stand within touching distance. Wildlife abounds, our landscaping with native foliage blending seamlessly into the woods.

* Kid's Bunkhouse: Tiny, extremely cute (!) complete with its own skylight, set of bunkbeds, and Kids' Decor, it is located a few feet from the main house, opening onto the kitchen patio.

* The house unashamedly reflects my own tastes: Lots and lots of books and board games. Although there is free high-speed WiFi and flat-screen for DVDs for streaming, we intentionally have no television. The quiet atmosphere encourages coming home from hours at the beach to laze by the fireplace, reading, snoozing, watching a movie or re-discovering the art of dominos; maybe later cooking up something purely for fun, or relaxing on deck listening to bird song and the ocean's roar and doing... nothing whatsoever…

Guestbook comments from the owner

The Guardenia Street house is a new favorite place to stay for our family of four! We loved everything about this wonderfully private house in the woods that is a short walk to the beach -- the best of both worlds! The house is lovely, with plenty of room for a big crowd. The bunkhouse became a favorite hang out for our teenager (the few times we weren't out enjoying the gorgeous parks, beaches, and sights up and down the coast). And, waking up "in the woods" in the fantastic master bedroom was the perfect way to start each day.

Of course, we need to say that Susy is great! Although we were nervous because this is the first house we've rented outside the major companies (Airbnb, VRBO, etc.), her communication was first rate. She was quick to answer all our questions and concerns. Everything went very smoothly, and we can highly recommend using her vacation rental system. Again, Susy is great!

The beauty of Tierra del Mar, the community where the house is located, is that it is quiet, private, and in the heart of every fantastic day trip you would want. We explored the coast from Manzanita to the north to Lincoln City in the south, and many points in between. There is to much to do that we could fill a book with our adventures. Some of our favorites included:

- Oswald West State Park north of Manzanita (a must see)

- Kayak Tillamook County trip to the Three Graces in Garibaldi

- Oysters at Fish Peddler in Bay City

- Dune climbing at Cape Kiwanda (seriously, 5 minutes south), followed by chocolate mousse and beer sampler tray at Pelican Brewery on the beach

- Walking the beach at Tierra Del Mar (deserted most days!)

- Cape Lookout

- Bayocean beach

- Geocaching all over the place!!!

- and on and on and on...

Hints:

Groceries - Chester's IGA in Pacific City (produce stand on the weekends is good); Safeway in Tillamook is another good stop.

Produce - lots of local farmers markets.

Bread - Grateful Bread bakery in Pacific City!!

Clothes (if you forgot to pack a jacket) - outlet mall in Lincoln City.

Again, we had a wonderful stay. Hope you'll have the chance to enjoy this amazing property and the beauty of the Oregon coast!

A Wonderful Relaxing Stay

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I really appreciated the view from the large master bedroom. The table and chairs in the bedroom enabled us to enjoy our breakfasts while bird watching. We saw a Stellar's Jay busily working on building a nest and also a beautiful orange hummingbird. The walk to the beach is short and the bonus is all of the bunnies in the yards. Some are so friendly they will come right up to you so we started bringing carrot sticks and lettuce with us on the way to the beach. Pacific City is a short drive south for supplies and places to eat. Another bonus, the beach is really private. We only saw a few other people on the beach during our stay. Highly recommend for a relaxing stay at the coast!

Off the Beaten Track...For 40 miles, Highway 101 turns inland between Tillamook and Lincoln City, 5 miles north of Pacific City and due west of Portland. But running along the coastline (and unknown to most travelers) is beautiful 3 Capes Road. Nestled between 2 of the majestic capes is the tiny beach-front community of Tierra del Mar. This is the Oregon Coast of the old days. Even at the height of the summer season, you can usually walk for miles without encountering another person.

The beach runs from Cape Kiwanda nearly to Cape Lookout, 8 to 10 miles of mostly deserted white sandy beach. Backing on miles of protected land, a walk in either direction on the beach passes nothing but natural bluffs and grasslands. A few miles north lies an estuary where you can spot everything from herons and eagles to seals and foxes. At the other end of the beach is the rarely visited north side of majestic Cape Kiwanda, where climbing the high dune to the top to view the spectacular rock formations and caves far below is an unforgettable experience.
