We know how important your time away is for you and your family. We invite you to visit us for a truly enjoyable vacation experience. Nestled in the middle of the Blue Ridge Mountains / Pisgah National Forest, Pura Vida Cottage is a magical mountain home. Pura Vida means “the Essence of Life” and we think you will agree that our cottage helps you experience just that – the Essence of Life.
If you are looking for a personal retreat, a romantic get-away, a great family vacation or a place to reconnect with old friends, Pura Vida Cottage is for you. This is a home where you can rest, refresh, and renew your connection to your true being and your relationships with your loved ones.
Pura Vida Cottage is a spacious, single level, cedar sided, two bedrooms, one bath cottage that sleeps 4 – 6 adults. Two large decks with comfortable furniture, outdoor grill and dining area, with an outdoor fire pit enhance the comfort and ambiance of this mountain getaway.
Pura Vida Cottage welcomes families with children. Your children can run, play, explore the creeks and just have fun in the large front yard. We provide puzzles, an extensive library for readers of all ages, board games and a Wii sports for indoor entertainment – just in case of rain.
We understand that for many, your pet is a part of your family so we invite you to bring your canine family member or your indoor cat with you as well. Your four-legged family members are welcome with a completed pet application and our prior approval. There is a small fenced area in the back where your dog can play off leash. Close the deck gate and your dog can go and come through the side door’s medium size doggie door.
We provide a litter box for your indoor cat - you will need to provide his/her favorite brand of litter to reduce anxiety. Please bring your pet's favorite toys, food, meds, and bed so he/she can enjoy your vacation as much as you do.
The cottage is equipped with everything you need for your stay. You just bring your personal items and food. We will provide you with a list of suggested items you may want to bring with you.
We believe that time away is for reconnecting, renewing relationships, creating memories with family and loved ones. We do not have cable (it isn’t available here) or satellite TV (it would raise your rates far too much). But we do understand that sometimes, relaxing in front of the TV together may be just what you want. So, we provide you with an extensive library of VHS and DVDs and unlimited access to NetFlix. Just turn on the TV and the Wii, click on NetFlix and select the shows you want to watch.
Unplugging from the hectic work world is an important piece of relaxing. Still, there are times when you may want to connect with family or really need to touch base with work. We have wireless internet throughout the house that is significantly faster than dial up – but may not be as high speed as you are used to in the big city. Of course, being in the country, we cannot guarantee that it will always be working due to downed lines, and other technical issues beyond our control. If you must get online, our public library (downtown Bakersville) has a dependable server for your convenience. The ladies there will be more than happy to assist you.
Cell phone reception is sometimes spotty, depending on which service you use and the weather. Understanding how important it is to be able to touch base with home and work, we provide a landline that is free to you for local and unlimited US long distance calls during your stay.
You can even make arrangements for special accommodations such as having meals prepared, childcare, elder care, and dog sitting services. We will assist you in making arrangements with local guides for fishing, horseback riding, art studio tours and much more.
We want your vacation to be memorable, magical and magnificent. If you are ready to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life, are looking for a place to truly relax, want to explore the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, meet talented artisans, make new friends, have new adventures, or just want a place to relax and unwind, Pura Vida Cottage is the perfect place for you.

About Nancy Gryder
Pam came to Asheville in 1980 and after several years in Tennessee, moved back in 1998. Pam loves the outdoor adventures, local artists, and warm hearted people of the area. She enjoys sharing the beauty and wonder of the area with others through the cottage. A mountain native, Nancy grew up a an hour's drive from Bakersville in Asheville, NC. Together, we moved to Bakersville in 1999 just 4.5 miles up the road. The Green Cove property became our home in 2007 along with our dogs, cat and horses. We are both veteran special education teachers and provide tutoring to the students in our community. We have an appreciation and reverence for the beauty and unique energy of the Smoky Mountains. After much heartfelt soul searching and weighing our desire for privacy against the belief that others will find peace and joy here, we have decided to open the cottage to others. We are offering the Pura Vida Cottage for vacation rental so others can experience the true Essence of Life. We will do our best to make sure you have everything you need during your stay. We live in the 'big' house on the same property. We will respect and protect your privacy but will be available if you need us.

This is exactly what my family and I were looking for and expecting during our weekend stay! A quiet cabin not too far from Roan mountain for hiking! Our golden retriever was happy that he could be outside with us on the wrap around porch. We brought our own food and made use of the kitchen supplies as there are no restaurants anywhere nearby. Although this place sleeps 4+ people, beware that people over 6 ft tall may have their feet hanging off of the twin sized beds. A downside to this place for us was that the pictures looked as though there was a creek with some sort of access point right by the house. To our disappointment, this was not the case. Overall cozy, clean, and good experience!
Great first experience on VRBO. Positives: The owner Nancy was extremely accommodating. Examples are we had two dogs which they would let out during the day and feed. We had three extra people show up, no problem. We actually got the checkout day wrong and there was still no issue with Nancy, the owner. To be fair to anyone considering this property - it's not a Hilton. There is great Wi Fi but once you leave the driveway you may not have cell coverage for an hour. It is 20-45 minutes to get to civilization and that isn't much. We did part of the Appalachian Trail and ate at every local restaurant. If you want a get away without a ton of rules this is your place. If you want marble countertops than you should go to a Marriott or Hilton hotel. Thank you to the owners.
just like home
The view is great!! The house has everything you would need. My family loves coming to the Blue Ridge Parkway in the fall. We didn't get very good cell service or Wi-Fi, but we were on a family get away and needed to spend quality time together anyways. We never met our landlord, she just called and asked if we needed anything and to call her if we did. I liked that. The house feels like a home and not a hotel. The rooms are all a good size and there are a lot of DVD's and video tapes to choose from. I would definitely stay here again.
A wonderful experience, can't wait to go back!
What a wonderful trip! The cabin was easy to find and exactly as described. The property is secluded enough to be peaceful yet close enough to town that you still have all the modern conveniences. The owner, Nancy, was such a gracious hostess! She stopped by and checked in with us and made sure we had everything we needed. The cabin is extremely clean and very well stocked with everything you need. There are a couple of good restaurants nearby if you want to dine out. There is a stream that runs in front of the cabin, and the sound of the running water is so relaxing. The cabin has two bedrooms and can easily sleep 5-6 people. The king size bed was very comfortable and we slept well. The owner lives next door so if you need anything she is right there. We enjoyed petting her very friendly horses and donkeys. If you are looking for a quiet getaway in the mountains this is a great choice. We can't wait to return!
Very comfortable and roomy cottage. Best of all, our dogs enjoyed it too! We would certainly come back again should we visit the area and recommend to others as well. A few issues with the internet beyond their control.
We loved having you stay in our cottage. Your dogs are wonderful. Thank you for being patient with the internet. I have had Frontier out (twice) and they say they have fixed the problem. I guess that's one of the wonderful perks of living in the country ~ we can have internet knowing that there may be days of interference due to things beyond our control. Since the last "fix" it has been working well. We look forward to your next visit.
LOVE the cabin!
After a six hour drive, we got to the cabin, it was everything we needed and just as pictured and explained. If you want a quiet spot to re-charge your batteries this is a great rental. Our dog, Marley, traveled with us on our vacation. She was as excited to be there as we were! The little town of Bakersville was five to ten minutes away. The most popular place there is Helen's, don't sleep in if you want breakfast as they sever until 11am., but every meal we had there was good food and great prices. Will definitely be on our list of places to return too! And most of all.........the southern hospitality was alive and well!! Thanks for a great stay.....
Helen's is a wonderful place to get the real feel of Bakersville. We are lucky to have such a great little historic place so nearby. Marley was great, loved meeting him. We are looking forward to your next visit.
An outdoor haven, the Blue Ridge Mountains offer something for everyone. Visit a historic grist mill and watch corn being ground into meal and packaged using the power of water. This is the perfect area for anyone who enjoys outdoor photography. Visit local artisans and discover unique arts and crafts of all kinds.
