Property description

This expansive property, preserved intact by a conservation easement in the 1980's, is on its own private peninsula. Surrounded on three sides by water, the farm sits on the shores of the Bagaduce River where it spills into a large basin with islands and innumerable coves before continuing on its way to Castine and Penobscot Bay. Crowning the property is the Fowler Bald Eagle Preserve, home to a pair of eagles for over 70 years. The nest can be seen perched dramatically at the water's edge as you paddle by in a canoe. While the old 1830's farmhouse has its architecture preserved intact, it is also updated with modern amenities, creating a home of both antique charm and complete comfort. This unique property offers the vacationer an extraordinary Maine adventure as well as a place to just kickback and soak up the serenity and natural beauty of the Maine coastal waters. The apartment is on the second floor with a master bedroom with a queen size bed and adjoining full bath. Sharing the bath is a double room leading to the open kitchen and sitting room with gorgeous water view. All rooms have lovely views of the surrounding fields and woods, some having water views.
The house is furnished with antiques and beautifully sanded old floors. The kitchen has new appliances and granite counters. The apartment comes furnished with cotton sheets, duvets, towels and other amenities, such as a seasonal washer/dryer, microwave, DVD, oyster shucker and lobster pot. There is a picnic table and a granite patio with a sweeping view over the fields down to the water.
Located on the Brooksville peninsula, the farm is between historic Blue Hill and Deer Isle. It is surrounded by other small farms, local restaurants, bakery, blueberry and vegetable stands. You can take numerous scenic drives along the water, or do walking tours and visit the various beach areas. It is a perfect base from which to explore the great Maine outdoors with its sailing, kayaking, canoeing, hiking, and fishing. Then again, you may simply want to indulge in more leisurely activities, like dining out on the great seafood and local produce, or visiting the antique stores, the galleries showing local artists, and the many local arts and crafts.

Situated in mid coast Maine and set on 162 secluded acres, the farm provides its own wealth of activities as well as offering a base from which to explore the surrounding area. There are the historic towns of Blue Hill, South Brooksville, Deer Isle and Stonington, all must sees. There are the many scenic drives along the coast taking you in and out of innumerable coves and blueberry fields. There are all the farmers markets richly supplied by the local farms with their bounty of local produce, baked goods, cheeses, meats, eggs and poultry. There are the many local galleries showing off Maine artists and the many antique stores. Like the farm with its own nature preserve for the Bald Eagle, the area has also the Holbrook Island Sanctuary on Cape Rosier, offering a marvelous walk through its preserve. If you go, stop at the wide pebble beach on Cape Rosier and take the scenic loop drive with its spectacular views. Stop also at 'The Good Life Center,' the legacy of Helen and Scott Nearing, early pioneers of back to the land and organic farming. Right next door is the Eliot Coleman 'Four Season Farm', one of the finest organic farms in the area. The area overflows with interest and activity in food, nature, water and wildlife.

Owner info

Year Purchased: 1970

About the owner: My grandfather, Rear Admiral J.W. Fowler, purchased this farm for his son, my Dad. Born and raised in Maine, Grandad wanted to come home in his retirement and spend more time with his family. So, he bought this amazing saltwater farm from Ada Tapley, one of the original owners of the Mills Point property. While my grandfather stayed 6 months of every year at the farm, the family gathered a week here and a week there every summer. When the great grandkids were born (he lived to be 99!) they too grew up coming to Mills Point. We gathered from as far away as NYC (myself) and California and Minnesota (my sisters.) Like homing pigeons we come back every year. We revisit our old haunts, like foraging for mussels on the shoals of the Bagaduce at low tide. We explore the tidal pools looking for brittle stars, sea cucumbers and sea urchins. And we always see the eagles. In fact, we are now increasing the size of the bald eagle preserve to encompass 57 acres, almost the entire tip of our peninsula, a prime spot for fishing for the eagles.

Why the Owner Chose Brooksville, ME, USA:
Grandad chose the property because of its unique size, its composition of fields, woods and extensive deep water shoreline, and its ability to be both a place for recreation and for farming. Now sheep graze the fields. In the past the farm has supported dairy and beef cows and various vegetables. Having grown up on a farm my Grandad was not finished with farming even in his 80's. Furthermore, having had a long and successful career in the US Navy, he still loved to be close to the water. He continued to sail regularly, not only in his own sailboat moored at the beautiful Buck's Harbor in South Brooksville, but also in the retired skippers race off Castine, which he did well into his 90's.

The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
The farm is at the end of a quiet road and offers both complete seclusion and space to roam. The light plays on its fields and water in infinite variety. We have seen double rainbows arching over the waters at the end of our long fields. You can be completely self contained at the farm, on its wide fields and ever present waters. You can take a hike on the Mills Point Trail, (a 30-40 minute walk out.) You can take the farm's canoe out for short jaunts or much longer day trips. There are islands to stop at for a picnic lunch or a swim. You may tie up the canoe at the famed Bagaduce Lunch for a lobster roll or fried clams. For a full day excursion, there is the voyage all the way to Castine and back. There are mussels to collect along the way and bring back for a linguine dinner, a favorite meal of the Fowlers. And there are pools at high tide that are perfect for swimming, warmed by the mud flats underneath. You will see seals, cormorants, loons and other bird life along the way. Again, you may just want to walk to the shore and sit at one of many viewing spots to quietly breathe it all in. As one friend has said, 'Every day is a good day at the farm.'
