Overview

About the property

3 Bedroom, 2 Bath With Forest Land In Backyard

The house location is a 'local's secret' due to its quiet, tranquil settings. This neighborhood community is known as Christmas Valley. The house is close to major resorts and casinos yet just far enough away from the hustle and bustle of South Shore tourism. The jaw-dropping beauty of Lake Tahoe itself and its west shore beaches are 10-15 minutes depending on your favorite spot. Summer fun offers hiking and biking trails within minutes of the property. Golfing at Lake Tahoe Golf Course and Paradise Golf are within 10 minutes in one direction or drive approximately 15 minutes the other direction to go fishing in Hope Valley.

Winter enjoyment provides both downhill and X-country skiing nearby and the kids can sled right in the backyard. Winter ski areas known around the world include Sierra at Tahoe (15 minutes), Heavenly Valley (20 minutes), and Kirkwood (25 minutes).

House backs to forest service land and you can start your hike and/or the kids can climb plenty of rocks right up the hill from the backyard. The house sits in a residential neighborhood that is safe for kids to ride bike. 2-car garage is available for your use so bring all your ‘fun’ gear and lock it up safely as you go from one recreational activity to another and not worry about storing it all in your car. Once your day of adventure is over, spend quality family time playing cards, games, or watching DVD’s in the cozy living room, or send the kids upstairs for tv time and adults can visit without interruption.

The house completely remodeled in the fall of 2014. New kitchen and appliances, two new bathrooms, in-floor heating in kitchen and bathrooms! Sleeping for 10 people: 9 sleep comfortably in beds with 1 on the couch. The downstairs has 2 bedrooms (queen bed in one and 1 twin bed plus a queen in the other) with a renovated bathroom. The upstairs is one large room with a queen bed, a sitting area with a futon and a t.v, plus a second full bath.

Kitchen is equipped for easy cooking so just bring your favorite spices, food, and favorite beverages. Crockpot, microwave, roasting pan, and large stock pot makes for creating meals a snap. Other basic pots/pans are also available. Washer/dryer available for your use and detergent is provided.

Why Chuck Gleave chose Christmas Valley

We love the 'in Tahoe but not all the traffic' location of our house. With the house right up against forest land, we love that our backyard is natural and open to nature.

What makes this house unique

10 minute drive and you are on the west beach of the lake without fighting all the downtown traffic! Another benefit, is head the other direction from the house and enjoy the beauty of Hope Valley. You can fish the stream, do hikes. Many people visit the area for the lake but completely miss out on the beauty of the valley.

For the ski buffs, this property is also unique in that it splits the travel time between Heavenly and Kirkwood Ski Resorts.

Really lovely house and quiet neighborhood close to trails

  • 5 of 5

We loved the house - it has been remodeled and has a nice cozy feel to it. Was perfect for our family of three to spread out in and we also really loved the neighborhood, quiet and perfect for our young daughter to roam around. Also great location super close to hiking and mountain biking trails.

Nice cabin with the forest right in the backyard.

  • 5 of 5

Nice, clean, updated cabin with all amenities provided. Many nearby activities like hiking, kayaking, canoeing et. Several restaurants to choose from within a 10 minute drive. Next time we come to Tahoe, we will stay here if available.

Could use some sprucing up

  • 3 of 5

Stayed her for 5 days in July. I will say first that the owner, Chuck, is a class act. We had an unusual problem with the house an he responded promptly and was very thoughtful. So for the owner, 5 stars. The house unfortunately, did not live up to our expectations.

The good first - upstairs master bedroom was quite bright and comfortable. There was a small creek flowing along side the house which was nice to listen to at night. The neighborhood was very friendly and quiet, as well. The next door neighbor has someone living in an RV parked right up to the property's driveway, but we really didn't see them much, so no big deal.

The bad - overall the house is a bit dark and run down. There is a "locker room-esque" smell to the lower level. The couch is pretty well used - we ended up putting a sheet over it like a slip cover. There are also two recliners which are nice. There was one set of sheets for each bed, and 1 worn out bath towel for each person. There is a washer and drier in the garage, but no soap, so had to run out and purchase some. Also was disappointed that the kitchen was missing many of the basic things that you expect from a VRBO house (e.g. no coffee filters, cleaning supplies, paper towels, salt and pepper). Definitely bring your own.

My main disappointment was the outdoor space. There really is no comfortable space to hang out in the yard. We ended up just setting up folding chairs in the driveway. The house could definitely use a deck, covered patio of some sort, or just a flat clear spot to set up some chairs. I usually enjoy barbequing while on vacation, but the BBQ was super filthy and unusable. Also located in a run down, cob web covered overhang behind the kitchen.

I hate to be so critical but I'm just trying to give an honest opinion for other users. With some attention and resources this could be a nice place to stay. Might be better in the winter when you don't plan on using the outdoor space.

Phenomenological...can't wait to come back

  • 5 of 5

We have 5 kids and this house is amazing and has everything one needs and more. The amenities were endless, the kitchen was fully stocked and talk about upgrades. Its very comfortable/cozy and located right next to the national forest so your adventures start there. One thing I loved about this beauty was the detail the owner has by providing laminated notes around the house showing how things work and what needs to be done when finishing up your stay. This is our second stay in South Lake Tahoe and this place exceeded my expectations in every way. The owner gives you recommendations for hikes, restaurants and beach fun. I highly recommend going to Camp Richardson for boat, long boards and paddle boat rentals etc...plus this beach is free and has soft sand unlike other parts of the lake that recommend water shoes, plus you can drink on the beach. The beach charges 10 bucks to park but you can park along the 89 highway for free. For grocery shopping I highly recommend the Grocery Outlet and stay way from Raley's unless you don't mind outrageous prices. Great family fun and can't wait to come back for many years to come...Thank you so much for your hospitality.

Our personal favorites are hiking Horsetail Falls (20 minutes west on Hwy 50) or relaxing at Emerald Bay (25 minutes on west shore of lake). Hope Valley is gorgeous and is total different scenery then what you see by the lake.
