Located on a totally private hilltop in the National Seashore woods, this period 50s architect-designed home is just 5-10 minutes walk on sandy trails from the ocean beach and both Higgins and Gull Ponds.
Year Purchased: 1980
About: We bought this family retreat from the heirs of Edwin O'Connor, the author of 'The Last Harrah' who built the house when his book became a bestseller and a movie with Spencer Tracy. We are from London, England and have come to Wellfleet every summer since then. We now share the house and rent it when none of us are able to use it.
Why Wellfleet, MA, USA:
We loved the house and the incredible privacy of its woods. Plus we knew the architect, Serge Chermayeff, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serge_Chermayeff, a contemporary of Walter Gropius and Eero Saarinen and a professor of architecture at Yale and Harvard. Like other well known architects, Chermayeff was a Wellfleet resident for decades. www.ccmht.org
The Unique Benefits at this Estate:
The house is 'upside down,' with the kitchen, dining and living areas upstairs, and bedrooms and bathrooms downstairs. The upstairs screen porch looking west downhill to the ponds and the woods is our favorite spot. Swimming and kayaking in Higgins or Gull Ponds at the Sluice where they meet is a wonderful experience, and just a 5 minute walk through the woods from the bottom of the drive.
