About Allison Amy

We bought this family retreat from the heirs of Edwin O'Connor, the author of 'The Last Harrah' who built the house when his book became a bestseller and a movie with Spencer Tracy. We are from London, England and have come to Wellfleet every summer since then. We now share the house and rent it when none of us are able to use it.

Allison Amy purchased this estate in 1980

Why Allison Amy chose Cape Cod

We loved the house and the incredible privacy of its woods. Plus we knew the architect, Serge Chermayeff, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serge_Chermayeff, a contemporary of Walter Gropius and Eero Saarinen and a professor of architecture at Yale and Harvard. Like other well known architects, Chermayeff was a Wellfleet resident for decades. www.ccmht.org

What makes this estate unique

The house is 'upside down,' with the kitchen, dining and living areas upstairs, and bedrooms and bathrooms downstairs. The upstairs screen porch looking west downhill to the ponds and the woods is our favorite spot. Swimming and kayaking in Higgins or Gull Ponds at the Sluice where they meet is a wonderful experience, and just a 5 minute walk through the woods from the bottom of the drive.

good house.

  • 4 of 5

very nice house in secluded location. nice seperate studio. very private and beautiful location. kitchen on second floor is vey nice. beautiful architecture. very clean house overall. a couple caveats would be that i had been under the impression that the walk to higgins pond was closer. we wound up learning how to walk to gull pond landing where we left our kayaks for the week. this walk was exactly a half mile from the house. we also learned to walk to the sleuth which connects higgins pond to gull pond and this walk is exactly a half mile from the house. But from the internet description of the house, it mentioned a private landing at higgins pond where we expected to keep our kayaks and we were not able to find this spot, so we were a bit disappointed by this. I had a romantic impression from the internet listing that the house was very close to higgins pond and that there would simply be a short road to higgins pond where we would be able to keep our kayaks on a private spot. After an email from the owners, we wound up putting our kayaks on a private landing beach on higgins pond which mistakenly belonged to someone else who then got very angry with us. This private spot could only be accessed by walking in the pond itself or by walking on someone else's property. I think all of this could be easily corrected by the owners with a map indicating where the correct higgins landing spot is as well as perhaps a more accurate description of how far the sleuth and higgins pond is from the house. The real estate agency that runs the listing is absolutely top notch. super super nice. i have been renting in welfleet for 9 years and they were the nicest real estate people i have ever dealt with. The house is a very special and very beautiful house in a secluded bucolic location. We love gull pond and higgins pond so this house was in a fantastic location. also very close to newcomb hollow ocean beach. Second caveat is that there are some mold issues in the master bedroom. very damp and moldy wood. likely related to water from above porch. was a bit bothersome to us in this room. overall, i would reccomend the house albeit with a couple caveats described above. lastly, the amount of sleeping spots is actually under reported in the listing. we were pleasantly surprised to find a pull out couch in the studio and we didn't know about this ahead of time. perhaps a more accurate description of quarters would improve the listing.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your feedback. The deeded private beach is indeed hard to identify, as the path is overgrown, and we nearly always swim at the Sluice as a result. I've revised the listing accordingly. We completely replaced the roof after a leak earlier this year, but the bedside nightstands were only replaced immediately after you left. Our incredibly capable carpenter built reproductions of them, so thanks for clarifying for me that the originals were the cause of the problem you experienced, and I'm sorry that timing was bad for you. Our carpenter is also checking for and will remediate any residual water damage. Thanks again for all warm words and your feedback, much appreciated!

Secluded, yet walking distance to beach and fresh water pond

  • 5 of 5

We had the great fortune of renting this amazing place and have nothing but positive things to say about about it! There is nothing like finding a place at the Cape where you can get away from it all and still be minutes from everything. The beach and fresh water ponds are about a 5 minute walk and the the hamlet of Wellfleet is 5 minutes by car.

This architecturally significant house is light filled, spacious and beautifully designed. There are several decks to enjoy the outdoors with in complete privacy and a beautiful screened porch on the second floor that has wonderful views.

The open floor is breezy and allows for great entertaining. We always leave feeling like we've had the best vacation ever! I have been going out to the Cape since I was a little kid and have never experienced it in this way.

Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

We love this house. We stayed there for the first time in 2011, and liked it so much that we immediately reserved for 2012. We are looking forward to returning this summer. It's an architecturally unique house in a perfect setting. It is convenient to Newcombs Hollow Beach and Gull Pond, on top of a pretty steep hill. There is a wonderful screened in porch on the top level with peaceful views of the surrounding trees -- it's as if you're in a treehouse. The bedrooms are on the ground level, and both are very comfortable. Upstairs is a spacious kitchen with an eat-in table, a comfortable living room, and a 3rd bedroom, all furnished in mid-century style. There is also a pleasant, secluded, guest cottage. We have wholeheartedly recommended this house to friends, and only wish we could stay longer.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review! So glad you enjoy it as much as we do. We had some landscaping done around the house this spring, including a new grilling area by the noon deck. I hope you like it.
