About Janice or Wayne Trowsdale

We are Janice and Wayne Trowsdale and are both proud to have been born and brought up on Prince Edward Island!

Janice was brought up on the Millar family farm in Bideford, just 1 km down the road from Hilltop Acres. She attended Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown and worked as an Office Secretary, Clerk, and Bookkeeper, retiring in October, 2012.

Wayne was brought up in Borden, where his Dad worked for the CN Railway and his Mom kept boarders. He is a sheet metal worker, school bus driver, carpenter, plumber and handyman - able to turn his hand to almost any task. He retired from his bus drivers job of 36 1/2 years in January, 2009.

Both of us love to welcome visitors to our home and love to share the rich heritage of this area. Both of us sing in the local Community Choir and enjoy music. We have enjoyed travelling around North America, having visited all 10 provinces and 36 of the 50 US states. We have also visited London, England and Norway. We are both Directors on the West Country Historical Society Inc., and volunteer at the Bideford Parsonage Museum, that is just down the road from our home. In 2006, we were recipients of TAIPEI Hospitality Award.

Janice or Wayne Trowsdale purchased this cottage in 2010

Why Janice or Wayne Trowsdale chose Prince Edward Island

We were married in 1963 and were living and working in Charlottetown. One year later, when we were visiting the Millar family farm on the weekend, we learned that the family who lived on this farm had moved to Toronto, and had put the farm up for sale. We came up to check out the house and property and fell in love with everything about it. As Janice's Dad was an active farmer and could always use more good farmland, he agreed to farm the land and so we gave up our jobs in Charlottetown and moved to Bideford. Of course, it was an added bonus that we were now only a short distance from Janice's family home. It is a move that we have never regretted!

What makes this cottage unique

Hilltop Acres was a 75-acre farm, purchased in 1964, where we have made our home and raised our family of three sons. As our boys were growing up, this building (Heidi's Place) was converted from a machine shed into a barn, to house the various animals that were raised here. While it was being constructed, Wayne thought that it had a great view of the river behind it, and that it would make a neat cottage some day. When our family was young, we raised ponies. Heidi was the first foal born on the farm in 1968, when our eldest son was only 1 year old. She was a favourite family pet and she and Wayne had a great understanding of each other. As the boys left home to pursue their own careers, we decided to offer our home to visitors who were looking for accommodations in a Bed and Breakfast. We received our first guests on July 1, 1991. When Heidi died just 1 month short of her 39th birthday in April, 2008, Wayne, who is a handyman and was coming up to retirement from his school bus-driving job, decided that he wanted to renovate the barn into a cottage/guest house. He completely gutted the interior, removed the old concrete floor, and drew plans for a 2-bedroom guest house. Even before the living room and kitchen were completed, family, friends and even guests were sleeping in the bedrooms upstairs. Heidi's Place officially opened in 2010.

Charmante maison

  • 4 of 5

PEI Perfection

  • 5 of 5

Just returned home after an extended weekend on Prince Edward Island and I must say we have found a new favorite spot on the island. We stayed in the Guest House which is a newly converted Pony Barn so everything was super new and clean. The attention to detail as they renovated is impeccable. Even down to the design of the pine board on the walls mimicking the design of old school house walls. An amazing wrap staircase bring you upstairs to the second floor where there are two bedrooms and a 1/2 bath. They have stocked the guest house with just about anything and everything you will need for your stay. If you can't find it, the hosts are more than willing to lend a hand. Wayne graciously gives you a tour about the town and down to the Bideford Parsonage Museum never once making you feel as if you are taking up his valuable time. His wife, Janice also gladly takes guests through the museum (located near to their home) while also always greeting you with a smile, willing to hear about your day and generously offering up homemade muffins in the morning soon after our coffee had perked. We all just adored our stay here - this is definitely on our "favorites" list for PEI now!!!

Our guest house is a renovated pony barn in the side yard of Hilltop Acres Bed & Breakfast and overlooks the scenic Bideford (formerly Goodwood) River.

We are just 600 yds. from the Designated Heritage Bideford Parsonage Museum where famed Canadian author L.M. Montgomery lived during her first year of teaching school. The PEI Shellfish Museum and Green Park Shipbuilding Museum and Historic Yeo House are just minutes away.

Thursday night is Trivia at the Landing Oyster Bar and Pub in Tyne Valley, our neighbouring community. The Tyne Vally Oyster Festival is held each year on the first weekend of August, with delicious Oyster suppers served on Friday afternoon and evening (please check for the exact dates of the Festival). Last summer, the Tyne Valley Tea and Company opened in Tyne Valley with luncheon offerings and local art and crafts for sale.

Next door in Tyne Valley is Dillon's Convenience, where you can purchase pizzas, groceries, rent videos or sit down and have lunch in their cafe. At the rear of the building is a hairdressing shop.

We are just minutes from Green Gable Alpaca Farm where you can see the animals in their paddocks and purchase quality alpaca products in their Gift Shop.

You are also just minutes from the Arlington Orchards, where they host the Shriners Scarecrow Festival in support of Shriners Sick Kids Hospital. This is an annual event held the last Sunday in September. From mid August until mid October, you may pick your own fruit fresh from their trees.

You may watch as local fishers tong for oysters in the waters of the area, and you can purchase oysters fresh from Malpaque Bay at Leslie Hardy & Sons Oyster Grading and Packing plant in East Bideford.

Also, you are within 20 minutes drive to Island Traditions Store where you can watch the workers weaving with wood, to create beautiful baskets of various shapes and sizes for any purpose.

As you can see, there is lots to see and do in this area of our beautiful province!
