About Lisa or Hans

Patricia McArdle Cooper is a native West Virginian who married, moved to south Florida after college (West Virginia Institute of Technology), raised a family, and had two full careers as an educator in Palm Beach County Schools. She longed to rediscover WV and her Irish roots, and after retiring in 2012 from her second career, her dream came true.

She found Pipestem Place, named it Anam Cara Way (Gaelic for “soul friend”), and thus began her third career of fun in “cabin-care” and reconnecting with family and friends in “wild, wonderful” West Virginia.

Lisa or Hans purchased this cabin in 2012

Quaint and clean but no WIFI or land line

  • 3 of 5

We stayed for a long weekend March 23 through the 26th. It was myself, husband, and two young girls. We chose this location because it is close to family that lives in the area.

Pros:

The extra large front porch/deck was perfect for all our family to come visit, sit, and socialize all weekend long.

The interior was clean. Couches were in excellent condition.

Plenty of towels, throw blankets, pillows, etc.

Kitchen was well-stocked with dishes, cookware, utensils, etc.

Cons:

There is no wifi, and our phones wouldn't pick up a signal at all. There is also no landline, which made it impossible to contact our family who lived in the area. We could pick up signal (spotty at best) if we went out into the driveway. wifi or landline is definitely needed in case of emergency.

The hot water heater is set extremely high that hot water from the faucets can quickly burn you.

We had a huge problem with wasps. They appeared to be coming in from both of the large sky windows in the living room and also the skylight over the king bed. We called the owner, who VERY QUICKLY sent someone over with a can of wasp spray (we were out sightseeing) and left the can for us to use as well. However, it will need professional attention to get rid of them. My husband was stung while laying in the bed. We were told by family that this was the first warm day (over 70degrees) of the season, so it may explain why they are coming out. We killed at least 10 of them.

The folding/camping lawn chairs are ripped and not usable, but there was plenty of other outdoor seating available.

Overall, we were impressed with how clean and well-stocked the cabin is. We enjoyed the stay. The location is convenient to area parks, and not far from "town". However, we would only stay there again if there was wifi or a home phone added.

Great little cabin in a super location

  • 5 of 5

Very much enjoyed using "The Robin" at Pipestem Place to catch up with an old friend. The cabin was very easy to find but was sufficiently off of the road where the state route didn't create much noise. There was snow at the time of my rental so I didn't inspect the grounds or use the outside facilities (firepit, grill, meadow) at all. The kitchen was small but well-appointed, was able to make stovetop popcorn and good breakfasts - did take me a few minutes to find the sharp knives (in a short stack of plastic drawers under the sink). Everything was super-clean upon arrival, not a waterspot or a hair to be found anywhere. The hot tub looked nice but we didn't try it. The fireplace was very nice, very substantial, but I had a very hard time lighting a fire. I did buy firewood at the nearby gas station (NEVER bring firewood from home, always buy as close to your destination as possible to mitigate the spread of invasive insects) but it was wet from snow. The cabin was actually stocked with a very nice looking covered stack of wood, but it was all wet from the snow as well. I only brought two newspapers and since there was no kindling to be found (again, the snow) I struggled to build a fire. It almost caught twice but having very little starter made it all a waste of time. Luckily there is ample heat from the electric furnace. The water heater and water pressure were both very good. The bedding was nice, clean, crisp, without being overly scented like you sometimes find with detergents and dryer sheets, etc. Good lighting throughout. There were several books and they were very interesting and thoughtful. Neither turned on the tv nor tried the entertainment equipment.

A cozy get away, good for old friends catching up or I can see how it would be very nice for a romantic getaway. Easy to find, reasonably priced, well cleaned and well stocked. I can see coming back here if the occasion arises again.

Lovely cabin

  • 5 of 5

We spent the week between Christmas and New Years here and it was great. We came as a family with a teen and almost teen so the set up of the cabin was good for us. Very clean and well stocked with things you would need while staying. The grounds are very pretty and it sits off the road quite a bit so it is quiet. We had one minor issue with a leak while we were there, but it was dealt with very quickly and didn't impact our stay at all. We would absolutely stay here again!

The Robin was a delightful cozy and comfy place to stay near Pipestem State Park in WV.

  • 5 of 5

The cabin is small, but quite comfortable for a small family. The grounds are beautiful and private, yet close to many things to do such as hiking and horseback riding. There are several scenic waterfalls in the area to explore. We especially enjoyed campfires, the fireplace and the jacuzzi bathtub. A relaxing country get - away nestled within the beauty of all nature's blessings!

The cabin was perfect for the four of us. The beds and living room furniture were comfortable and cozy. The property is beautiful and close to outdoor activities such as fishing, hiking, horseback riding, paddle boats, swimming, boating, etc.. We were extremely impressed with how clean and well equipped the cabin was for our perfect getaway. We plan to return in the future and highly recommend this place.
