What makes this House unique
This private property has two homes. Perfect for retreats, special events or landmark holidays. The separate cottage originally was one of the main boat building sites on Tomales Bay. 5-star location, 2-star cleanliness
Stunning views, comfy beds, great hot tub, and perfect location. However, the house was not as clean as would be expected. When we arrived, the bathroom had dirty mirrors and hair on the toilet. We also found a container of ramen in the kitchen island that had gone bad and burst, leaking fluid into the shelf that we had to clean up before putting our stuff away. There was grime and fingerprints all over the fronts of the fridge, dishwasher, and light switches, indicating that not all surfaces had been cleaned and sanitized. Also, the dishwasher frame was broken, so when you pulled out the racks the whole machine would tip out from the cabinet.
By the second evening, we discovered mouse droppings in the skillets and pots that are stored in an open cabinet next to the oven. There were also mouse droppings in the boathouse kitchen and bathroom. According to the Center for Disease Control, contact with dried droppings and urine from house mice can transmit 4 infectious diseases: lymphocytic choriomeningitis, salmonellosis, leptospirosis, and Streptobacillus moniliformis. These are all serious infections that make people very sick. We took photos and opened a formal complaint with Vrbo about this.
We notified Dana about the mouse droppings and she said that there had been a mouse in the house before we rented it and that she killed it. She also said that’s why the dishwasher was loose, because they had to move it to seal a hole. None if this was communicated beforehand. If we knew about this, we would have canceled the reservation. She tried to defend the conditions by saying the droppings won’t make people sick, which is not true, and that mice are normal in a country house, which is completely unacceptable. Our family owns two cabins in the mountains and a ranch in Northern California, and we have no mice or rats at these locations. It’s a simple matter of keeping your home sealed and preemptive pest control services, and keeping all food and trash bins sealed and stored in cabinets.
For the price per night, the house should be spotless, all appliances in proper condition, and your renters should not have to deal with mice droppings. Very disappointing.
My home is EXTREMELY clean. I do not eat ramen and do not have "grime" anywhere in my home. and the day before the renters arrived I heard a mouse, hired an exterminator and was told the tiny mouse had been captured. Perhaps there were a few droppings, for which I apologize but I live in the country, there are mice, mountain lions, otters, eagles, ravens, fox, coyote... if you want a country experience that is unique and beautiful my home is appropriate for you.
But, if you don't want to pay the price and want to create a bad review to get money back please, please do not rent my spectacular home.
When I got a call 10 minutes after they left and they wanted a refund I was taken aback, why not call the second they arrived to say something was wrong? I would have sent the exterminator back or cleaners, anything to make the experience perfect. But the "news" of the filth, mouse and rotten ramen came after 3 days at my home...
Sorry, just not true....
Can’t wait to return! Amazing place, owner has a beautifully furnished and well stocked home. It was hard to leave !! Paradise!!
Beautiful vacation home by the Bay!
The house is beautiful with lots of room for family and friends. The location can't be beat!
Wonderful furnishings, tremendous character. Hot tub a little slow to fire up. Not enough plates for 12 but kitchen otherwise well stocked. No laundry (as advertised). Arguably tight for 6 adults w 6 kids comfortably. Some kids on big wide couches and one adult took the teepee —but that has a firm twin bed so no big deal. Three closed bedrooms. Five beds including loft bed inside BR #3. Great time.
Epic Bayside Hippie Commune
This was one of the best houses I have ever stayed in. I rented it for my bday, as the listing explicitly says, "Parties/events allowed". It had great decor and a beautiful view. There was plenty of sleeping space and the tub, teepee, peace barn, and dock were so fun. We even jammed in the barn.
The only problem was at the end of our stay. Dana agreed to a check-out of 1pm. However, a group of cleaners showed up at 10:45am (15 minutes before our original checkout). This caused chaos as they started cleaning while we were still cooking, dressing, and trying to clean up and organize. One even walked in on someone using the restroom. This was disturbing, so we did our best to tidy up, pick up trash and clean plates/utensils, and headed out. We assumed the cleaners would finish putting furniture back and clean since they were there and we paid them $200.
Later, Dana sent a message to me that was not well taken. I had 12 people stay at the house, and had 6 cars total. However, Dana relied on the hearsay of her cleaners, who were obviously irritated at her miscommunications with them, and accused me of having "way more than 11 people" and "NINE" cars, which is grossly inaccurate. The home sleeps 11-14 people as shown in her pictures, so I don't think 12 people put a "burden" on her home.
Regarding cars, the posting said there were 4 cars allowed "so neighbors can access their property". I checked with the neighbors (I've rented from them before and got a 5 star VRBO review) and found it empty, so did not think 6 cars was an issue. Besides, we weren't blocking access. However, in her message, Dana disclosed she could "lose [her] license" with over 4 cars, which was NOT what her posting said.
She also accused us of eating her food. I found it odd there was food in the fridge, as I brought $750 worth of groceries and needed space for it. If any of hers was eaten, it was an accident as my guests would not have known hers from mine.
She also accused us of using her clothing. The only thing I can think of was a basket of hats. If Dana does not want guests using items, she should lock them in a closet or the storage below her home.
Finally, Dana accused us of smoking and a broken succulent. A few people did smoke outside, and would have picked up better but for the cleaners showing up. No idea about the succulent.
Dana should update her listing and adjust her standards for renting a large party home, or not rent it out at all.
Just over an hour from San Francisco, yet like visiting another country. Private, yet lots to do. A foodie farm-to-table mecca, with oysters, grass fed beef, organic farms, Cow Girl Creamery, Wineries, Brick Maiden Bakery. Great restaurants or private meals with the farmers. Kayaking, paddle boarding, sailing, trail running, hiking, horseback riding, biking or just be lazy. Blissful.
Less than an hour to the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Bodega Bay.
