Lovely adobe nestled under the Cottonwoods in Albuquerque

  • 5 of 5

After a major flood in our home in Albuquerque, we had to move out for 3 weeks and found this delightful adobe. It was very close to our home and although we were not on vacation - work and school were in full gear - it still felt like a vacation. The house sits at the end of a long drive and is bordered by open space. Coyotes howl at night, hawks swoop above the open fields, and at sunset there is a spectacular view of the Sandia Mountains as they change color to watermelon pink. There are trails for biking or walking. A tiny wooded gate is your private access to the open space. Quiet and spacious, the classic old adobe compound house has slate floors, huge vigas in the ceiling, lovely rugs, a large wood harvest table for family meals, and very comfortable beds. Secluded, yes, but 10 minutes to downtown Albuquerque. The sky seemed bigger and the stars at night brighter - it is a magical place. A delightful home from which to explore Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and New Mexico.

Casa at Los Poblanos

  • 4 of 5

A beautiful property adjacent to Los Poblanos Open area. It is nice having the key to the gate to enter the open space area. We enjoyed our stay. We used the dishwasher but the carriage was loose. We would prefer to have cloth dishtowels in the kitchen rather than relying exclusively on paper towels.

Pleasant stay.

  • 4 of 5

Secluded which is fine with us. Everything was clean and well stocked with paper goods. We didn’t cook but I’m sure you’d find what you need if you do. This is an old New Mexico home with the charm that goes along with it which is exactly the originality we like when we are in a different area. Owner answered any questions we had very quickly. She was also very quick to get our deposit returned. Would likely return. Thank you Margot.

PS: the roosters next door do get up early

The Last Beautiful Days of Autumn in Albuquerque

  • 4 of 5

The owner advised that we were probably arriving too late for the fall colors, but she was incorrect. They were fabulous. We were treated to a glorious display of bright yellow cottonwoods in and around the property as well as all along the Rio Grande. We very much enjoyed our time in Albuquerque and our stay at this interesting house for several reasons.

Being outdoors oriented this was perfectly located for easy access to several walking trails that followed farmers’ ditches and it was within walking distance of a nice grocery and liquor store (good beer selection). On our first morning, as well as every morning of our nine-day stay, we enjoyed watching the comings and goings of large flocks of Sand Hill Cranes in the open space adjacent to the house. We had quick access to the open space through a locked gate, which made exercising our two Labradors easy.

The house is older, in the New Mexican traditional style, with flagstone and brick floors. It has an open floor plan and the size was perfect for the two of us and our two dogs. Both of us enjoy cooking, using local foods, and the kitchen made that enjoyable. We did bring a lot of our own cooking tools and seasonings. The lack of television offered quiet time for reading and enjoying the night sky. What we (the dogs) really appreciated was the huge fenced yard with logs (for leaping over) and beaten paths along the fence (for investigations). I’m fairly certain the dogs wanted to stay forever.

We didn’t expect the 5 a.m. serenade by the pair of roosters in the house next door, but roosters, horses, and goats seem to be commonplace in this part of Albuquerque. They added flavor to the experience. I personally could have done without the spiders, of which there were quite a few – especially in the shower.

If we return to Albuquerque, and we probably will, we will attempt to reserve this house for our stay.

Owner's Response: I apologize for the spiders - they are seasonal. The house was empty a bit before you came - though cleaned throughly. I'll make a note of it. M. Beattie

Beautiful in town property

  • 5 of 5

We loved this property! The home is located in a great part of Albuquerque, north valley. You are close to everything, and the property has direct access to an open space area. We loved walking our little dog on the open space trail twice a day and riding our bicycles onto the many other Interconnecting Albuquerque trails. We were there during balloon fiesta, and we could watch balloons from the yard! The yard is large enough that we set up a disc golf course and played a few rounds every day. The house is old, but it was spotlessly clean. You could walk on the floors in bare feet and not feel any dirt. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you will need for cooking including a crockpot, and all appliances work well. Bring your own spices. There is a washer and dryer. The beds are very comfortable. Bring earplugs for sleeping if you are not an early riser - there is a rooster next door - otherwise, enjoy the beautiful early morning! The internet connection is fast enough to watch movies on your devices. Smith’s grocery store is less than a mile away. Dion’s has good pizza. Try Hannah & Nate’s either on Riverside or in Corrales, both close to the house - great breakfast and lunch and cranberry bread pudding. Red Rock Coffee Roasters sells direct to the public and is about 10 minutes from the house. And, finally, the rate for this property makes it such a bargain! Thank you Margot for sharing your home.

About Margot T Beattie

I am a psychoanalyst living and practicing in San Francisco, CA. I raised my children in New Mexico and have loved the southwest ever since.

Margot T Beattie purchased this house in 2005

Why Margot T Beattie chose Los Poblanos

I need to feed my soul with some access to the magic of New Mexico. The woman who sold this house to me did so because my grandparents settled in New Mexico before it became a state in 1912.

What makes this house unique

This is a very unique property. It is in town, at the end of a street - no cars - no traffic. Near Old Town, museums, restaurants, Betty's massage, 1 hour from Santa Fe, and is incredibly quiet and peaceful. Evenings and mornings are especially beautiful.
