Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Dawn, I couldn't find a spot on the VRBO link to enter a review so I shall just enter here.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Sea Turtle. We arrived late at night after a long travel day and fell into the WONDERFUL bed without knowing what to expect in the morning. It rained all night--that glorious jungle rain. Imagine our delight to wake up to bird calls and the spectacular view of the mountains embellished with our first of many rainbows. We appreciated the zen-like simplicity of the Sea Turtle's hexagonal structure, the peace of the jungle, the joy of showering under the waterfall showerhead while viewing the mountains and jungle wilds, and the glory of breakfast on the lanai.

Although I would have appreciated some standard amenities like towel bars to hang up wet towels, a robe hook, and an attached soap dish in the shower, we had everything we needed. The location was beautiful and convenient to Hanalei, ( 10-15 minutes by car) and the west end beaches,. The short jaunt to the Bay Colony Coffee shop was also a treat.

Thank you for creating such a delightful retreat for us.

** you made a brilliant investment in the bed! We usually have back pain when we sleep in hotel beds, Mike wants me to ask you the brand name and model of the mattress and springs. **

Very charming cottage!

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I stayed here in early November for a week. The property manager was very accomodating about our arrival time, allowing us to have access a few hours ahead of schedule since the cleaning was finished. The cottage was very sweetly appointed, with cute bedding and decor throughout. We really enjoyed the outdoor shower and patio, though we HAD to use the provided citronella candle and quite a bit of bug spray to fend off the mosquitos. (Not a complaint so much as a warning for any future guests: DON'T forget your bug spray!) The provided beach stuff was in good repair and plentiful.

The only things that I would classify as MINOR complaints are as follows:

1. The rental listed a stove as one of the kitchen amenities. It sat unusable in the entryway when we arrived. I was a bit disappointed as I was planning on cooking most of our meals at home, and we ended up having to eat out more than expected. There is a hot plate and microwave inside, which I used to cook breakfasts at least.

2. The cottage is positioned across a driveway from the main house. We could hear pretty much everything going on out there and, I assume, other visitors could hear us. One night, several other guests arrived late at night and pulled the whole "slamming doors and speaking at full volume or above" routine. It's just really not as secluded as maybe we had expected.

Another night, what seemed like six or seven cats simultaneously went into heat or something. Imagine the creepiest yowling noises a cat could make, multiply that by six or so cats, and add a spooky jungle echo effect. Every other night, we slept great though: the mattress in the cottage was very comfortable.

All in all, the Sea Turtle Cottage was a very cute, affordable place to stay. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The cottage's kitchen amenities were less than described, which was disappointing but we made it work. We would stay again based on our experiences here, and would generally recommend it to anyone who was considering it.

A real jungle experience

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay in this jungle cottage. It was secluded, private and had lovely views. There is a real bird symphony each morning. We found the property clean and well equipped with everything we needed. The outdoor shower is a real experience. Because of the secluded location there really isn't much within walking distance. We didn't mind trading a bit of extra driving time for a relaxing and quiet location. So, if you're looking to be somewhere with walkable beach property or restaurants, you will not like this property. It was about a 5 minute drive to Hanalei town center. It is much closer to some of the lovelier beaches (tunnels, Ke'e) on the North shore than staying in town. We would definitely stay again.

Exotic jungle sanctuary

  • 5 of 5

I travel to Kauai a couple times a year and this is one of my favorite spots so far. It's secluded but close to Hanalei, nicely furnished, and surrounded by a lush jungle property. It's a magical place. The sea turtle overlooked the jungle valley, was cozy and clean, and I just felt well taken care of a guest overall. I don't usually write reviews but I just wanted to express my thanks for a great vacation. I can't wait to come back.

So romantically perfect!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at the Sea Turtle Cottage for our honeymoon and found it absolutely lovely and perfect for all our needs and desires. The kitchen was great for cooking meals, the flat screen was fun for watching movies, the king bed surrounded by windows of Kauai jungle is breathtaking, and the outdoor shower is super romantic. Located in Hanalei, the cottage is perfectly situated for exploring nearby hiking on the coast as well as beaches where you can swim or snorkel. Dawn, the owner, was responsive to all our needs while we were there and very easy to work with in all ways. We hope to return sooner than later!

Just an OK experience

  • 2 of 5

My fiancé and I stayed here for 3 nights in August, and this wasn't quite the experience we thought it would be. The location is good, about 10 minutes drive from Hanalei and while it is quaint, you get what you pay for. I would have given it 3 stars, because of the location, the kitchen was stocked and there were plenty of towels, snorkel gear, etc, but on the 4th night we noticed bugs in the bed. Since we weren't sure they weren't bed bugs, we didn't feel comfortable staying the last night of our reservation.

Owner's Response: Natalie emailed us to say they had left in the middle of the night on their last night. We went over the cottage carefully but couldn't find any bugs. Just to be sure we then had the pest control come in and check the cottage out very thoroughly but they couldn't find any bugs either. They 100% ruled out bed bugs. They suggested we just let guests know that if you leave a door open for awhile, especailly at night, you can attract bugs in temporarily, We do have screens on all the windows and the door has a sliding screen as well so we encourgage guests to be careful to assure it is closed especially at night when the lights can attract. We also encourage our guests to let us know if there are any issues during their stay. If you have never been to the tropics or are concerned that you may encounter bugs you may not have seen before, please feel free to check in with us as to what you might expect. I've actually found that we have very few insect issues at our cottage.

Quaint- Could use a deep cleaning

  • 3 of 5

Okay. I have mixed feelings about this place. I clearly needs some TLC. There were a few light bulbs missing and the light fixtures were very dirty. The screen door often came off it hinges and there was a hole in the screen. One night the hot water ran out. My husband knew to take the propane take off the BBQ so we could take hot showers. It was like our 2nd day there, tanks should have been full on arrival. Also- our last night there guests from the other rental on the property were making dinner on their lanai around 900. It was a little noisy and the light from their lanai shown right in our windows.

But on the other hand- it's affordable (you get what you pay for), well stocked (towels, snorkel gear, coolers, bikes) and the location is pretty sweet. The bed is super comfortable. And the ambience of being in a cottage way up in the trees feels a bit like a tree house.

I think with a deep cleaning I would rate this place a 4. But it was just a little too dusty/cobwebby for my taste.

Owner's Response: We were a bit confused with this review as this couple had expressed personally to us how much they loved the cottage. My housekeeper was distraught as she is very meticulous. We went over the cottage carefully to see if there were cobwebs inside but couldn't find any so we wondered if the guest had stayed at more than one place and confused us with somewhere else. As well all the lights were working okay. The cottage is surrounded by the jungle and there is a small garden with a water fountain at the entrance of the cottage. There were a couple of spider webs on the plants by the water fountain so they may have been referring to these . We did see that they had accidently pushed on the screen door instead of sliding it so it had come off of its rails and this had caused the screen to come away, in one spot, from the door handle. We put in a new screen rather than try to mend it ( and used the mended one for my own place, ) They had changed the propane tank themselves and notified me after the fact, but when I checked later that day, the one in place was actually still okay. We use on demand propane hot water heaters so they take about 20 seconds more to heat up than the electric ones. Sometimes it can be confusing to guests and they can think it is not getting hot fast enough . We leave a note in the guest book about this to help that issue and I ( or my housekeeper) try to meet up with everyone when they arrive so as it go over any details such as this. We love our guests and our goal is to make the perfect vacation. You can report any issues to us during your stay and we will be " on it". .with aloha!
