About visitbandon.com

When I was working in the city of Chicago I dreamed of one day having a place on the beach in Oregon. To me, Oregon was defined by the Pacific and its rugged rocky coast. When it comes to the Oregon coast, there is no more beautiful place to enjoy it than in Bandon-By-The-Sea.

visitbandon.com purchased this bungalow in 2004

Why visitbandon.com chose Southern Coast

Bandon by far has the most beautiful rock formations in Oregon. This property is in 'Sunset City' just a half mile south of town and offers all that Bandon has to offer with a bit more privacy.

What makes this bungalow unique

You will not find a better (or closer) oceanfront property with a bluff vantage point. Each time I step onto the deck it is still magical. Built before the days of imposed setbacks, so you have the best front row seat.

There is no beating this cottage's location, directly on a gorgeous uncrowded stretch of beach with big rocks to add interest. Open plan of living/dining area, vaulted ceiling, many windows on the ocean, and the large deck are also pluses. Well equipped and very clean. Good for couples and small families. But there are some things you should know. First is the stairs-to-the-beach situation. In one of the pictures you can see a staircase to the left of the deck. My guess is this cottage used to share those stairs but something happened. There's a chain across them and a no trespassing sign. Unfortunately, the owners of this cottage chose to solve the problem on the cheap, by installing 7 or 8 platforms part-way down to the beach. Small children, seniors and anyone with a mobility issue will have trouble with these. Rather than the normal 7" stair riser (it's standard for a reason!) these platforms are much higher -- as much as 22". Also, when you finish the platforms, you are still a steep slide down to the beach. They really should put up a picture of these. I have an artificial knee and I'm afraid this will be a deal-breaker for me as far as returning. Otherwise we'd love to, and we can easily put up with the house's other eccentricities -- the tiny bedroom whose walls don't reach the ceiling, the painted plywood walls and other signs of a cheap remodel, the lack of an oven, the outside laundry room, the two-mattresses-on-the-floor loft (which we didn't use anyway), the lack of shades on the many windows (which can make it tough when the sun comes in in the late afternoon). As long as you know these things and can deal with the stairs-to-the-beach situation, this is a great place. I've been to beaches in Maine, Cape Cod, Florida, California and Hawaii, and this is one of the prettiest I've ever seen.

Owner's Response: First, I’d like to thank you for the complimentary and well thought out review! I am aware of all the issues you mention and I’d like to address them. First is the access to the beach issue. Yes, there is a beautiful stairway 10 ft from the property that we had access to through a written paid agreement with the owner next door. For some reason, earlier this season the owner’s attorney said that he should no longer allow our guests to use these and they were chained off. Having a fairly fully scheduled summer season and guests needing beach access something had to be done. The cheapest estimate for putting in stairs was $17,000.00 (I KNOW!!), so we chose the platform method, which although far from adequate, at least does allow a way down in most cases for the scheduled guests. The plans are for a stairway down to the beach in the future (although 2 sets of stairs, side by side is just plain stupid!). When I do build stairs, anyone will be welcome to use them. You are right, the listing needs to be modified with the stair picture taken out. It was a great photo, but now unfortunately is no longer accurate. As far as the cottage itself, there are plans to finish closing off the bedroom and certainly more shades can be added. I’ve wanted to avoid adding any on the Pacific side to not interfere in any way with the view, but that still may not be a bad idea. The mattresses in the loft are intended only for kids. They love it, but I wouldn’t wish that sleeping situation on ANY adult ;). Once again, thank you for the very nice review. Constructive comments like yours allow us to make changes to improve the experience of our future guests, which is very important. I hope that we can soon make some changes that would accommodate your needs allowing you to return for another stay at some point in the future. Charles

Dream Trip

  • 5 of 5

We have lived in Oregon for nearly 14 years but this was our first time to the Southern Oregon coast. It was a really long drive for just a weekend, but Bandon was so worth it! The Seaside Bungalow was perfect for us. The location is a dream. We hope to come back for a much longer stay next time.

Owner's Response: As far as the Oregon coast is concerned, you picked the right spot for your first visit. You cannot beat Bandon.

Amazing views

  • 5 of 5

Thank you for sharing this incredible scenery. Alex and I kept joking about never having seen a real “Nor-easter” despite the 40ish mph gale force winds coming from apparently the southwest. I think your neighbors lost a couple of shingles! If you are ever tempted to leave your sandals on the porch when it looks like a washing machine out there, think again. Adiou, adieu footwear………

Our dog, Madison, was in heaven, and we kept trying to explain to her that it’s very rare to see such a spectacular sunset, fall asleep, and then wake to see the moon shining in the window over the water. We were so entranced by the rock formations, and she, by misjudging the depth of the tidal pools and her capacity to drink seawater. All in all, we came back from the beach tired and wow-ed every time.

Hope to be back! Thanks again!

Owner's Response: I'm glad you had a great time. I worry when the weather isn't perfectly sunny, but then, it is the Oregon coast. And, as you mentioned, the storms are VERY dramatic. I remember one night spent there during a winter storm when wind speeds were between 40-60 mph. I could swear I was in God's own vacuum cleaner. Dramatic is an understatement! I hope to see you back some day. Charles

Almost perfect!

Left on 10/28/2013 for a stay in October 2013

I hate to write a glowing review, as I don't want this little treasure to become too popular.

The good;

Very clean, minimalist but nicely decorated, location, view, everything is as it appears in the photos. My 12 yo Daughter loved the loft. One of the most interesting beaches I've ever been to and I grew up going to beaches in Ca, besides being on beaches in the Caribbean, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Washington & Oregon. Found very good basic breakfast at the cafe at the end of 2nd St, lots of choices. Enjoyed the farmers market especially Chubby Girl Cheesecake! Yum!

We were fortunate to enjoy sunny weather with lighting that produced some wonderful photos, only about 550!

The Bad;

Nothing that would discourage me from returning, but...

It could really use a privacy curtain of some kind for the window at the dinning area as that area is also where people come and go between the bathroom, bedroom, and loft. And, the kitchen window, of the quite close house next door, looks directly into that window. Next time I go I will bring a sheet and pushpins to provide that privacy.

Although I slept quite well the bed in the bedroom is a double, so might not work really well for big or tall people, fortunately I do not fall into either category. Had read that someone was not happy with the bed linens, but I didn't find it to be a problem. They feel thin, but are also very soft.

It is stated that it sleeps 6, but 2 of the 6 should probably be teens or younger sleeping on futons in the loft where you cannot stand up unless you are shorter than 4 feet tall. But, again, my 12 yo loved living up there, so it had to be a pretty good space!

The kitchen could use some specifically microwaveable bowls for cooking, since there is no real oven, just a toaster oven.

It would also be nice to have a light over the dining table, the loft and the laundry. Lighting is minimal. Also, someone should do something about the wiring in the laundry area, appears to be unsafe.

Bottom line;

Yeah, there are a few things I would change, but nothing that would prevent me and my family from retuning for a longer stay, probably next spring.

For the price, I don't think you can beat it!

Owner's Response: I'm so glad you had a great time. I still think it's one of the best views in all of Bandon. As per your recommendations, curtains have been installed on the south windows. Some people have suggested curtains or blinds on the west side, but I have so much trouble with blocking the ocean view this may or may not happen. We will be upgrading the mattress to a queen this season and usually more than one set of linens is available. We will be installing more lighting and additional cooking items have been added to the kitchen. Regarding the wiring in the utility area, it was installed by a certified electrician with an upgraded circuit breaker box. It is a shed and may look odd, but it is safe. Regardless, I'll have another look. I may have missed a few things in this note, but we are striving to address all of the things you mentioned. We look forward to seeing you next season. Chuck

Felt like home

August 15, 2012

We had a lovely time. The house felt warm and comfortable. We especially loved the view and easy access to the ocean. We’ve been many places around the world, each time, a different kind of fun……………..but this area felt like home.
