When I was working in the city of Chicago I dreamed of one day having a place on the beach in Oregon. To me, Oregon was defined by the Pacific and its rugged rocky coast. When it comes to the Oregon coast, there is no more beautiful place to enjoy it than in Bandon-By-The-Sea.
visitbandon.com purchased this Bungalow in 2004
Why visitbandon.com chose Bandon
Bandon by far has the most beautiful rock formations in Oregon. This property is in 'Sunset City' just a half mile south of town and offers all that Bandon has to offer with a bit more privacy.
What makes this Bungalow unique
You will not find a better (or closer) oceanfront property with a bluff vantage point. Each time I step onto the deck it is still magical. Built before the days of imposed setbacks, so you have the best front row seat.

Great views, not much else.
Ok, if you rent this place, you'll be thrilled with the view from the living room and porch. Unbelievable. The beach is just spectacular here. Other than that, prepare to be rather disappointed. The kitchen is not only lacking a dishwasher, it lacks an oven. Hard to cook with no oven!!!
Also, the beds are super uncomfortable, and the pillows might as well not be there. Bring your own... The bathroom is Tony and yucky, with a shower head too low for anyone near 6'.
We'll stay elsewhere next time.
Beautiful view and cozy home!
I had a wonderful time staying at this cozy house! My husband and I went together and took our dog with us, and it was perfect! The view was spectacular and it's just a short walk down a path to the beach. It's only a few minutes from town, so going out to dinner was easy. The house itself is warm and inviting, with bright colors, cute furniture and lots of windows. The porch gives you a perfect view of the ocean, and we really enjoyed sitting out there with a cup of tea, watching the sun set over the Pacific Ocean. The bed in the bedroom is very comfortable, and there is a loft that's perfect if you have kids. Overall, a completely wonderful vacation! We will definitely be coming back!
Location, Location, Location
There is no beating this cottage's location, directly on a gorgeous uncrowded stretch of beach with big rocks to add interest. Open plan of living/dining area, vaulted ceiling, many windows on the ocean, and the large deck are also pluses. Well equipped and very clean. Good for couples and small families. But there are some things you should know. First is the stairs-to-the-beach situation. In one of the pictures you can see a staircase to the left of the deck. My guess is this cottage used to share those stairs but something happened. There's a chain across them and a no trespassing sign. Unfortunately, the owners of this cottage chose to solve the problem on the cheap, by installing 7 or 8 platforms part-way down to the beach. Small children, seniors and anyone with a mobility issue will have trouble with these. Rather than the normal 7" stair riser (it's standard for a reason!) these platforms are much higher -- as much as 22". Also, when you finish the platforms, you are still a steep slide down to the beach. They really should put up a picture of these. I have an artificial knee and I'm afraid this will be a deal-breaker for me as far as returning. Otherwise we'd love to, and we can easily put up with the house's other eccentricities -- the tiny bedroom whose walls don't reach the ceiling, the painted plywood walls and other signs of a cheap remodel, the lack of an oven, the outside laundry room, the two-mattresses-on-the-floor loft (which we didn't use anyway), the lack of shades on the many windows (which can make it tough when the sun comes in in the late afternoon). As long as you know these things and can deal with the stairs-to-the-beach situation, this is a great place. I've been to beaches in Maine, Cape Cod, Florida, California and Hawaii, and this is one of the prettiest I've ever seen.
First, I’d like to thank you for the complimentary and well thought out review! I am aware of all the issues you mention and I’d like to address them.
First is the access to the beach issue. Yes, there is a beautiful stairway 10 ft from the property that we had access to through a written paid agreement with the owner next door. For some reason, earlier this season the owner’s attorney said that he should no longer allow our guests to use these and they were chained off. Having a fairly fully scheduled summer season and guests needing beach access something had to be done. The cheapest estimate for putting in stairs was $17,000.00 (I KNOW!!), so we chose the platform method, which although far from adequate, at least does allow a way down in most cases for the scheduled guests. The plans are for a stairway down to the beach in the future (although 2 sets of stairs, side by side is just plain stupid!). When I do build stairs, anyone will be welcome to use them. You are right, the listing needs to be modified with the stair picture taken out. It was a great photo, but now unfortunately is no longer accurate.
As far as the cottage itself, there are plans to finish closing off the bedroom and certainly more shades can be added. I’ve wanted to avoid adding any on the Pacific side to not interfere in any way with the view, but that still may not be a bad idea. The mattresses in the loft are intended only for kids. They love it, but I wouldn’t wish that sleeping situation on ANY adult ;).
Once again, thank you for the very nice review. Constructive comments like yours allow us to make changes to improve the experience of our future guests, which is very important. I hope that we can soon make some changes that would accommodate your needs allowing you to return for another stay at some point in the future.
Thank you for sharing this incredible scenery. John and I kept joking about never having seen a real “Nor-easter” despite the 40ish mph gale force winds coming from apparently the southwest. I think your neighbors lost a couple of shingles! If you are ever tempted to leave your sandals on the porch when it looks like a washing machine out there, think again. Adiou, adieu footwear………
Our dog, Madison, was in heaven, and we kept trying to explain to her that it’s very rare to see such a speclacular sunset, fall asleep, and then wake to see the moon shining in the window over the water. We were so entranced by the rock formations, and she, by misjudging the depth of the tidal pools and her capacity to drink seawater. All in all, we came back from the beach tired and wow-ed every time.
Hope to be back! Thanks again!

I'm glad you had a great time. I worry when the weather isn't perfectly sunny, but then, it is the Oregon coast. And, as you mentioned, the storms are VERY dramatic. I remember one night spent there during a winter storm when wind speeds were between 40-60 mph. I could swear I was in God's own vacuum cleaner. Dramatic is an understatement!
I hope to see you back some day.
We have lived in Oregon for nearly 14 years but this was our first time to the Southern Oregon coast. It was a really long drive for just a weekend, but Bandon was so worth it! The Seaside Bungalow was perfect for us. The location is a dream. We hope to come back for a much longer stay next time.
As far as the Oregon coast is concerned, you picked the right spot for your first visit. You cannot beat Bandon.

Uh, I think you already posted this review. Perhaps you thought you were listing this on another site? Thanks for the nice comments. Confused.......
The 'Seaside Bungalow' is the quintessential oceanfront cottage, with unsurpassed views of the Pacific. It is a perfect place to spend a week, if just unwinding (while enjoying all that this ocean and the town of Bandon have to offer), or while playing the Bandon Dunes courses.
