Wonderful house, amazing views, definitely recommend!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this rental for a 3 night stay. The house was wonderful and the view of Mt. Hood was incredible. The house was very spacious with 2 large bedrooms downstairs and a large living room with a full futon. The kitchen and little dining room were perfect for our needs. The best part for me was the deck which overlooked the mountains and in particular Mt. Hood. The location to downtown Hood River was perfect. We loved our stay in Hood River, 5 min drive to the river and awesome beaches and lots of yummy restaurant choices. Dave was an incredible host and left me a list of fun places, restaurants, and events, like rafting!, to try. I highly recommend staying at his place and will definitely be going back again!

Dirtiest Place I Have Ever Stayed At

  • 1 of 5

This was truly the dirtiest place I have ever stayed at. If it were a hotel the health dept. would close it. The kitchen cabinets inside and out had not been cleaned in years. There were things in the bottom of the drawers that could have been anything. He left the condiments in the frig, but more than 20 items had passed the expiration date. There was an eggnog creamer from Xmas that was solid mold. We threw all of these out. If you walked barefooted, which I only did once, your feet were black in minutes. There was no access to the backyard from the house, so we could not go clean up the used food containers that were thrown back there. The bathrooms were just as bad as the kitchen. This place needs a professional house cleaning crew to come and spend several days there. The beds were at least 20 years old and did not have mattress pads on them. When you sat on the master bed you could hear the broken springs in side the mattress. The hot water heater was broken. You could only get hot water for less than 2 minutes. Cold showers are not a lot of fun. There were lots of things that were not true in his description of this house. He says there is HDTV with Satellite or Cable. The TV is hooked up to some cardboard antenna that is attached to the wall behind it. You can't get HDTV from that antenna. There was a note next to the TV "Sorry the last people here broke the antenna. Hope you can fix it." We couldn't. If 2 DVDs is lots, then he has lots of them. There were no instructions for anything including the Stereo, so we couldn't figure out how to use it either. The couch was so uncomfortable you couldn't sit on it to watch TV anyway and I certainly wouldn't sit on the floor as dirty as it was. He shows 4 dining room chairs, but there are only 3, not that I would ever eat a meal in that house. Not only did he have the nerve to charge us a cleaning fee, but he never returned our security deposit. When I called and texted him, his replies were rude and untruthful. I would not stay here again if it was free. I can not believe any of the positive reviews were written by people who actually stayed in the same place I did.

Owner's Response: For 2017 I have hired a professional cleaner who will clean prior to every new arrival. I am sorry that this guest was not happy with his time at my house - rarely do people spend time inside my home - most are there to enjoy the wonderful things to do and scenery in the nearby gorge. I learned a good lesson here - prepare for both types of guests needs and expectations which are quite different. I feel bad that this group spent so much time unhappy indoors and that Joel thanked me and forgot that I immediately took care of the hot water for my guests - which only needed a small adjustment which I promptly covered and did not charge the cleaning deposit, I promptly mailed him multiple checks to cover his complaint

Very disappointing

  • 1 of 5

There are a few amenities that every rental house should have and this house lacked all of them. #1 Comfortable beds. The mattresses and pillows were very old. I had a hard time deciding which would be better, the floor or the bed. #2 The house must be clean. The kitchen especially was very dirty. The stove hood was greasy. Microwave had food splatters. Utensil drawer was filthy with grime, it hadn't been cleaned out in awhile. The fridge was filled with food, we could not fit all of the food we brought into it. Pots and pans put away dirty. Both of the bathrooms had bar soap for hand washing as well as the showers. How many other people have used that soap? #3 Hot water. There was enough hot water for one person to take a shower. There was not even enough hot water to fill up the bathtub. Other complaints include the bbq not working, the owner claiming that the house will sleep 8 when we had a hard time with 5 people sleeping comfortably and no instructions on how the owner wanted us to clean the house before leaving. It was a good location, close to downtown and the waterfront. Unfortunately those do not make up for what this house was lacking. When we return to Hood River in the future, we will look for other rentals.

Owner's Response: For 2017 I have hired a professional cleaner who will clean prior to every new arrival. This women was a very nice guest. she initially had a few happy people with her but asked me to allow more family guests - at the last moment that did not give me time to prepare my home for the new guests who were moving from another property they were not happy with to be together with her family.. I learned a valuable lesson - do not allow last minute guests unless I have the time and materials for the new guests.

Nice house fully equipped with a nice balcony out back with stunning view oh Mt. Adams

  • 4 of 5

This was a nice place for a short 2 night stay. Close to Hood River town center but in quiet neighborhood. Host Dave gave great suggestions for outdoor activities including an awesome waterfalls hike. We didn't do any cooking (too many great restaurants and brew pubs to pass up), but the kitchen was fully equipped. Works for 2 couples, wouldn't recommend more than that.

Good 2 bedroom option near town

  • 4 of 5

Great house if you need 2 bedrooms - also has a futon in the living room. Location close enough to town to be convenient. Dave is very helpful and clear about how things work, and left us notes to make sure we knew where the futon and blankers were, and that the food in the fridge is OK to eat (he does request that you replace anything you eat).

I did find that the house could use a more thorough cleaning -- there was a lot of dust and the smell of dust. I have passed this recommendation on to the owner and hope that he will consider improving the cleaning regimen between rentals -- but otherwise our stay here was great!

Poor - not clean

  • 1 of 5

I was very disappointed in this property and would not rent it again. One of the beds was clearly not clean and there was insufficient bedding to remake it completely. It indicated it could sleep 8 but we could not find enough linens for the futon mattresses so were glad we brought sleeping bags. There was open food containers in the refrigerator. Overall cleanliness was unsatisfactory. It does boast good views and is in a nice quiet neighborhood. This could be a nice property if these issues were resolved.
