About Karen & Mike Schaaf

Mike and Karen Schaaf reside in Savannah, Georgia with their three dogs. These are our two collies relaxing on the back porch of the Captain Morse House.

Karen & Mike Schaaf purchased this house in 2013

Why Karen & Mike Schaaf chose St. Marys

On a short weekend trip, we discovered St. Mary's and fell in love. The small town is quiet and picturesque with historic architecture, beautiful waterfront vistas, and the friendliest residents. You feel at home right away!

One look at the Captain Morse House, and we knew we had to become its caretakers. We have spent the first six months painstakingly restoring it to it's former glory. We are very proud of it, and would like to share it with you.

What makes this house unique

The Captain Morse House is located in the heart of historic St. Mary's, and is the closest VRBO to the riverfront and Cumberland Ferry.

Restaurants, shops, and the beautiful Howard Gilman Waterfront park are all short steps away (our dogs LOVE the park!)

The Navy's Kingsland Submarine base is a ten-minute drive, great if you are active/retired military.

Lovely small town

  • 4 of 5

We were there for two months and other than the fact we both had the flu the stay was wonderful. The house is quaint but very livable. Sitting on porch can be wonderful. The town and house are very dog friendly.

Charming home and a great location

  • 5 of 5

We brought our extended family together for a Christmas holiday celebration. The Captain Morse home couldn't have been more perfect for our group. The kids loved running around in the back yard, the kitchen was well-stocked and the island made for a great buffet set up for meals. The house is a very short walk to the Cumberland Island ferry and the cute shops in town. A great time was had by all!

We have stayed at "The Captain Morse House" on both our visits to St. Mary's and would not stay anywhere else. This house is amazing and so warm and relaxing. We spoil ourselves twice a year with a vacation to this historic town. The house makes the vacation for sure. From the beauty of the outside, with the huge porches, where we relaxed with coffee in the morning, iced tea in the afternoon and wine in the evening, to the comfortable inside of the home, this is a truly decadent delight to call your home for the time you stay. And can we talk about the beds?! These beds are so comfortable and cozy. The kitchen enabled us to comfortably cook, but honestly, all the wonderful seafood restaurants made it difficult to even think of cooking. The owners are truly wonderful people and are very warm and more than welcoming! We can 't wait to book our next stay and escape to our favorite vacation destination.

Family Thanksgiving weekend

  • 5 of 5

Access to and directions once inside were very clear and concise, house was very clean well laid out. Still had old world charm but was very comfortable and convenient for the 7 people staying there. Beds were very comfortable and the kitchen was large and open with modern appliances. Location was outstanding for enjoying St. Mary's. Great stay !!

Lovely Visit in a Lovely Town

  • 5 of 5

Although our stay was brief, it was pleasant and memorable. St Mary's is a small, unique, friendly town where we spent an entire day exploring. By chance, we got an hour+ tour of town via golf cart from the Visitor's Center, just a block away (only $5/adult and dog friendly!!!). The Captain Morse house is unique as well, very clean, fenced-in yard and in the middle of everything. It's an interesting historic house but with all the modern conveniences. We would definitely return for a longer visit!

Stafford Wedding

  • 5 of 5

The Captain Morse House was the PERFECT home for our family while in St. Mary's for our son's wedding. With 3 kiddos in the military, our time together as a family is very limited so it was great to be under one roof. Not only was this home spacious on the inside, but the large porch areas and backyard were perfect. Located in the heart of St. Mary's, everything was within walking distance. We LOVE the owners and will definitely be returning for another visit!!
