About Karen Schaaf

Mike and Karen Schaaf reside in Savannah, Georgia.

Karen Schaaf purchased this house in 2013

Why Karen Schaaf chose Georgia

On a short weekend trip, we discovered St. Mary's and fell in love. The small town is quiet and picturesque with historic architecture, beautiful waterfront vistas, and the friendliest residents. You feel at home right away!

One look at the Captain Morse House, and we knew we had to become its caretakers. We have spent the first six months painstakingly restoring it to it's former glory. We are very proud of it, and would like to share it with you.

What makes this house unique

The Captain Morse House is located in the heart of historic St. Mary's, and is the closest VRBO to the riverfront and Cumberland Ferry.

Restaurants, shops, and the beautiful Howard Gilman Waterfront park are all short steps away (our dogs LOVE the park!)

The Navy's Kingsland Submarine base is a ten-minute drive, great if you are active/retired military.

Cute, convenient, comfortable!

  • 4 of 5

The house is overall great. The beds are really comfortable. The few small things that need improvement I've already shared with the owner and she can correct very quickly.

The kitchen is very well stocked with utensils and basics. I added a cheese slicer to the drawer. The turkey fryer cam in handy to cook the LowCountry Boil for my brother's rehearsal dinner. I bought chip clips and I think the flower girl thought they were her toys, I never saw them after she found them. LOL!

We missed most of the 4th Friday festivities due to the wedding rehearsal but, that looked fun.

There are several restaurants within walking distance and the waterfront is 200 yards away to go look at the boats. The Cumberland Island tour office is across the street. Antique shops and a coffee/wine shop are on either side with more nearby. Don't miss the ice cream at Bessie's and Market on the Square - I got a huge scoop for about $2.50!

You'll enjoy your stay in the Captain Morse house.

The price point of this property should be that of a one star hotel

  • 1 of 5

Multiple locations throughout the house where rodents have chewed through the walls, ceiling and floors are just covered with wire screen. No proper repairs have been made in years to this home and it shows. Does not comply with current safety codes such as ground fault protected circuits in kitchen. House is not secure. No alarm dont leave valuables.

Owner's Response: (Owner’s Note: These guests inflicted a great deal of damage to our home during their stay. We had to retain their security deposit as repair costs far exceeded that amount. They threatened retaliation if we did so.) To our recent guests, We were saddened by your review; hundreds of our other guests have provided us with only positive feedback and 5-star ratings. We take pride in being extremely responsive to concerns that our guests may have. However, you reported no issues at any time during your stay and even reported the “house was charming!” This response provides clarification to future guests regarding the unfounded accusations made in your review. The Captain Morse House is a 112-year old home in the historic district of St. Mary’s, Georgia. Keeping our historic home preserved to its original beauty is extremely important to us. We have gone to great lengths to maintain the original bead-board ceilings and woodwork. That is why we were shocked that the original heart-of-pine floors we painstakingly restored were left covered with animal feces. We employ professional extermination services as a precaution since the home is so near the water and located near several restaurants. They have gone through the home and ensured there is no way for rodents or other pests to enter. We must also address the incorrect accusation that our home does not meet code requirements. The city inspector that you called in your attempt “to get nasty,” as you wrote, found nothing wrong during his inspection. Although your motive for requesting the inspection was malicious in nature, we were pleased with the highly satisfactory result. The puzzling accusation that our home is not secure must also be addressed. All doors in our home lock appropriately. We have never, during the course of hundreds of guests staying in our home, had any issues with safety concerns. The town of St. Mary’s is very proud of our restoration of the Captain Morse House. Sharing our home with our guests has been a joy so far, and with this one exception of your stay, our guests have been delightful, respectful, and appreciative of the tremendous effort we put forth to provide exceptional accommodations. Honestly, the disrespectful manner you and your guests inflicted on our home is the most shocking transgression that has occurred in St. Mary’s in recent memory.

Beautiful historic home in downtown St. Mary's, GA

  • 4 of 5

The home was beautiful. It was a functional older home. We had one shower that didn't work well and the plumbing was consistent with an old home (poor water pressure when more than one thing was running), but overall we loved this place and would rent the same home again.
