75' of lake frontage offers our guests spectacular water views. The property is an acre of land so you can take advantage of the space by playing games and enjoying night time bonfires. You can really create lasting family memories here!
Our lake, Van Auken, is a semi-private lake so it's never overcrowded and everyone is friendly! It is well known for its great fishing as well for crappie, bluegill, bass, pike, perch, sunfish and pickerel. As it is a 244-acre all-sports lake with a maximum depth of 46 feet, speedboats, jetskis, kayaks, canoes and sailboats all coexist peacefully and everyone enjoys the water in their own way.
In relation to enjoying the water, our 100' pier offers plenty of parking for watercraft. Bring your speedboat, fishing boat or jetskis and have a blast! The boat launch is a two-minute drive away.
So after a day enjoying the sun and the water, fire up the grill and play some lawn games while the steaks are grilling!
My father bought the property back in 1969, long before lakefront properties were popular. My grandfather, an avid fisherman, had retired there for the plentiful and varied varieties of fish and my father fell in love with the beauty, peace and tranquility of the lake. As kids, we went there every weekend during every summer and had so many awesome experiences! My Dad's favorite thing to do after a day on the lake was to spread a blanket and take a snooze in the shade on the hill. My Dad passed 20 years ago and it's the only place I feel a connection to him.
I grew up with all of the other kids on the lake -- roaming the countryside, skiing, sailing. Now it's my two children growing up the same way I did -- with my friends' children -- learning to wakeboard at age 4, going fruit picking, exploring through the weeds for turtles and frogs, making s'mores at the bonfire. Life is good when you're at the lake :)
This property appealed to my Dad because it was the last in a line of cottages, which offered more privacy as the property to the east has remained undeveloped for 100 years. The property is just under an acre and we've enjoyed huge games of softball, relay races, obstacle courses and just room to run!
Our property has the unique benefit of being on a semi-private lake, so that it's never as busy as Paw Paw Lake or any of the Sister Lakes. 90% of the homes on the lake have been owned by the same people for two generations or more so there aren't too many strangers around. There are no resorts on the lake and very few people rent their homes.
Also, we are right in the center of all of the activities that the Harbor Towns area have to offer. There's everything within about a 30-mile radius to do, including zoos, beaches, hot air balloon rides, rafting, winery tours, etc.
We (3 couples and a 6 month old) spent three nights at the house and enjoyed every minute of it. The house is terrific, easily accommodating our group, and we could not have asked for anything more in terms of extras--water toys, bean bag set, kitchen extras, etc. The owners were very helpful and gave us everything we needed to know about the area. The back yard is huge with a great firepit area where we hung out each night. While we were unable to secure a boat for the lake itself, it was only a short drive to South Haven, where we spent time on the Lake Michigan beaches. In terms of a reliable stay at a great price, this unit cannot be beat.
This owner is renting her place "while under rennovation" to pay for her rennovations". Despite the fact that the owner claims to "inspect the property prior to guests arrivals", we arrived to standing septic water with wooden horses over the area permeating the grounds, and were unable to even open windows due to the stench. When we went to use the one toilet, the seat was broken. When a guest tried to wash her hands at the sink, her feet were washed as well, as the sink trap was not hooked up! The chenille bedspread left on the couch for a throw (?) had a huge yellow stain on it, and the carpets needed cleaning. The dock is sketchy and leans about 25 - 30% and is definitely not safe for children. We took out the little paddle boat, dragging it through the lilly pads it was docked in, only to be stranded in the middle of the lake by a broken rudder! The fire pit was actually a pile of yard waste and rennovation garbage - there was everything from ply wood, to particle board, to (No I'm not kidding) drawers from a chest. The grass, leaves, etc made it difficult to burn due to the winds. It was actually quite comical to watch someone climb the pile just to roast a marshmellow! After our first dinner, we loaded the dishwasher, only to find when finished, that it wasn't hooked up. You will see the property is now listed as sleeping 6, but when we rented it was listed as sleeping 10. Don't be fooled by this property. This is simply an owner trying to fund her rennovation with your money! When we contacted the owner, she put all of the problems back on us, saying we should have called when we got there to report the problems. In our attempts to speak to her we were hung up on, not once, but twice! We did stay and make the best of it, and managed to have a great time with eachother, as there were a number of people coming from all around the state - as far as 7 hours away. We simply want to prevent this from happening to any other families in the future. It will indeed be a stay to remember, and fodder for many stories and jokes in the future.
I had been looking for a place to take my teenagers on vacation for months, and thank goodness we booked this place!! We got to the cottage Tuesday 7/23/13 and Renee was there waiting to give us some helpful information about where the boat ramp is, stores in town and how to hook things up etc..which was a time saver and exremely helpful! Beautiful house on a nice size lot was my first impression. The second day there we blew a tire on the road to launch the wave runners, and Renee gave me the number to Rudell Repair shop in Hartford. I called and a guy there came out and towed my trailer in and fixed the tire within 1 hour. That never happens!! Fred and Joan (great neighbors) took us out on their pontoon and gave us the history of the lake and people that lived there. They ended up getting us 10 lbs of blueberries before we left. South Haven is a delightful town with charming personality and we hope to book here in the future!!
Some friends and I rented this property for a girls weekend and loved it!! The cottage is very clean, cute and has everything you would need. I would defiantly recommend renting the row boat as well, so you can paddle out and swim in the lake where there are less Lilly pads. The water in the lake was clean and warm we loved it. Also only about 15 min from lake MI I would definitely recommend renting this property.
In beautiful Southwest Michigan and all the harbor towns in the area there is an unlimited number of both indoor and outdoor activities for the whole family! Up and down the lakeshore from Grand Haven all the way down to South Haven there are events and attractions all year round. Music festivals, fairs, fests, farmers markets, concerts, and water activities abound! South Haven is the closest harbor town and offers beautiful clean beaches, awesome restaurants such as Clementines, tons of cute shops and antique stores, winery tours and cool bars/nightclubs -- including the Idler which is a large sightseeing boat moored to the pier which offers mouthwatering food and good entertainment.
