Beautiful home and views

This home is the perfect vacation. Secluded, quiet and uniquely positioned on the dunes. The community pool is nicely heated. Photos don't do justice.

Great location, nice property, though a little old and tired.

The property was nice and clean except for one small issue. The owner was fair with me and gave me a partial refund because of the issue. The property was built in the 70's, so it is a little old and outdated, but for the price and great location we were happy.

Nice House But Watch Out for ALL THE FEES

The house itself is nice. The beds were pretty comfortable with decent quality sheets. As the house is on the beach the tap water is not the best, meaning the ice and drinking water have a strange taste. It would be nice if the house had some sort of filter for the faucet or even something like a Brita pitcher. The house is in an excellent location as it is right on the beach and is about a 30 minute drive from downtown Monterey.

However, I feel that the property is misrepresented in that the cost per night that shows up when searching on HomeAway is significantly lower than what you end up paying with all the taxes and fees added on. I was careless when booking (which was obviously my fault) and did not closely examine the fees and assumed that at least some of them were refundable. They were not. There is a reservation fee which is understandable, but what is charged seems a bit high. I could even understand a cleaning fee if it was not over three fourths of the listed price for just the house for one nights. I cannot however understand why guests are being charged to help pay an HOA fee. I know the house has access to a few neighborhood amenities such as tennis courts, but the amount being charged to go towards the HOA is way too high. There is also a service fee which is even more than the HOA fee, and it is unclear what it is even for. The fees alone almost doubled the final cost of the house for 2 nights. And this is all before taxes. My parents were understandably concerned about the price and also decided they wanted to be closer to Monterey, so I attempted to find the cancellation policy for the rental to no avail. When I contacted Violet to ask what the policy was, she never answered. This is the part I cannot get over.

She accepted to my booking request in less than an hour but then disappeared and could not be bothered to show any sort of customer service. This is likely because she knew I had booked close to the dates I would need the house and that if she waited long enough I would be stuck with her property, both because of the hassle to find another place and because of whatever cancellation policy she might have (never got an answer about what the policy is by the way).

I give the house 4 stars and the customer service 0.

Owner's Response: Dear Kimberly, Thank you for choosing my property as your vacation spot. I agree with you about the exhuabrant fees. I as an owner is hurting and rethinking the best way to continue serving my guests in a WIN-WIN scenario. The HOA fee that I tag on is to cover the extra fee I am paying for renting my home in the gated community. It does not cover the HOA fees that I pay monthly and annually. As for taxes , cleaning fees and VRBO service fees, I wanted to be transparent on what I am working with. When your pre-pay reservation payment came in, the online vetted you and sent me an email that informed me that you were already vetted, hence I automatically accepted, even though I was off the grid. When I was back, I followed up with you to provide you with the address and access codes to my house. The CANCELLATION POLICY is stated online to be 60 days prior to stay date. I was not trying to avoid you in anyway. If you read reviews from my previous guests, they would indicate that one of my best qualities is my ability to respond and address my customers questions. I take customer service very serious and apologize that I did not meet your standards at this time. I hope to make it up to you if you choose my place as your vacation spot on your future vacation plans. As for the water taste, yes, I will provide a water filter. Beautiful location on the beach

The setting was perfect, with a nice boardwalk out to a lovely beach. Unfortunately the house needs some upkeep. The furnace would not go on. One burner on the stove didn't work. I am not certain, but the dishwasher may not be functioning properly. There was little to no soap in the bathrooms. There was no foil or saran or napkins or anything basic in the kitchen. There were ample pots/pans/dishes, though. I called the owner about the heat, and right away she offered to help make things right, which she did. She seemed very honest, which I appreciated. I still give this rental 4 stars because the owner tried to be helpful and the location is truly lovely.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your feedback. The power outage that contributed to some problems has been fixed. The soap, Saran Wrap, napkins and all the little things missing in the kitchen has been replenished. We have replaced the stove and dishwasher. The house now has brand new dishwasher, stove, washer & dryer. The bathrooms and downstairs hall way and entry and kitchen also are new. Our goal is to make sure our customers feel welcomed and heard whenever they choose our any of our homes. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to serve you. Great views. Television selection was terrible. Could not watch baseball playoff games. Some of the furniture needs updated ( dining room chair, shower curtains) but overall was comfortable. Place is really off the beaten path!!

The accommodations were wonderful. We noticed that the electric kettle was damaged and we have bought one for your property . This can be used by the future guests and us when we return soon.



We loved our day trips to Monterey, moss landing, 17 mile drive, Carmel, Carmel Valley, Big Sur , Point Lobos and Salinas Valley. But most of all we treasured our mornings and evenings at the beach at home. For this, we are sincerely grateful.
