This charming beach house is located on the NW Kohala coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. You will have all the comforts of home and can spend your time relaxing on the lanai enjoying the beautiful 180 degree view of the ocean where you can watch migrating whales and playful dolphins pass by.
We love hosting, having folks have a terrific stay and hopefully return.
Lisa Aaron purchased this house in 1982
It has breathtaking views on an acre of land. When the Humpback Wales arrive in Kohala and you have the good fortune of watching them from the house Dec-May you will understand why we fell in love with our home and why people from all over the world come to the Big Island
The home is very peaceful and private. There is nothing more magical then awaking to the beautiful views and the sunsets you see are Awesome. It feels like you are home. One sunset in the hammock and you might just never want to leave.
My husband and I spent 7 weeks in this lovely home and enjoyed it even more than our visit last year. We had made some suggestions to the owner, Lisa, regarding lighting and an additional ceiling fan in the kitchen, beach equipment, and air conditioning and all improvements were completed. The location of the cottage is very private as you are in a residential neighborhood, the home sits on an acre of land, and the street is dead end. While in the cottage, we would spend most of our time during the day on the front lanai, which stretches the entire length of the cottage. This lanai affords you sweeping views of the ocean, the island coast line, and whales! It was just so peaceful to enjoy breakfast, and sunset cocktails on this lanai. Beaches are in close proximity with the nearest beach, Spencer Beach, about 5 minutes away. This is a good family beach. Our two favorite beaches are not much further away, and include the beach at Mauna Kea resort and MauuMae beach .
Weather was phenomenal as it only rained once in the seven weeks we were there. The location is superb if you are looking for sunny, dry weather. For lusher landscape, which translates to more rain, the town of Hawi is about 15 minutes away up the North Kohala Coast . It is an eclectic mixture of quaint shops and restaurants and the Kohala Coffee Mill, which is a fabulous coffee shop! The town of Kawaihae is also a short distance away down the hill and is part of the South Kohala coast. Good restaurants abound there as well, including the Blue Dragon, which is an open air restaurant with entertainment, Cafe Pesto, which has great pizza and the Kawaihae Seafood Bar, which has a great Happy Hour!
We hope to go back to the Kohala Cottage again next year and would recommend it without reservation!
My husband and I recently spent 6 weeks at the Kohala Cottage. The cottage, which is really a house, was as advertised and was clean, comfortable and well stocked with linen and kitchen ware, as well as a washer and dryer in the garage, which was really convenient . Among the better features was the privacy and ocean views that the house afforded. It is in a quiet, residential neighborhood and other houses are a distance away. The ocean views are panoramic and change with the time of day. Good beaches and good restaurants are only 3 to 8 miles away with an easy drive.
The kitchen was very functional with good appliances. We did feel that additional overhead lighting in the kitchen area would be an improvement as at times it just wasn't bright enough during meal preparation. Additionally, more substantial beach chairs, a full size beach umbrella and boogie board/s would be a welcome addition.
The property manager was pleasant and professional and available as needed and the owner also indicated she was available at any point in time.
We would definitely recommend the Kohala Cottage as a Big Island destination.
We three stayed here for a week over the xmas holidays and the location is perfect for heading to the best beaches on the island, the best coffee in Waimea, and the best macadamia nuts (free samples!) just down the road. Loved hanging out on the patio, and cooking up fish on the grill. Nice quiet neighborhood and views from the master bedroom were great. Enjoyed walks along the nearby shoreline trail. Of all the lunch spots, we loved the freshness and value at Kawaihae Kitchen. The house was a very hot upon our arrival, so ask for it to be 'opened up.' The loft is good for older kids (not young ones), and can be a bit warm. We ate in a lot, and the kitchen had everything we needed.
We stayed here for 4 nights to finished up a 3-1/2 week stay on the Big Island over the xmas holidays. The house was spotless, roomy and nicely decorated. We loved the expansive ocean view and enjoyed seeing the whales + babies breaching in the bay in the distance. Was a perfect base for exploring the north end of the island. Hawi, Waimea and Waipio Valley were only a short drive away. Enjoyed the more local and less touristy beaches in this area - Mahukona “Beach” (basically an abandoned sugar company harbour) is a great hangout. Parking at beaches near the resorts fill up quickly so you have go early. Da Fish Shack was the best! A few very minor cons were that we found there were too many mosquitos to enjoy the lanai in the evening (coils and spray provided for those who want to brave it though!) Also it is in a residential development. Even though the houses are a good distance apart you will hear the neighbours leaf blower(s.) This place was a bit on the pricey side for us but we were willing to pay for the terrific views - would be a great value for a larger group and would stay again if sharing. Would recommend this place for families or couples wanting a well appointed place to hang out.
This house was a great choice for staying north of Kona. The location was very close to great beaches, the lovely Kohala mountain road, and Waimea. We appreciated the availability of water toys and towels. The view from the Lanai and master bedroom were great. The listing description was accurate and appropriately represented the appearance of the house and the amenities. The property was clean and well-maintained. My only suggestions for improvement: the property was very warm the first night, perhaps opening it up a bit sooner before guest arrival would ensure guest comfort. I would recommend the property to other Hawai'i visitors.
We stayed at the Kohala Cottage (it's really a house, not a cottage) in January. It was exactly like the photos, very comfortable, roomy, and private with an open floor plan and gorgeous views of the ocean from the lanais off the living room and master bedroom and through the sliding glass doors to both rooms. It was also very clean and nicely decorated and the kitchen was well equipped. There are beach and picnic accessories which are very helpful.
It is located in a small residential neighborhood with the houses at quite a distance so there is a lot of privacy and it is very quiet. It is very convenient to beaches and good restaurants.
We were very pleased with the accommodations and the owner, Lisa, is easy to communicate with and provides back up for the property manager. I would highly recommend this property as a great alternative to a condo or hotel.
Located just a few minutes north of the small town of Kawaihae, you will be within a 10-minute drive of the 5 best beaches on the Big Island and just 40 minutes north or Kona airport. If you prefer to stay close to home, there’s Spencer Beach just a 5-minute drive from the house. Or you can enjoy watching the whales from the Lani. Ocean Sports is in Kawaihae Village and they can accommodate all you water sports /adventures. You can also try a zip line or take a canoe trip down Da Ditch. Or just play a great round of golf.
