About Frances Ponder

After retiring from public school teaching with 30 years, I wanted to do something totally different. When the Matson House became available, I purchased the property and totally renovated the inside and decided to use the house for short term vacation guests. I have two adult sons, Jason and Aaron. Jason was commissioned from United State Naval Academy with a degree in mechanical engineering and from Navy Post-Graduate School with a masters in mechanical engineering. He is currently a LT Commander in the US Navy stationed at NavSea, Washington, DC. Jason and Cristin married Oct. 2017 and make their home in a historic row house in downtown DC. Aaron earned a degree in physics and then moved across the US to earn a masters in renewable energy engineering at Oregon Tech. He currently works for Portland Power in Portland but wants to move to a more progressive renewable country.

After retirement, I began volunteering in juvenile court through CASA (court appointed special advocate), work local elections for the election commission, and work sporting events at Science Hill High School and East Tennessee State University.

Frances Ponder purchased this house in 2011

Why Frances Ponder chose Johnson City

Since I was a public school teacher, the Matson House fits my style. It was built as a school in the late 1800's and was called Matson Institute. The Matson House is located on adjoining property to my log home and additional acreage. The house is very comfortable and nicely furnished. I guarantee the house will be very clean and ready for you at check in. I am always available for directions, suggestions, or any need you might have.

What makes this house unique

The inside of the house is completely new and very clean. All new plumbing, electrical, foam insulation, high speed wireless internet, HD cable-TV, ADT monitored security and all furnishings create a comfortable home environment. The house is user friendly!

A wonderful refuge

  • 5 of 5

We were visiting Johnson City to visit family for Thanksgiving. My older sister had a fall last summer that she has never really recovered from. Being able to go back every day to the Matson house offered us a wonderful quiet place to 'recover' from the stresses of dealing with her illness. I was extremely grateful for the care that Frances gave every part of our stay; the house became a wonderful refuge from some trying days. Thanks you Frances for creating such a lovely home away from home.

All the comforts of home

  • 5 of 5

If a country setting, peace and quiet are what you seek Instead of a stuffy hotel, this is the place to be. All the creature comforts one would ever need, not far from town, grocery, resturants etc. The host is amazing and welcomed us graciously. Plenty of room for couples yet small enough for a single occupant. Plenty of parking for my truck and motorcycle trailer. The driveway however is gravel and must use some caution when steering motorcycles. I drove mine on the lawn to turn around. If I am ever in the area again I will be sure to book this property, hands down.

Comfortable and cozy converted schoolhouse!

  • 4 of 5

This is a charming house that anyone would enjoy renting for a vacation or for celebrating a special event such as we did in celebrating my husband's birthday and get together of family members. Everything you need is right here from kitchen items to very comfortable beds. We enjoyed exploring Jonesborough nearby, the oldest town in TN. We toured Tennessee Hills Distillery and shopped the many interesting shops on Main St. The men in our group enjoyed attending the NHRA races at Bristol Speedway, just 30 minutes from the house. All in all, a very enjoyable weekend and would recommend this sweet house to anyone inquiring! It is in a very lovely and quiet neighborhood and was very relaxing. Thank you to Frances, owner, who provided all we needed for a very memorable and fun weekend and who did an amazing job on this renovated old time schoolhouse!

Great Place to Stay

  • 5 of 5

Location, location, location...... Beautiful country setting with a view of the mountains.... yet it is only a few minutes to shopping and restaurants. The house is impeccably clean and well appointed. By looking at the exterior of the old schoolhouse you would never be able picture the inside. We truly enjoyed our stay and would absolutely return.

WELCOME!!

The Matson House welcomes all non-smokers but no animals. Please continue reading and booking if your guests meet these restrictions.

The home is located approximately 3 miles from Johnson City Medical Center, East Tennessee State University, Mountain Home Veterans Hospital, and Jonesborough. Numerous chain and locally owned restaurants are within minutes. Historical Jonesborough is the oldest town in Tennessee and the home of the National Storytelling Festival. It is approximately 5 miles from Interstate 26, The Mall, and Science Hill High School/Freedom Hall complex. The home is located inside the city limits of Johnson City but has a Jonesborough mailing address and GPS location.

Views of the mountains and visiting wildlife are a plus to this country setting so close to the conveniences of Johnson City and Historical Jonesborough. Many TVA lakes provide opportunities for fishing, picnics, and boating--Watauga Lake (45 minutes), Boone Lake-under repair (10 minutes), Cherokee Lake (60 minutes) and Douglas Lake (70 minutes). Many hiking and biking trails are within minutes of this location, and the Appalachian Trail is accessible from various locations including Erwin, Tennessee, 20 minutes away. The Virginia Creeper Trail is a 34 mile rail-to-recreation trail starting in Abingdon, Virginia, traveling through Damascus and ending just past White Top Station at the Virginia-North Carolina border. This is a favorite hiking/biking trail about an hour's drive from Johnson City. The house is located 30 minutes from Bristol Motor Speedway, an hour from Asheville, NC, a little over an hour to Gatlinburg/Great Smoky Mountains, Pigeon Forge/Dollywood, and Knoxville, Tennessee, home of the Tennessee Vols and Women's Basketball Hall of Fame.
