About Desra McDonald
The original portion of this sweet little rock foundation cabin was built in 1940’s by a father for his family. We believe it as added on over the next few years, creating a square shaped cabin. In the 1960’s the family added on the back portion to modernize the cabin and included a bathroom, back bedroom and loft area. In 2012, the daughter of that father sold the cabin to a group of friends making it into what you see today...River Rest. These friends have taken almost a year to completely refurbish everything up to current day standards. This includes new windows, all new flooring, new electrical wiring and a total gut and redo of the bathroom. The remodel allowed us to provide an electric stove as previously there was only an early 20th century wood burning cook stove. It was a beautiful piece but huge and unusable due to the fire hazard and insurance coverage. It was sad to see it go! The floods of September 2013 have proved a huge impact on this little mountain community. Everyone is still restoring and rebuilding and looking forward to the future. We are so grateful and blessed to be able to continue to share this mountain property with guests and friends. We are looking forward to creating more history with our families and yours….. Enjoy River Rest.....

Perfect end of summer vacay!
Thank you so much, Desra, Jack, Randy, and Tawny!! River rest cottage was the perfect getaway from our busy lives! It was so peaceful and exactly what we needed to relax and recharge! The sounds of the river was a great way to start and end the day. The cottage was wonderful and so cozy! We hope to be back in the future!
Wonderful Home
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this beautiful home. Peaceful does not begin to describe this location. It was the perfect place to relax and simply sit back and enjoy the sounds of the steam. The house was immaculate and so cozy. We loved coming home to it each day and hope to return in the future. Thank you for having us!
As advertised - Beautiful location & cottage!
Wonderful location and cottage. Great communication with Desra throughout. We did experience a minor issue while staying and the owners were very quick to resolve it. Our family had a wonderful time visiting the area and relaxing by the river. Highly recommended!
Wonderful Retreat
Restful and plenty of room. My granddaughters had a wonderful time.
BOOK IT NOW
I think I said "I love this place" so many times my family was ready to finish my sentence the second I said "I". River Rest was exactly what its name implies. A restful, beautiful place to recharge. Life is hectic, and what a PHENOMENAL place to slow down. Jack and Desra are the kindest hosts I've ever had, meeting us at the house and showing us around and giving us tips (which was very handy for these Kansas folks - Clap for bears, be quiet for moose was one my daughter very much grasped, Haha). The St Vrain, so soothing and mesmerizing had us on the porch most of the time when we were "home". Cooked and or took home most of our meals there. The house had everything we needed, and with groceries not far away we put the kitchen to work. No matter what we did, we always had exactly the thing we needed! NO cell service was a major perk to me booking the listing, however, the WIFI worked wonderfully for Netflix for the kids and for me to check my emails for work.... even though I tried not to as much as possible. We spent time playing board games and exploring the "back yard", but cautiously! It's STEEP! (*** my teenagers dream spot was at the top overlooking the mountains. WHAT a VIEW!)
The activities surrounding the cabin were endless, and we hiked Roosevelt national, and in RMNP. I am SORE. It was fun to see all the snow on the trails by Bear Lake. We have never seen snow like that. We visited Estes to ride the tram so my daughter could see the chipmunks up there that they let you feed, and of course shopping. In Estes we ate at Ed's Cantina and Smokin Daves BBQ (recommend both! YUM.) Pizza in Allenspark was delicious. Raymond's store owner is elusive, but we got a laugh walking down in hopes to see if he was there to let us in.
What a beautiful slice of mountain life. So thankful to have had the opportunity to experience the mountains in the spring. Would book again in a second! **** I maybe cried a little on our way across the bridge for the last time. SOAK IN ALL THE MEMORIES YOU CAN GRAB AT RIVER REST. It's incredible.
Beautiful property, very well kept and newly renovated. Fabulous location
The property was lovely. The house was clean, well equipped, and newly renovated. It had everything we needed. The grounds were lovely. The house is right next to a small river. It all was wonderful.

Make a break for the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and try something new this vacation! Enjoy authentic riverside cottage living as you explore there is to do!
Integrate yourself into the small Colorado mountain community of
Riverside / Raymond elevation 7000ft on this vacation adventure. Our neighborhood rolls along the Middle St Vrain River and is full of other unique cabins and cottages, pine and aspen trees. We are mindful and respect the wildlife that abounds here and shares our neck of the woods.
There is a small "store in town"....hours and offerings vary....perhaps a good spot to grab a cold pop as you head out for the day. Probably a must stop just to soak in the flavor of where you are staying!
Your cottage retreat is about 2 hours north of Denver, 15 miles from Lyons, 20 miles Estes Park and 10 miles from Wild Basin / Rocky Mountain National Park.
