About Samantha Smy
We are a British family living in Georgia. This cabin is somewhere we can get together with our children and future grandchildren and enjoy each others company.
Samantha Smy purchased this Cabin in 2012
Why Samantha Smy chose Big Canoe
We love the mountains and the lakes and we wanted a place where the children can explore, fish, hike and play. Some great memories of spending good quality family time.
What makes this Cabin unique
We fell in love with this home because of its simplicity. The surrounding area is beautiful. Slightly cooler in summer here than where we live because of the mountains. The cabin is big enough for all of us to find a place to sleep (including our dogs) yet small enough for us all to be together.

A Great Stay
Lots of room, a good location, a responsive owner and everything we needed for a great stay.
Spacious Rustic Cabin
Enjoyed our stay, plenty of room, great location! Will return.
House is really nice. Only issue was the lack of lighting.
The lighting was very limited. So we had a hard time reading or playing board games. Everything else was nice. One other suggestion is mark a path to throw out the trash. We got lost in the community trying to take the trash out by the other entrance/exit to the community.
Thank you for the suggestion of the directions to the north entrance for trash drop off. I will do that.
Additionally, we are working on the lighting this winter. We quite enjoy the cozyness but appreciate that others may not.
Thank you for your review.
Loved the screen porch.
Nice big cabin with everything you need furnished.
Nice big screened porch.
Big canoe great! Cabin ok
Big canoe was great and we had a wonderful time. The cabin was less than expected with a lot of little issues. Terrible coffee maker, broken towel rack, broken tv, broken screen door, poor lighting, broken DVD player all upon arrival. No big deals, but annoying. The only two relatively bigger problems were the lack of supplies provided. We had to go out and purchase trash bags, toilet paper and dishwashing detergent on day two. The other was mosquitos in the home. If you didn’t cover up you were going to get bit and we nary left a door open. But all that being said, we had a great time and spent very little time during the day in the cabin. The above mentions barely made a dent in our fun, hence the four stars! But if you are going to be staying home for a lot of your trip, these little issues may be more of an issue for you.
Thank you for your feedback. I'm sorry you felt that our cabin was below par. I wish you had called or texted me about some of the issues when you arrived. I could have fixed a few immediately and any that needed extra attention could have been fixed before the next guests visited. We have had several families stay there since September and unless we stay there ourselves, we are oblivious of the 'to do' list.
Our housekeepers usually leave enough paper goods and supplies for the duration of your stay. I will discuss this with them because you are not the first person to say this. I will also be going up to check on the TV's. Are both of them broken? I knew there was an issue with the one in the master (the cable keeps coming loose) but as far as I am aware the one in the living room was working with the DVD player.
I'm happy you enjoyed Big Canoe and the surrounding area and once again thank you for your feedback.
Fresh mountain air, peace and quiet
The house is just as pictured and somewhat bigger inside than I thought. All fixtures, facilities and utilities were clean, working and comfortable. Advice for first timers - try at all costs NOT to arrive after dark. I have a very good sense of direction and had 2 GPS devices (My car's and my iPhone's Google maps) and I could not find the cabin for 20 minutes once I got inside the gate to Big Canoe. Had I arrived during daylight this probably would not have been an issue (I kept missing the place by a few yards and had to circle back). Also, as with most of the houses there, there is no exterior lights, so unloading your car in the dark is not recommended. Arrive during daylight. Out on the deck there is a nice "Green Egg" barbeque, so bring your lump charcoal (No lighter fluid !!) and enjoy some great outdoor cooking. We ate indoors, but if you plan to eat outdoors be advised that the deck needed sweeping and maybe a power washing during our visit. Communication with the owner is good (I only used text and e-Mail, but they were responded to in a reasonable amount of time). We didn't get to use any of the Big Canoe facilities (Pool, golf, lake, waterslide, etc.) because we had other things we wanted to do in a short period of time, but they looked nice as we drove past them). Overall, the kids and my wife liked the place too and we recommend staying there.
