Space 1,100 sq. ft.
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

This unit can be your truly relaxing getaway. Enjoy your morning coffee watching sunrises over the Croatan Sound and relax in the evening watching the sun go down from the private dock or the screened in porch.

A true sportsman’s paradise, the cabin is great for hunting, fishing and water sports of all kinds. You can launch your boat or jet ski at 2 nearby boat ramps, one at the foot of the Umstead Bridge in Mann's Harbor, the other on Mashoes Road. Both will get you to a private dock in 15 minutes, or launch your canoe or kayak right from the house. The bottom is sandy around the dock and beach area so kids will love the swimming or just crabbing to catch the night’s dinner.

Just minutes away from Historic Roanoke Island to the east, where you can enjoy the NC Aquarium, The Lost Colony, Island Farm, The Elizabeth II Historic Site, Civil War sites, Art Galleries and The Christmas Shop, just to mention a few of the best local attractions. To the west wildlife abounds on the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, where you can enjoy kayak tours and miles of nature trails.

5 star dining, in addition to regular fast food and grocery chains are just minutes away. Outlet shopping as well as locally owned unique shops can be found throughout the county. Visit the historic Cape Hatteras Lighthouse or take a drive to Corolla to see the wild horses.

It is all at your fingertips from the rustic charm of this cabin in the woods.

Fantastic view and awesome weather

  • 5 of 5

Third times a charm. The previous two times we stayed at this cabin we had horrible weather (a Nor'Easter and torrential rains and flooding). We had a week of sunny 85* weather this time, and really got to enjoy the cabin, dock and sunrise. The cabin was clean and comfortable.

My parents fished off the dock and caught 4 fish. We attended the Bluegrass Festival in Manteo and had an all around good time.

Nice but still needs repairs from hurricane Matthew.

  • 4 of 5

Owner has a very busy work schedule, but has people who can take care of problems. We had nothing if not the best responses to minor issues.

The rustic cottage is is in a remote, private, quiet area adjacent to the National Wildlife Refuge and has it’s share of wildlife. We could see (with a GOOD pair of binoculars) 2 pair of Bald Eagles who hung out in the trees all day, fishing. Lots of birds. It’s on a harbor, not on the ocean, so there are no breakers to hear unless a hurricane is passing by... I grew up going to the family cottage on a bay, so I am used to no breakers. The dock repairs had not been completed so we had to use the neighbor’s dock. High tide made that a little difficult to get to.

The cupboards are well stocked with spices dishes, pots and pans, silverware, etc. Beds were comfortable and clean. Better than most motels.

If you like privacy, this is the place. If you want to be close to the action, it isn’t. The drive into Manteo is about 20 minutes.

Where we live, we have to drive 1 - 2 hours to get to anything so we’re used to driving. The trips to Corolla. Kill Devil Hills and Cape Hatteras were not out of the ordinary for us.

Such an amazing experience

  • 5 of 5

I've been to the outer banks almost every year of my life and have stayed places anywhere from Kitty Hawk and Nags Head to the mainland in Grandy on Walnut Island. I've never had a bad vacation here however I didn't know what I was missing til I stayed at this Cabin in the Woods. Being far enough away from the hustle and bustle to enjoy solitude was truly special yet we were close enough to be 15 minutes from any of the things we love to do in Manteo. I can truly say this is the best vacation location I've ever had.

Initially I was really worried about the bugs as we are essentially on a protected wetland next to the Alligator River Nature Preserve however they were only bad one night here! We didn't need to use bug spray and were able to sit out on the deck watching the sound all but one night. The stars were like I've never seen before since we are so far away from big city lights.

Also the fact there is no fee for pets is nearly unheard of. We were able to bring our big dog and he loved swimming in the sound and chasing sticks for hours. We were also happy to find many restaurants and shops that we could bring him to even as an 85lb dog! Ortegaz in Manteo comes to mind but there were many others. He is one happy dog and might be as pumped as his owners to be here.

If I had any issue it would be with the beds. They were a bit stiff but honestly it's hard to find anywhere that has the perfect bed when on vacation so I'm used to that and it was a very small price to pay for the wonderful experience we had here.

Thanks to Darrell for such a great price for a great location. I've got to say for all the places I've stayed I've never been to the same place twice but we are already planning to return here for next year! If you enjoy wildlife and being away from it all you literally can't go wrong with this place. We love it!

Get away from it all!!!!!!!!!

  • 5 of 5

Great property, excellent location, just far enough away from everything to feel like your in the middle of no where at the same time as being within driving distance of all main attractions. Close to the wildlife refuge, and we saw 8 black bears! Our power went out on the last night, however we received excellent communication with the property manager. He answered my call & the problem was quickly resolved. I would recommend heavy bug spray, we are used to being in the woods so we use 40 Deet Lotion. Bugs get heavy at night, but we were prepared.

Great getaway on the sound

  • 4 of 5

We arrived to a mostly secluded, tidy cabin and a beautiful view of the Croatan sound. The views around the cabin are truly incredible and the sunsets are to die for. We purchased our 10 day temporary NC fishing licenses prior to driving down & it was great to have the convenience of fishing at our leisure. Although the dock was damaged in a storm, efforts are being made to repair it, and you can still easily fish off of the bank. Being in nature has it's ups and downs.. the ups were: seeing various types of wildlife (frogs GALORE, turtles, numerous birds, crabs, and dozens of fish were caught), the serene lapping of waves against the shore, and nights on the screened in porch with the sound of frogs chirping in the background... BUT the downside: the bugs were TERRIBLE, so citronella lamps are a must! We're from West Virginia, so we're no strangers to bugs and creepy crawlers, but the "yellow flies" will haunt your dreams. They seemed to be worse when rain was expected or right after the rain.

The cabin was nothing fancy, as expected, and was equipped with a lot of appliances such as microwave, can openers, DVD player (with a variety of DVD's) and flat screens - which gave us some conveniences that were appreciated - especially on our one rainy day.

The listing states that there are 2 bedrooms, but my husband and I used the downstairs as our bedroom and my parents slept upstairs in the master, so it could easily be said that there are three bedrooms. There was a lot of space for us to move around and not get in eachother's way, and it was an enormous plus that our fur babies were able to accompany us.

Food recommendations - We loved Darrell's and Bob's for breakfast, New York Pizza Pub for dinner, and on the 'pricy but good' list is - Tale of the Whale, and Basnight's Lone Cedar.. both directly on the sound and have incredible views.

If you're looking for a property that offers you a lot of room, activities, interaction with nature, seclusion, breathtaking views, a drive minutes from the beach, and minutes from shops and fantastic dining, then this is for you.

Darrell was very quick to respond to any questions or issues that I had and I would highly recommend the property! Thankful for a beautiful vacation and lots of photos and memories. 💜

If you like nature and tranquility, you'll love this vacation spot!

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay in Darrell's cabin. The kitchen was very nice and well equipped. The screened-in porch was our favorite spot to spend time. The wildlife sanctuary was very interesting, and we thoroughly enjoyed the evening symphony put on by the tree frogs. Because the property had some damage from the storm Matthew, the downstairs bathroom was a little rough with no floor covering, and the dock was unusable which was not good for our fisherman. However, he managed to fish anyway and did catch some very good fish.

The spot was very quiet and the views were gorgeous.
