TOP 8 REASONS why the RIVER PLANTATION PLACE (RPP) is YOUR perfect getaway:
1. The house fronts historic South Newport River. It overlooks a vibrant tidal marsh out towards St. Catherines & Blackbeard Islands...your gateway to Sapelo Sound & the Atlantic!
2. Three great naturalists were captivated by the locale: Audubon painted Savannah Sparrows; John Muir wrote about Hollywood South's unique seascape; & William Bartram hiked nearby Old Coastal Hwy. 17
3. All within reach, tons of attractions from Hilton Head to Harris Neck, or even Charleston to Cumberland Island await you! 'Forrest Gump' shrimp boats in Darien & fishing villages interlacing the coast can take you back in time
4. You can bike the 'Coastal Rail Trail', crossing 43 picturesque rivers & creeks dotted by historical markers
5. Shellman Bluff (old oystering community) is Home of the Sapelo Saltwater Fishing Club & 'Speed's Kitchen': where people take their time...& the fried fish & crab-stuffed flounder are out of this world!
6. Featured by Road Trip USA, the 'Smallest Church in America' marks the entrance to the Yellow Bluff Plantation where the house is located
7. Nearby is Harris Neck National Wildlife Refuge--'one of the single best sites in the South for birdwatching'
8. Only the RPP owns 'The Book' or Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil bestseller autographed by author John Berendt & the model for 'Bird Girl' herself, Lorraine Greenman Ganz!
No need to be Sherlock Holmes to see this dream come true! In 2004, a husband-&-wife business owners built a 'dream vacation house', paying attention to the craftsmanship...traces of which can be felt as you step on the breathtaking wood floors, dine at the ornate kitchen, or sip coffee on the veranda of the RPP. The couple chose a site on an 18-acre oxbow hammock brimming with live oaks & pines, one amongst 1,600 back-island jewels .
In 2013, Ken, the new owner, urgently flew from Minne'snow'ta to Savannah's Candler to help take care of a sister who got sick. The life-changing event rearranged his priorities & clarified his values! One day, he looked for a property close to Savannah that could become a haven for his family & friends. He chanced upon the River Plantation Place standing on its 14-foot solid stilts overlooking South Newport River (no factories up & downriver equals edible seafood & abundant wildlife). Ken knew right there & then that: THAT was a DREAM coming true as the orange sun over the brackish marsh warmed his face! Filled with visions of hope for his beloved sister Vicky, the VRBO concept of RPP was born! Up to this very day the dream is realized each time laughter echoes in RPP's walls.
In 2014, the RPP founded 'Adopt JILL' (Jintotolo Island Lighthouse Locale). One percent of income is pledged towards the preservation of the Philippine beacon & coral reefs. In 2015, the RPP became a patron of nearby Altamaha Riverkeeper.--In light of the original & new owners' love of entertaining family & friends, the RPP hopes YOU will be enriched by your stay as you explore Georgia's coastal paradise. Come & rediscover your priorities!

Why Chris Reddick chose Townsend
Just half an hour south of Savannah, the RPP nestles on 'Yellow Bluff Plantation' named after the Yellow Pines or Longleaf Pines which once blanketed the region. The property lies in the middle of a shrimp-shaped island, giving you a dazzling panoramic view of the sunset! 'The Smallest Church in America', with stained glass windows imported from England, is a landmark at the entrance onto Yellow Bluff. Just 16 mi. east off Sapelo Island is Gray's Reef with excellent fishing & colorful tropical sea life, a testament to the area's tropical allure.--From the porch or dock, view the sun as it bounces off the tidal marsh after fishing, kayaking, beachcombing, birdwatching, biking, or golfing. Cook Ms. Chris' Lowcountry Boil...& don't miss the utterly unique Gullah-Geechee culture which gives the area a Caribbean flair! Enjoy a campfire & view the stars on a dark night with friends & family. After a restorative sleep, you will feel engaged & inspired!
What makes this House unique
Jacksonville Airport (JAX) is an alternate major airport. Landmarks include the 'Golden Isles' immortalized by Sidney Lanier's poem 'Marshes of Glynn' & the beloved bioreserve Altamaha River by naturalist William Bartram. As you arrive, the colonial coastal feel of the home will wrap around you & WELCOME you with a kiss of salt air!

We enjoyed our stay at the RPP. Are ate some great restaurants, rose bikes in the Harris Neck Preserve. We just wished the fish were biting If you want to fish this is not the place because of the tides. Overall the stay was fun and relaxing.
The house itself was very nice, and the location was convenient. When we arrived, the floors needed to be swept and the dryer was not empty. We never found the two all-terrain bikes, the kayaks were filthy, and there was no info card on the entertainment center. More than two dish towels would have been nice. I’m not sure we would stay here again.
Thank you Mrs. L for your feedback. We value your opinion and will make every effort to let others know we are on it! We lost our bicycles in the last hurricane Irma and the notes in the property description already noted that. The kayaks are located downstairs under the home and get rain water in them sometime, but we will do our best to have them turned over and ready for you. We also are restocking towels as they seem to walk off, but will have more for all future guests.
We sincerely hope you will consider the River Plantation Place again.
Fantastic Family Memories Made Here...
We were hoping that River Plantation Place lived up to all of the great reviews and we were pleasantly surprised that it went above and beyond. It was perfect. We had only ever driven through Georgia so this was our first time in the area. It quickly became one of our most favorite vacations. Our family of six (four children ages 10-16) stayed here comfortably for the week. The home was spacious and filled with local decor, books and travel guides. It had everything we needed. The decks were a wonderful place to relax and take in all the sights and wildlife. The marsh was mesmerizing - a paradise for bird and wildlife enthusiasts. The yard had everything we could want from plenty of room to play catch, a fire pit, hammock and riverside dock.
Location is great - off the beaten track. Beautiful sunrises and sunsets from the property. Quiet, peaceful and serene yet only a couple minutes from the highway and many close day trips. We visited Harris Neck, Shellman Bluff, Darien, Savannah (& Tybee Island), and Jekyll Island (& Driftwood Beach) easily for day trips leaving plenty of time to enjoy the home and property during the morning and evening hours. The extreme change in tide was something we'd never experienced and resulted in many hours on the dock fishing, crabbing, wildlife watching and kayaking. The different birds that came in at low and high tides were fun to see and identify. Saw a few alligators across the marsh and enjoyed an early morning watching a dolphin swim and feed right off the dock. We appreciated the binoculars and many local Georgia bird/fish/wildlife guides provided. We used the grill many nights and the fish cleaning area was helpful.
Chris and Alan were easy to work with and responded promptly to any questions we had. Alan, who was unavailable for a fishing charter while we were there, connected us with a local guide. He was fantastic. Our day out on the water fishing and the opportunity to explore Blackbeard Island was a highlight of our trip. We can't wait to return.
We would definitely recommend River Plantation Place - it lives up to the reviews.
Thank YOU Mr. and Mrs. A from Ohio for your exquisite review of the River Plantation Place. We are thrilled your family visit will be noted as one of your favorite. We love it when families discover each other again and make time to relax and rejuvenate together. We will be waiting for your call to reserve perhaps a little longer visit to our Coastal Georgia secret treasure to explore further. We hope Alan will be available on your next trip to take in a little water and island touring (and even some fishing).
Warm Salt Coast Regards,
Chris Reddick and Kenneth
Paradise by the marsh
This was our second time staying at the house. We absolutely love staying there. It is very clean, spacious and has beautiful views of the marsh. Last spring our family enjoyed kayaking, fishing and crabbing. I loved cooking in the kitchen to look out over the beautiful marsh views. This winter it was too cold for crabbing, but we really enjoyed bike riding over at Harris Neck. We saw birds, several alligators and even an armadillo! We look forward to our visit again.
We are thrilled you chose to return to the River Plantation Place again for a relaxing and down-to-earth experience. We appreciate your support and look forward to your return again.

Had a great time. This our second visit. Great boat parking and wash down. Dock a major plus for catching bait. We celebrated my oldest Son's marriage and leaving to serve our Country in the Air Force. A truly Great Time and experience for all!!
We had a wonderful time! The property is marvelous - the house and the experience were fabulous! The view is absolutely perfect! The dock is close to the house, and very easy to access. All of the necessary items in the house were provided. We had everything we needed. It is remote, but also close to historical sites and activities. We had planned to go into Savannah for an evening meal, but the view and the porches and the general surroundings were so fabulous that we stayed at "home" for one of the most lovely evenings of our vacation! I highly recommend this property to you. You will NOT be disappointed. Just fabulous!
The RPP's away from crowded centers of Savannah & Jacksonville...yet centrally located near some of the best treasures the Coastal Empire has to offer! Our top 3 favorite day trips~ (1)Savannah River Street (especially at St. Patrick's Day; grab a Leopold's Ice Cream), (2)St. Simons Lighthouse & Village (don't miss Southern Soul BBQ), & (3)Shellman Bluff.
