Great Place and Friendly Staff

  • 5 of 5

Myself and three kids stayed in old San Juan with Linda in March. With all of my travel recently, I have had little time to post a review. I did however want to post a review as Linda and her staff were exceptionally nice and I would recommend this apartment to anyone that is looking for a nice/ clean place in Old San Juan. It is within walking distance of several great restaurants as well as many fun attractions. Linda and her staff were also very helpful with directions and sightseeing opportunities.

Easter week

  • 5 of 5

Great location, near the cathedral, the Easter pageant passed under the balcony. The front room is a little noisy at night, the back 2 rooms are quiet. There is street parking out front and there are parking grages near by. There is a kitchen but we never used it, tons of great places to eat close by.

It was fun being a "San Juanero"

  • 4 of 5

We loved being right in the oldest part of San Juan! It was right in the middle of every place we wanted to be. For me, it was a blessing to have wireless internet also, because with my "bad" hip, I wasn't doing a lot of exploring this time. I was able to get online and do family history, which I love, when I wasn't on the balcony reading a book. The stairs were a challenge with my hip problems (I get a new hip in six days!) - there's a full flight into the apartment, and another flight to the loft bedroom, but it really was fine. I figured it was more like "real" San Juan living.

We also loved that it was a whole apartment, not just a hotel room - and the main room is enormous! We were able to buy groceries nearby and cook for ourselves. We still went out to eat at least once a day - we had so many places to try! By the way, the little cafe with tables in the street just up the block has awesome food. Also, if you like Uber, there are oodles of Uber drivers very close by pretty much all the time. We learned how to use Uber on this trip, and it was great.

We loved the owner, Linda, as well as her "troops" downstairs in the gallery. We enjoyed stopping in to visit and chat with them. They also helped us out when we had questions about the apartment or other things in the area. And when the refrigerator started making a loud noise, we let them know and they had someone out to fix it right away.

I did not find most of the furniture comfortable. The best chair for me was the office chair at the desk. Oh, by the way, the desk is great- it's a huge table and my husband and I were both able to work at it at the same time. (This was also partially a business trip for us.) One other drawback was that because of the location, this is not a quiet place. Especially on the weekends, there was noise outside all night long. It wasn't as bad in the loft, but it definitely could be heard. I'm sure it's a lot quieter in the other apartment, but I'm glad we had this one, because we loved opening the balcony doors to the street outside and enjoying the fresh air. We also ate at the little table on the balcony.

Thanks Linda and crew!

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your review! I'm glad you enjoyed yourselves, stairs notwithstanding (I'll have to take that up with the conquistadors). Hope to see you again when you're all healed up and sprinting up the stairs!

Stop looking -- this is the BEST apartment of them all!

  • 5 of 5

My family & I rented both apartments from Linda for two weeks & we enjoyed it tremendously. We've been going to San Juan for an extended Christmas vacation for the past 5 years. I put a lot of effort into researching apartments and this was the best of all. First, Linda and her staff are very responsive and super nice. Emails are answered quickly and every question is answered.

The apartments are clean and well appointed. As seasoned travelers, we know that often places are advertised as having 'everything' that you need and that is not always true, but for these apartments it was quite true. This review is for the Gallery Apartment (the Garden Apartment is equally great and you can find my review on that as well).

The living room is HUGE & between the AC & fans, it is delightfully cool. There are three couches that open to queen sized beds, 2 chairs and a large desk with a chair. There were 6 of us between the two apartments (one couple & 4singles) and there was plenty of space. Not that you'll be spending much time watching TV but there is a large flat screen TV & direct TV, and the internet is fast & dependable. The balcony is a great place to hang out, relax & people watch. Great art throughout the place.

The kitchen is great. There is a table and four chairs and literally everything you need to cook your own meals -- pans, pots, bowls, dishes, utensils --- coffee maker, toaster, microwave. Oven, stove and fridge are all in good shape. Downstairs there is a full bathroom and there is a second full bathroom upstairs. There were lots of clean soft towels available.

There is a great upstairs with a bedroom with a king sized bed, a smaller bedroom with a twin bed, and the full bath. There was plenty of room for clothes and all the other stuff we seem to travel with, so we were able to completely unpack all of our stuff and feel completely home.

The neighborhood is fantastic. There is a supermarket a block and a half away, and also the Puerto Rico Drug Store -- a store that sells WAY more than the average CVS type drug store. Where the supermarket and drug store are is the Plaza de Armas, one of the nicer plazas in the area. A real find for late night coffee is a small kiosk type place right in the plaza. Do you like coffee? If you don't know it, some of the best coffee places are in OSJ.

Very safe, near the Governor's mansion. The store downstairs is great and the staff is ALWAYS helpful and supernice. Highly recommend.

Had a great time

  • 5 of 5

we rented the Gallery from Linda in February of 2014. It was a last minute trip - wanted to get away from the cold and snow in Illinois. We checked out the different HomeAway spots in Old San Juan. Many were booked. The reviews on Linda's place sounded positive so we took the dive.

Linda responded almost immediately to our emails. We messaged each other back and forth. One question I had for her was whether or not the internet was fast. We wanted to upload a lot of photographs. She said she didn't think it was fast. In reality it was super-fast :) - we had no problem uploading hundreds of photographs. If you are wondering about internet - there you have it. It works and it is fast.

The Gallery has an upstairs bedroom with a small bedroom behind the main bedroom. The stairs are a bit steep, but other than that not a problem. The kitchen was nice and spacious. We cooked pizza on one occasion and some light meals on other occasions. Large refrigerator, freezer and stove.

The balcony has a wonderful view of a busy little Old San Juan street. You can sit out on the balcony and sip coffee, eat a snack, and watch the tropical downpours - when they occur. I enjoyed watching the tourists below. This location is right near several old churches - historic areas. We walked everywhere! The only occasion we did not walk was when we visited a little artsy movie theater in San Juan. Obviously if you stay in Old San Juan you aren't going to walk over to San Juan City proper.

The best part of this location is the location. You literally walk out onto the street and are in a historic area. Very close to the ocean - a few blocks down to the west, south, and north will take you to the city wall and ocean views. We spent most of our vacation just wandering around Old San Juan and taking photographs of the beautiful old architecture, vivid colored buildings, and cobble stone streets.

Linda's place has satellite television. Hundreds of channels to choose from. We watched tv a few times - but it wasn't something we spent much time doing. There are some nice music channels that play background music.

The living room is spacious. We didn't bother Linda or the staff below (there is a shop beneath the Gallery). When we arrived they were kind and helped us get situated upstairs. When we checked out they were helpful, as well. I would stay at this location again :)

You won't be disappointed!

  • 4 of 5

We were in San Juan for Xmas week and we wanted to stay somewhere central so that we could get around easily. Linda's apartment is very central and was perfect for us. We were travelling with two teens and two smaller kids and we were able to walk everywhere! Restaurants, the supermarket and factory outlet stores were just steps away. As were many landmarks and tourist attractions. The free trolley was also just a block away and we took advantage of it a few times as my four year old loved to ride on it and we didn't bring a stroller with us.

The apartment felt very safe and we felt completely at ease leaving the teens by themselves whilst we went to explore. There were police outside all the time as the Governor's house is just up the street. The apartment was clean and the AC was super powerful. We only used it at night though since we liked to keep the balcony doors open during the day. Oh and the wifi was awesome! You won't be disappointed.

WHERE’S THE BEACH?

Old San Juan is not beachfront, but it is where everything else is. Most people choose to stay in Old San Juan because this is where everyone comes at night, so traffic coming into town then can be a nightmare. It's easier to get in & out of town during the day to go to the beach. That way you can return, shower, maybe take a nap before going out again. Then after dinner, or whatever, you just have to walk a few blocks and you’re home, instead of hassling with traffic & finding a cab.

The nearest blue flag beach is a long walk, or a 5 min cab or bus ride. We have a picture among ours here (#19), There are nearer beaches, just a few blocks away, but Escambron is the nicest. It is a well maintained, free, clean, safe, beautiful beach; the only one with a lifeguard. Unlike the hotel beaches, it gets sun all day, and there are plenty of palms for shade.

The beach is part of a very interesting park with historic battlements & part of the old walls of the city. From the beach you see both forts.

Early mornings the women’s water aerobics group meets there. Very friendly group, you can work out with them for free. There is an outdoor snack bar that also serves drinks cheap, and a reasonable restaurant with outdoor terrace and indoor air-conditioned dining room, serving local food.

You will not find a better beach in San Juan.
