About the property

Unique Loft With One Bedroom, 75sqr Meters, Terrace, Parking, And Quiet

Located in the heart of the medieval city wall, this apartment is in one of the most famous buildings of Avignon, a classified historical monument from the 14th century. It is only a few minutes' walk to the Popes palace, just near the walking zone, restaurants, shops and the best place to buy food in town: 'les halles' the indoor farmers market.(address is 1 rue du crucifix, avignon)

If you want to live the French life where you can walk anywhere, this is the place. It is easily accessible with private parking, close to all private tours from the city and the train station is walking distance to the apartment.

There is a large private courtyard below with big trees and it is very quiet, it almost feels like you are not in the city at all. It is located on the top floor, with elevator. The views from up there of the city churches, monuments and the Popes palace is stunning. There is private parking available only 100 meters from the apartment, a rare luxury inside the wall.

The flat is 57 square metres inside and 18 square metres covered terrace (total of 750 square feet). Honestly a terrace is fantastic in town, and you will probably spend most of your time there.Perfect for a couple, but possibly for 4 or 5 adults.

Double panel windows, hard wood floors, with floor heating makes it very comfortable for a long stay in the winter if you want to try the provencal life (porcini's truffles, game, and root vegetables) for a while....

The bed is a top of the line queen size 160 x 200 long, and there is a comfortable fold-out couch as well that can sleep 2.(double bed size 140 x 200), and a single bed on the mezzanie as well. A spacious bathroom with tub/shower, sink and washing machine. Kitchen has all appliance you need to cook and also a dishwasher. The main room has a large flat screen tv and sofa, a dinning area, and a beautiful wrought iron stairway that takes you to the wood mezzanine. On the terrace there is a lounge space and a dinning area for 4. On the loft you'll have the bed, a desk and storage. Phone is free anywhere in the world and internet is either wi-fi or with cable, fiber optic cable connected so very fast. The building is very secure with his double gated entrance and reinforced doors.

This is truly a unique place in avignon, often people stop and take picture of the building. The incredible beauty of a 14th century monument with all confort and modern equipment....

About Fabienne Mc Auliffe

We are a family of five, my name is Fabienne, I am French, born and raised in Avignon. My husband Kelly is Americain and we live in France for many years now...We currently live in Les Angles with our 3 daughters, just accross the Rhone river, only 5 mn away from the city of Avignon.

Fabienne Mc Auliffe purchased this studio in 2012

Why Fabienne Mc Auliffe chose Provence

Many years ago this building was the Art school of Avignon where I use to go after school, so it was very special to me. It was remodeled in 2000 into private appartments and the school relocated. When we visited we fell in love with it! it was a unique opportunity. We remodeled the inside to our personnal taste in the winter of 2012/2013.

Avignon is very central in Provence, and we have no doubt that our guests would like to enjoy the real French city life, walk everywhere in town and at the same time being able to take their car for nearby seightseen.

What makes this studio unique

Of course parking in the city is a luxury and we like that, but the covered terrace is what we loved the most. It is protected from the wind, and can be used all year around. The park below makes it very quiet, a unique benefit in town. I was thinking of guests coming up with luggages, and I thought the elevator is a must! not many ancient building would have it. The location is perfect, easily accessible when you enter the city and walking distance to everything. I also like the privacy of this place, no one can see you accross the street, a rare thing in any city as we all know.

Appreciated more, the longer you stay

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at Fabienne's apartment immensely and appreciated the work that she and Kelly have put into the place. The many extras they provide make this apartment an especially pleasant and comfortable place. The kitchen is very workable (no oven, but there's a dishwasher, stovetop and microwave), with nice dishes and cooking gear. The bathroom has tub with a good shower and houses the washing machine. It also has the most incredible view of the palais des papes, which probably lengthened our showers unreasonably.

Beds are comfortable and the whole place is well appointed and very tastefully decorated.

We loved the terrace, where we spent probably too much time, since it was hard to tear ourselves from the comfy sofa for adventures or to opt for meals anywhere other than at the terrace table. The superlative wines were greatly savoured with a rich array of victuals we purchased daily from the vendors they recommended.

One of the only downsides is the mosquitoes, which were annoying even in September and apparently generally a problem in the old city, with its watercourses in unexpected places. They would find us in the late afternoon on the terrace, and sneak into the apartment to terrorize us in our beds during the nights. Fabienne left instructions to help reduce the problem, which we followed, except that we didn't try using the plug-in insecticides for the apartment, preferring not to have the chemicals in the air. The other methods weren't quite sufficient, however. It seemed that mosquito nets over the beds (as we saw in other Avignon apartments) might be needed.

After 11 days in Avignon, we appreciated even more the advantages of the Clos des Arts apartment. Access to an open courtyard, pleasant outdoor space, a dedicated parking space, 3rd floor space with an elevator, and an ideal location are very uncommon in the old city.

If you go, try Fou de Fafa, very nearby (but reserve!). Get take-out from Rissoto & Co. Visit Les Halles. And enjoy your wine on the terrace. We will recommend Avignon and Fabienne's apartment to everyone we know.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much Myles for taking the time to write this excellent and long review. I am very happy that you had a good vacation's time in the apartment, and that you will go home with some great memories of Avignon. I totally agree with you about the mosquitos net, this is something I will put in place this winter and it will be ready for the warmer days. You were the perfect guest and I would welcome you back anytime...all the best to you and your familly, Fabienne

Elegant, charming and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed in this beautiful apartment in early July. The owner was a wonderful host and was quick to respond to our questions both before we arrived and while we were staying in Avignon. She also made fantastic recommendations for restaurants, one of which was our favourite dining experience overall in France and Italy. The apartment itself is located on the top floor with incredible views of the Popes Palace and includes a peaceful terrace which was hard to tear ourselves away from! The kitchen is fully equipped and the bathroom includes a washing machine which was very handy. The decor of the apartment is charming and elegant with lovely little touches throughout. The bed was very comfortable which is an extremely important thing for me. A big bonus is the air-conditioning unit that is in the apartment and which I understand is not in many of the other buildings within the old city. We arrived during a heat wave and so we were very grateful to come back everyday to a cool space. We were very pleased with our stay and would not hesitate to recommend to others looking for a great location and a gracious host. We hope to return soon to this little gem.

Wonderful place within the walled city

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the apartment for three weeks.

The apartment is very comfortable for two adults, it is on the 3rd floor overlooking the courtyard and magnificent 300 year old trees. It has a large terrace/balcony which is where we spent the majority of our time having meals and drinking lots of the local wines. The bathroom window gives a great vista of the Popes Palace.

Everything you need is provided in the apartment including free worldwide phone service and fibre optic TV service/internet.

We wanted to experience living life as a local which we easily did particularly as the main market "Les Halles"

is a short 5 minute stroll away. Here you can purchase just about everything you need , fresh fruits/veg , meats, fish , cheese, bread , wine and our favourite- fresh oysters !! (did we mention wine ?? lol )

The apartment is very well located within the walls and we found that we did not require a car to get around, everything is within walking distance which is a great way to explore.

Fabienne is truly wonderful. Anything you need is just a phone call away and she is very glad to assist you in any way. She even met us at the TGV station and transported us to the apartment.

If we return to Avignon again, we will without a doubt be calling on Fabienne to rent us the apartment.

The three weeks we spent at the apartment was just an incredible experience.

Perfect all around!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I recently stayed for 5 days while on the last leg of our honeymoon and we couldn't have been happier with our choice. As others have stated, the apartment is in a perfect location and the value of being inside the wall + parking (around the corner from the apt) is second to none. We really appreciated the ability to settle in to "life as a local" with the amenities that were provided and we were so glad to choose a rental property over a hotel. A highlight of the trip was simply bringing back our Les Halles loot of local wine, cheese and saucisson to enjoy on the balcony. The apartment complex is full of year-round dwellers, mostly retired, which provided for a quiet and restful stay. Fabienne also provides a wonderful resource book full of recommendations for both Avignon and the surrounding areas that we utilized daily. We will surely return to this wonderful apartment and charming city again!

Magnificent building with the sooo cool host

  • 5 of 5

Once in your life you have to stay in a 600+ year old building this beautiful. This is such an impressive building to stay in and the apartment is brilliant, comfortable with everything you would possibly need plus Fabienne's unique touch. The balcony space is brilliant. This is a beautiful city and surrounding district, so much to do and so interesting. The apartment is so central, walk everywhere in the walled city. Les Halles, 4 mins, great food market, if you take the walk through the garden and courtyards behind the apartment, be transported. Whatever you might need is only a few minutes walk.

Fabienne looked after us like dear friends, we had the best time, she is so cool.

Skip the lift and take the stairs and be amazed.

This is a great stay.

Avignon is centraly located in Provence and everyhting is less than one hour drive: Luberon, Saint Remy de Provence, Pont du Gard, Uzes, Arles, Isle sur Sorgues, Les Beaux, ect...Not to mention that the city who was the cultural capital of Europe in 2005 is fabulous and rich with history. The beach is also not far, lots of possibility and fun things to do; we are from Avignon and we'll be happy to help you anytime. My husband is a Sommelier (wine specialist) and he organises Wine tour in the region if you need. We, of course, love food and will give you the best tips on restaurants.
