About Sue Thorpe

Paul and Sue, long time residents of Gig Harbor share their love of the water and this special property which has been in their family for three generations. They love to sail and now have the time to travel the world and yet always enjoy coming back home to one of the best places to live.

What makes this house unique

Your own shoreline, dock, kayaks, inflatable boat, fishing and crabbing equipment, plenty of beach chairs and ice chest for picnics are available. Fishing and crabbing from the float does not require a fishing license since it is a private dock.

This is a unique home depicting harbor life as it was in the times when fishermen dominated the village life.

Enjoy the harbor activity of the various boats, kayaks and water boarders from the comfort of the glass enclosed sunroom or on the deck. There is always something interesting happening in the harbor.

The public park activities, such as outdoor concerts, can be enjoyed from the comforts of this home. The park is situated directly across the harbor. The Tides Tavern is also just across the water and is accessible by kayaks or the inflatable boat.

Great house for family stay!

  • 5 of 5

This was a wonderful place for our family to gather. The setting is stunning and the house is cozy. Yes, the kitchen is small but with the BBQ outside we were able to make meals for a group. The kayaks were a special bonus.

Everyone Loved This Place

  • 5 of 5

Everyone loved it, both the kids (2-12) and the adults! It's a beautiful setting ...gorgeous landscaping with many Japanese Maples, wood stairs, decks and so on. Felt a bit enchanted! It's great to sit on the deck or in the enclosed porch and watch the boats at sunset or sunrise. The kids could watch jellyfish float by on the dock. Make sure kids under 12 wear a life preserver (many, in different sizes, are provided). We all took the kayaks out, at one time or the other, to the lighthouse and back. Nice open living room and dining area. Well appointed with towels, dishes, glasses, silverware, blankets, laundry and dish soap, and even shampoo, soaps, and so on. There were a lot of pans in the kitchen.

We would have preferred they not be Teflon that was flaking off though. And, there was no high chair there. Other minuses were the inflatable boat (groundskeeper said it didn't come with but it does) was left in a sorry shape, upright and full of water for some time. And, the switch on the towel warmer in the master bedroom was apparently striped and permanently in the 'on' position... so we turned it off with a screw driver. The kitchen is a bit small but we managed fine with it and there was a great 5 burner (new) gas grill for cookouts.

Buy your groceries in Tacoma if you can before coming to the house. We had to go to Safeway which is a bit of a hike and pricey. The little 'grocery' nearby really only sell wine and beer... great wine selection though.

Overall, we were very pleased staying here! It's a very lovely home away from home.

Owner's Response: We have a high chair, play yard/sleeper and stair barrier. If it was requested (even after arrival)we would have furnished it. We also have a junior booster for the chairs. I am sorry I didn't inquire about the ages of the children.

Lovely property, inside and out.

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful setting with many trees and a gorgeous view overlooking the harbor. Perfect place for kids to learn to kayak without waves. Close enough to town to buy groceries, but far enough to feel secluded and close to nature. Lots of space for the family to spread out on the wraparound porch, back lawn, and many cozy rooms. Very homey. I imagine that toddlers and young children should be closely supervised at all times due to balconies and proximity to water.

Beautiful view and comfortable house

  • 4 of 5

My group of 6 adults and 5 young children enjoyed our weekend at Xanadu. The location is amazing and we loved the huge windows along the entire length of the house. We especially enjoyed paddling on the kayaks and visited the lighthouse beach multiple times. We were happy that the owners provided plenty of life jackets in all sizes from infant to XL adult. The children also loved exploring all around the house, decks, and yard - it's perfect for hide-and-seek!

The kitchen is small but well stocked and the new gas grill worked great. The house has a great selection of DVDs, games, and puzzles.

The only real issue we ran into was that the inflatable raft was not usable (owners say they are working on fixing it), but overall we had a wonderful weekend. You can't beat the location!

Vintage beauty

  • 5 of 5

Upon coming to Gig Harbor for over 10 years to visit family, this is my first VRBO experience and it was wonderful! The owners were very congenial, and and the place was in excellent condition representing some of the vintage past of the harbor. The grounds were lush and well manicured and afforded plenty of privacy. Will definitely revisit this rental.
