About the property

1447 square feet --available year round--but NO LAST MINUTE RESERVATIONS

Located 4 miles west of historic Donner Summit and the heart of Serene Lakes, this cozy two story cabin offers all the amenities of home. Four comfortable bedrooms sleep up to 12. There is a full bathroom on each of the two floors. A fully equipped kitchen w/ microwave, stove, dishwasher, blender, coffee maker and refrigerator make vacationing fun and easy. There is more than adequate storage in the basement. There is AT&T cable TV, wifi, Blueray streaming and many playable CDs and VCR tapes. The cabin is located near the Serene Lakes, which offer kayaking, canoeing, and fishing (for stocked trout). For winter, the cabin contains floor board heating and an efficient wood burning stove (w/ plenty of wood available). You will be within a mile of the Royal Gorge ski area and minutes away from Sugar Bowl, Boreal, Squaw, Alpine Meadows and Northstar. The SLPOA schedules many activities for children and adults during the summer months. There is much opportunity for day hikes in the area. Also, you can play horseshoes in our horseshoe pit, or bacchi ball with our friendly neighbors. And we have a webcam to capture the latest weather conditions, which we would be happy to email you. Also, we are installing a new forced air heating system with completion expected in December, 2016. NOTE: NO LAST MINUTE RESERVATIONS!--we need at least 3 days to process your credit card.

About Rick Krone

I have always loved hiking, backpacking and fishing in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. My wife and I have enjoyed hiking, fly-fishing, and cross country skiing in the Soda Springs area. My sons were active in boy scouts and also have an appreciation for these mountains. In particular, there are many planned activities here during the 4 July holiday. We are also supporters of the Pacific Crest Trail, which is nearby just off of Fwy 80, near Boreal ski area. The area has fabulous outdoor activities, not to the mention the railroad and Donner Party history.

Rick Krone purchased this cabin in 2013

Why Rick Krone chose Soda Springs

The property is soooo peaceful and surrounded by towering lodgepole pines. Its great sitting out on the deck in late afternoon enjoying a cocktail and listening to the birds. My family, including our three grown sons, also enjoy the outdoors here, and soon so will our grandchildren (Cooper and Nadine). This year (2016) we have fabulous snow, ideal for skiing and winter activities.

What makes this cabin unique

fresh air, enjoying nature, physical aerobic activity (cross country skiing, swimming, hiking, fishing, canoeing/kayaking, & mountain biking) and other SLPOA events. I love the basement in this cabin!! As of 18 Aug, 2013, we now have a 2 person kayak and horseshoes for your enjoyment. As of July, 2016 we also have a brand new canoe!! And why get a hotel room when for a few dollars more you can cook, have more room, and invite all your friends??

Excellent

Cabin was as expected - appreciate having a clear description. Bedrooms are large, beds are comfortable. Owner was very responsive when we had questions. Due to a large amount of snow (yah!) we couldn't find the key to unlock the bear box in the driveway to leave the trash. We got the quick answer we needed (attached to the side of the box, just needed to be dug out). Also, we were glad to discover flat driving route from house to main road - Palisades to Pahatsi.

Cozy and Clean!

  • 4 of 5

This cabin is wonderful and very well kept and the owners are very responsive. It's a great price for a cabin at soda springs.

Couple of things to note:

There is no garage. There is enough space in the drive way for three cars so this would usually not be a problem but we had heavy snow fall and a night rain during our stay and the accumulated snow fell on our cars and dented the roof of one car and cracked a window of another. Again, would not have been an issue except for the El Niño snow condition.

There is only a wood burning stove and wall heaters for temperature control. The biggest negative of this was that the stove had to be on at all times but the wood burning stove and wall heaters do get hot to the touch and can be a burn hazard to little kids. It took us a couple of days to get the temperature inside the cabin just right. The first evening was too cold that night it got too hot... We could have read the directions better. Also, someone has to tend the fire which isn't too difficult but something to note.

We would love to return to this cabin and see it during the summer. The cabin was filled with all the little necessities like shampoo and detergent and it showed that the owners wanted their renters to feel like guests. This really was one of the best kept cabins we've been to at soda springs and I would recommend it highly.

Nice Place

  • 5 of 5

Everybody in the family, young and old alike enjoyed this cabin. It was warm, despite the cold outside. There were plenty of wood for the fireplace. They provided sledding gears which we put into good use. My husband liked the book collection. Other members of the family made a trip to Reno. The kitchen and bathroom was well stocked with supplies, we ended up not using the supplies we brought with us. We usually bring our own supplies because of our sad experience in other rental cabins. The owner was very nice to work with. He responded to emails in a very timely manner.

Cozy cabin

  • 5 of 5

Rick was wonderful to work with, he responds very quickly to my emails. The kitchen was well stocked with pots and pans and various spices. The kids loved watching the entire Star Wars saga during our stay. There was plenty of beds for everyone. The cabin have an electric water heater, there is always hot water for showers and cooking, big ++++. We would definitely come back again.

Wonderful cabin in the woods

  • 5 of 5

This house was wonderful and very roomy. It was close to ski resorts and a short drive to Truckee. The kids LOVED the sledding hill that was a short walk from the house! We will definitely be back next year!

Perfect setup for our family

  • 5 of 5

The setup of this house was perfect. Nice neighborhood of Serene Lakes, can walk and bike around. The house was definitely a bit old/outdated but perfect for a rental. The upstairs bedroom was large and has DVD player/TV/Netflix (as well as one down int eh living room). Perfect place for the kids to hang out. Plenty of room in the living room (the picture makes it look small, but it was plenty big). Loved the nice large square table that we could all fit around!

Notes:
The historic city of Truckee has many fine restaurants. One of my favorites is 'Burger Me' which serves awesome onion rings and Lagunitas beer on tap. Another favorite is Fifty-Fifty Brewing which has great brews and food. And of course, there is the Summit Restaurant located near fwy Exit 174.
