About the property

Perfect island cottage for a single or a couple seeking a get-away retreat. This is my second home and it is fully stocked with linens, kitchenware, beach gear, and everything you need to feel at home. It was remodeled and refurnished in 2014. The cottage is situated in a charming residential neighborhood within walking distance to grocery store, movie theaters, and unique shops. The beach, village, and galleries are a bike ride away. Artists, naturalists, writers, foodies, sailors, golfers, fishermen, beach bums...this is paradise.

Ideally, I prefer to rent for a 3-month minimum. At $1400/month, this is a bargain. (Taxes/security fees are not included in this price.) Contact me if interested. Please….No smokers, no pets, no peanuts.

About Kay Stahl

I currently live in the village on another island---Greenwich Village, Manhattan. I taught elementary school in GA for 27 years. I now teach at New York University. Today my work as a professor, literacy consultant, and author enables me to fulfill my lifelong commitment to helping kids become successful readers. I return to my cozy retreat and the warmth of my beloved island friends as often as possible.

Kay Stahl purchased this cottage in 1980

Why Kay Stahl chose Saint Simons Island

I lived in the Tabby Cottage from 1980-1997. I bought the cottage in 1980 from Sam Roberts, the owner and builder of the cottage. Then and now, Sam's masonry craftsmanship is evident throughout the home. Few homes today are as well-constructed. The tabby floors and stone exterior reflect the island's history. The home is embraced by the neighborhood's live oaks and Spanish moss. Turning into my street is immediately transporting. Going to sleep to the lullaby of crickets and cicadas and waking up to the singing birds lets me know that I am home.

We love Tabby Cottage and St. Simon's Island!

  • 5 of 5

Tabby Cottage was a wonderful place to be. The floor plan provided the perfect blend of spaciousness in the living room that flowed into the dining room and then the kitchen, as well as a lovely den and a private bedroom for times of peace and quiet. The furnishings and decor were pleasant and comfortable, and the spotlessly clean, well-maintained home was equipped with everything we needed. The bathroom was very nice with a large, world class shower.

The well-landscaped yard and outside surroundings were absolutely beautiful with tall live oaks, Spanish moss and palm trees, and a private backyard patio with a Camilla tree in full bloom.

The heat was quiet and comfortable, and the fireplace was terrific.

The listing information was accurate.

The owner and the rental agent were the icing on the cake. They were both extremely helpful and gracious, answering endless questions, providing tons of useful information, welcoming us with fresh flowers on the table (from the Camilla tree!) and inviting us to share books and food. Their willingness to be flexible with our travel dates made our drive from Maine much less stressful.

The one and only shortcoming was that the bed was too small for two people and had only two pillows and cumbersome bedding.

Our time on St. Simon's Island was filled with fun - biking, horseback riding, skeet shooting and canoe paddling as well as wonderful dining experiences in the local restaurants. St. Simon's and nearby Jekyll Island are spectacular in terms of natural beauty with a friendly diverse community that made us feel welcomed. We will (and already have) recommend Tabby Cottage with its unique character and many pleasures.

Owner's Response: I am so glad that you enjoyed your time at the cottage. The island is temperate and uncrowded during the winter months. There is currently a queen bed with luxury linens. The comforter on top of the light cotton blanket can always be used or removed as one sees fit. As someone who lives in NYC, I value a dark, quiet night's rest in a comfy bed when I arrive on the island. I hope you will return for another visit.
