About Diane Delafield
We moved to the mountains of Madison County in Mars Hill 30 years ago and was drawn to this land and river in 1993. The cottage is on the land where we live, we call it One Heart. Inspired by the natural beauty that surrounds it, we added many unique features to this cottage such as window seat in the living room, pine paneled den with wall of windows on the river and cathedral ceilings in the bedrooms. Our intention was to create a space of comfort, beauty and solace. It's our hope that those who come here will experience the same rejuvenating effect that renews our heart and Spirit daily.
Why Diane Delafield chose Mars Hill
I have always wanted to live on a river and this part of the river is exceptionally beautiful with a rock gorge across the river. It is quiet, private and peaceful...yet only 20 minutes from all Asheville has to offer and 10 minutes from some wonderful restaurants in Mars Hill and 15 minutes from the charming town of Weaverville. We have hosted many family vacations here as well as women's retreats.
What makes this Cottage unique
This land is quiet and peaceful and the sound of the river provides a scenic and harmonic background yet it is only 20 minutes from all Asheville has to offer. Great restaurants and shopping are only 10 minutes away in Mars Hill and 12 minutes from the charming town of Weaverville. Families with children will enjoy playing in the river, walking wooded paths and playing board games together on the window seat overlooking the river. Nearby is white water rafting, hiking and horse back riding. Biltmore Estate is 30 minutes away.

Cozy, secluded, and very warm cottage right on the river
We can't say enough good about this place. The location is a little drive north of Asheville, which makes it quiet, but still accessible to the city. The house itself is really perfect for a cottage on the water - it has plenty of space. Two nice sized bedrooms with a master suite. There is a separate room for tv, and plenty of common living space. Our trip was a bit rainy, so we didn't take advantage of the outdoors much, but they were great. A nice yard, an open field nearby, a deck that literally sits right over the water (at least it was when we were there, the water was up), and the stream running right by makes for a constant peaceful sound. Lastly, the owner, Diane, was spectacular. She was very helpful when we had questions, and left us alone when we didn't. She is the type of host we look for when renting a place. The place is well equipped, and clean. We are considering a trip back without our dogs to spend more time on the trails and mountains. It is a pretty romantic place if that's your goal.
Tranquil Home Away from Home--but even Better!
We stayed for a long weekend at Diane's lovely river retreat at One Heart. I have had a great deal on my plate recently with my father's passing and oldest son graduating from college. This was a perfect place to be with family yet have some space to reflect and heal, My 16 year old twins enjoyed skipping stones on the river and relaxing in an Eno they placed on trees on the deck. My husband and I enjoyed taking walks with the dog and reading while listening to the sound of the water. We even entertained my Mars Hill graduates' friends with tacos on the deck and s'mores by the fire-pit afterward. The family can not wait until we're able to return for another visit.
An amazingly peaceful oasis
It saddens me to have to leave here and return to the land of concrete and mayhem that is Chicago. My friends and I were searching for a relaxing place to stay near a stream or river outside of Asheville to unwind and appreciate. Diane’s place was more than perfect. I surprised my friend for her 40th birthday with this rental, and when she walked out on the deck and saw the water ramblin’ by, she had a little happy cry. We never wanted to leave. Diane was the perfect host, keeping in communication with us and giving little hints about what amazing things there are in the area. Next time we are around Asheville, we will be running to this place. Thank you for the perfect trip, Diane!
This place was magic! The sound of the stream to the wonderful hospitality!!
We loved our stay at One Heart and we plan to visit again! Diane had fresh flowers for us and cheese and crackers and fruit upon our arrival. The sound of the water in the stream below the deck made drinking coffee just so much better! The large nook overlooking the water in the family room was so relaxing & the location was close to downtown attractions we visited as well as the Biltmore. We all loved the off the beaten path and rural location. My sons want to make it a yearly tradition to come back and visit One Heart!! Thank you Diane!!
A relaxing time
We loved staying there. The river is right there. When we first arrived it had snowed making it look like so beautiful. We would have a fire at night. If you want to just relax this is the place to do it. I would recommend it to anyone.
You won't want to leave!
“Diane warned us that we would not want to leave.”
That was a week ago and is so true, but the experience here was past amazing, cathartic. Something about the warmth that emanates from every room here, the nature that comes through the windows, and the river, oh the river.
We looked at many properties for our getaway and this one stood out. So glad we followed our instincts.
On top of that this cottage has a Diane. She has created such a warm and intriguing space with her attention to detail and intention. Even to the point of making sure the feathers were removed (allergy issue)
You know sometimes when your on holiday and at the end you feel recharged and ready to get back in the game, this place does that.
This retreat is located 20 minutes from Asheville in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains with beautiful hikes, white water rafting, snow skiing, fishing, birding and the Blue Ridge Parkway just 30 minutes away. Downtown Asheville area restaurants are 20 minutes, Biltmore Estate is 30 minutes away. Also, charming towns of Mars Hill and Weaverville have wonderful shops and restaurants and only 10 and 15 minutes away.
