About Diane Delafield

We moved to the mountains of Madison County in Mars Hill 30 years ago and was drawn to this land and river in 1993. The cottage is on the land where we live, we call it One Heart. Inspired by the natural beauty that surrounds it, we added many unique features to this cottage such as window seat in the living room, pine paneled den with wall of windows on the river and cathedral ceilings in the bedrooms. Our intention was to create a space of comfort, beauty and solace. It's our hope that those who come here will experience the same rejuvenating effect that renews our heart and Spirit daily.

Why Diane Delafield chose Mars Hill

I have always wanted to live on a river and this part of the river is exceptionally beautiful with a rock gorge across the river. It is quiet, private and peaceful...yet only 20 minutes from all Asheville has to offer and 10 minutes from some wonderful restaurants in Mars Hill and 15 minutes from the charming town of Weaverville. We have hosted many family vacations here as well as women's retreats.

What makes this cottage unique

This land is quiet and peaceful and the sound of the river provides a scenic and harmonic background yet it is only 20 minutes from all Asheville has to offer. Great restaurants and shopping are only 10 minutes away in Mars Hill and 12 minutes from the charming town of Weaverville. Families with children will enjoy playing in the river, walking wooded paths and playing board games together on the window seat overlooking the river. Nearby is white water rafting, hiking and horse back riding. Biltmore Estate is 30 minutes away.

Relaxing retreat close to fishing, hiking and downtown Asheville

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at One Heart. Diane thought of every detail. She left crackers, cheese, chocolates and a nice note for us, and a water bowl, towels and dog treats for our two pups. The house truely felt like a retreat. It was far enough from the hustle and bustle but only 20 minutes from downtown Asheville. We enjoyed fishing in the creek behind the cottage and hiking the loop each morning. Its central location made it easy to access hiking, fishing and shopping in the surrounding towns as well. We are already planning out next stay at One Heart!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for this wonderful review...you are our first guests this spring! I'm glad you enjoyed everything so much and that the cottage truly felt like a retreat...that's my intention. I love sharing One Heart with guests...the river, walking paths through the woods and surrounding activities that Asheville, Weaverville and the Blue ridge Mountains offer. I look forward to your return!

Peaceful getaway, yet convenient to Asheville

  • 5 of 5

I have stayed at many VRBO locations, but none can compare to the warmth and hospitality of this home. My husband and I selected One Heart for our 25th Wedding Anniversary and we were welcomed with a lovely gift basket and card. Diane has gone out of her way to make this retreat as comfortable and relaxing as possible. I was impressed by how detailed her instructions were and her availability to me during our stay. Often times you read descriptions of rentals and then come to find that their definition of luxury linens is different than yours - but not at One Heart. Diane has lovely taste and decorates with intention. I highly recommend this retreat and will be going back again myself in a few months with my children. The drive to Asheville was quite easy, but we found we had no desire to leave the cottage!

Peaceful, relaxing family vacation

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here over the Christmas weekend for a little family getaway. We've never traveled for Christmas, so this was different for us. The cottage is a hidden gem with a river right outside. It was cozy and warm. Games were provided, the kitchen had all essentials. We stopped by the store for a few things such as breakfast food. There is a tv but it was rarely watched. Neighbors were friendly, there is a walking trail to explore. We took our dog and this was a nice trail to walk. The kids enjoyed the area as well. It was a really cold weekend but the cottage stayed plenty warm and we used the fireplace. We enjoyed exploring Asheville and a little hike off the parkway. Diane was a pleasure to deal with. No communication issues. We enjoyed our snacks as well that she left along with suggestions about the area. If you are looking for a nice peaceful time away this is the place.

Cozy Cottage Conducive for Comtemplation

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent four days at "One Heart" ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. This home is a perfect getaway for city dwellers looking to spend some quiet time in a warm, comfortable place that makes you feel like it's yours. Every convenience was at hand, fully stocked kitchen, proper wine crystal, throw pillows, blankets, a quaint wood stove and a never-ending gentle rush of water audible at all times. Very soothing.

Diane made certain we had full instructions (directions and house-specific details) and even met us at the main road at night to make sure we got there. It's tucked away, so that was a big help. But, we managed to navigate in the following days with no problem.

Weaverville and Mars Hill are very close with stores and restaurants. Asheville just about 25 minutes south.

The photos are exactly what you will find when you get there, but they don't quite capture the feeling you get when you walk in the door. Great place.

Thank you, Diane and please enjoy the two ceramic hearts.

Jonathan and Liz Blecher.

Who knew Heaven was so close?

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I were at this amazing home last week and poor Diane had to almost kick us out because we never wanted to leave! Everything about this place is perfection -- the grounds, the long, winding gravel path that takes you there, the river that never stays silent, the heart stones everywhere, all the treats that Diane leaves for you and your happy dog, the linens, the window seat, but perhaps more than anything, the delightful and kind Diane. You better rent this place while you can because my husband and I might just book it for the rest of our lives!

Peaceful and Private

  • 5 of 5

Very enjoyable stay. The house is not far off the highway, convenient to Asheville, but still has a good sense of privacy in a quiet, tree-surround. Evenings on the creek with bonfire are exquisite. Would definitely stay here again and can't wait!
