About Diane Delafield

We moved to the mountains of Madison County in Mars Hill 30 years ago and was drawn to this land and river in 1993. The cottage is on the land where we live, we call it One Heart. Inspired by the natural beauty that surrounds it, we added many unique features to this cottage such as window seat in the living room, pine paneled den with wall of windows on the river and cathedral ceilings in the bedrooms. Our intention was to create a space of comfort, beauty and solace. It's our hope that those who come here will experience the same rejuvenating effect that renews our heart and Spirit daily.

Why Diane Delafield chose Mars Hill

I have always wanted to live on a river and this part of the river is exceptionally beautiful with a rock gorge across the river. It is quiet, private and peaceful...yet only 20 minutes from all Asheville has to offer and 10 minutes from some wonderful restaurants in Mars Hill and 15 minutes from the charming town of Weaverville. We have hosted many family vacations here as well as women's retreats.

What makes this cottage unique

This land is quiet and peaceful and the sound of the river provides a scenic and harmonic background yet it is only 20 minutes from all Asheville has to offer. Great restaurants and shopping are only 10 minutes away in Mars Hill and 12 minutes from the charming town of Weaverville. Families with children will enjoy playing in the river, walking wooded paths and playing board games together on the window seat overlooking the river. Nearby is white water rafting, hiking and horse back riding. Biltmore Estate is 30 minutes away.

Relaxing retreat close to fishing, hiking and downtown Asheville

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at One Heart. Diane thought of every detail. She left crackers, cheese, chocolates and a nice note for us, and a water bowl, towels and dog treats for our two pups. The house truely felt like a retreat. It was far enough from the hustle and bustle but only 20 minutes from downtown Asheville. We enjoyed fishing in the creek behind the cottage and hiking the loop each morning. Its central location made it easy to access hiking, fishing and shopping in the surrounding towns as well. We are already planning out next stay at One Heart!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for this wonderful review...you are our first guests this spring! I'm glad you enjoyed everything so much and that the cottage truly felt like a retreat...that's my intention. I love sharing One Heart with guests...the river, walking paths through the woods and surrounding activities that Asheville, Weaverville and the Blue ridge Mountains offer. I look forward to your return!

Peaceful and Private

  • 5 of 5

Very enjoyable stay. The house is not far off the highway, convenient to Asheville, but still has a good sense of privacy in a quiet, tree-surround. Evenings on the creek with bonfire are exquisite. Would definitely stay here again and can't wait!

Beautiful River ~ Pretty Landscape

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful river, peaceful surroundings, comfy beds, perfect atmosphere for our Fall break vacation.

Diane (owner) couldn’t have been more gracious and helpful (my GPS dropped and directed us away from our route during the last few miles of getting there and Diane quickly got us back on track).

The kitchen is stocked with utensils and appliances for cooking, there are Ingles grocery stores in Mars Hill and Weaverville, and many other locations. Weaverville has a few wonderful coffee shops, restaurants and art studios. Asheville, a little further out has amazing food (I need to eat gluten free and found this to be no problem wherever I went). Asheville also has many sites, art galleries, museums, music and shops. You’ll find more tourists in Asheville.

We brought our bikes - there is plenty of outdoor activity to be found, if you want. We were content to enjoy the solitude this trip.

The property is pretty, the cottage warm and welcoming; wood stove, three outside deck levels, the gorgeous views, the sounds of the river and the sounds of Nature were a few of our favorite things.

We loved it here! We plan on returning. Would absolutely recommend this place to others.

Peaceful River Cottage Vacation

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I, plus our maltese, Kody, had the pleasure of staying at One Heart cottage on the Ivy River. What a fantastic experience! The cottage provided the perfect setting for relaxation, peace, and solitude while watching the blue heron, beaver, deer, and muskrats. We were able to sit on one of the three decks for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and listen to the bubbling river as the water moved over the rocks. This was also the perfect location to explore Ashville, Mars Hill, Weaverville, and the surrounding charming towns. If visiting Ashville, make sure to spend a day at Biltmore touring the house, gardens, and Antler Village. This is about 25 minutes from the One Heart Cottage. When you visit the charming town of Weaverville, just 10 minutes from the cottage, make sure to dine at the Glass Onion, the Creperie, and Well Bred Bakery! The quality of food is simply outstanding! There is a park in Weaverville that has trails and is wonderful! The little town of Mars Hill has the Mars Hill College campus which we strolled for exercise each morning. And make sure you try Stackhouse in Mars Hill. The home smoked brisket was some of the best we have ever had. After all the excursions head back to your peaceful river cottage to unwind and relax. The owner of the cottage has made sure you want for nothing and you'll have a wonderful memorable vacation!

Property lovely as described. Warm welcome by Diane.

Being seniors we found the steep steps a little challenging, also prefer harder beds. However, the location right on the Ivy River was superb and relaxing. The choice of 3 decks was a pleasant surprise.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. I enjoyed having you all as guests and loved hearing your music. Your feedback about liking harder mattresses was important to me and so I removed the feather bed (I like the coziness of feathers but it was topping a new firm mattress). That may be better for most people. Hope to see you again!
