About Katherine Rice

We bought this property about 10 yrs ago and lived in Colorado Springs and we enjoyed the beauty of this area. We moved out to Rapid City South Dakota. We wanted others to enjoy this beautiful area so were renting it out with VRBO.

Katherine Rice purchased this cabin in 2005

Why Katherine Rice chose South Central

This is a beautiful property on the top of the mountain with views of the Sangre de Cristo mountains and Pikes Peak. Close to a lot of 14000 foot mountains if you like to hike those. Very peaceful with no electric poles and wires, it is an off grid cabin so it runs on solar and generator power.

Not far from Woodland Park with movie theaters and grocery stores and Cripple Creek with trains, gold mines and many attractions of the old west.

What makes this cabin unique

The stars are amazing with the Milky Way right there. It is remote enough so there is very little light pollution and it has 4 acre's for privacy and lots of good hiking.

The house made a for a lovely getaway. The house has tons of space for larger parties. Views out every window, stars, and silence. Definitely on our list to stay again.

Great stay!

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a wonderful time at the Rice cabin. It met our needs well. We were very comfortable and found what we needed stocked there. The location was central to many activities we enjoyed. The home was clean and had plenty of bedding, towels, etc. Thanks to the Rice family for sharing their home with us!

Remote and quiet

  • 4 of 5

My family really loved the house. The area is perfect. Cool mountain air with some hiking/ exploring available. The house fit our group of 11 nicely with everyone having their own bed.

(The loft is very bright in the morning). It is a bit off the beaten path, but that is a good thing.

Overall, It isn't for the 5 star hotel types, but it suited us very well. The solar/generator wasn't much of an issue. Due to a cloudy day and our kids overuse of laptops/phones, the generator had to do some extra work. We could hear it at night, but it wasn't loud enough to cause problems sleeping. The water pressure is low, so if someone is taking a shower it will be noticed if anyone runs the kitchen sink water/ dishwasher / clothes washer. Thanks to the owners for building a nice house in a great location and allowing us to use it. -Bronson family

Enjoyable experience at the cabin

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at the cabin immensely. The cabin was everything we hoped for, and easily accommodated our group of 12 people. The kitchen was nicely stocked with tableware and cookware allowing us to prepare some of our meals on site.

Being off grid was not a problem, the solar panel and generator provide all the electricity we needed.

Check-in was a breeze with detailed driving instruction to find the property as well as instructions where to find the keys to unlock the cabin.

A few items that could be improved: additional wash cloths, there where plenty of towels but for a group of 12 we ran short of wash cloths . The master bedroom mattress could use a bit of help. but over all our experience was very positive. Thanks for a great rental experience, we would definitely rent this cabin again in the future.

Great

  • 5 of 5

Property was exactly as we expected. Plenty of room for adults and kids. Only downfall was that the loft king bedroom got very warm every morning as there are no shades on the large windows to the east. Kitchen was well stocked with condiments etc. but bring your own coffee pot. The only coffee pot was the old fashioned drip type heated on the stove. (I don't even know what to call it!!) We went back to Colorado Springs to get a regular coffee pot from our daughter's house. Everything was very clean. WiFi was very good. We would return if we head to that area again.
