Overview

About the property

Charming, airy, art-filled one-bedroom casita with sunny roof terrace

"Duende” is a Spanish word that loosely translates to mean the transcendent emotional-physical-spiritual state achieved by flamenco dancers and musicians at the peak of artistic expression; it also refers to a fairy or goblin-like creature in Latin American mythology. Casa Duende, with its quirky shapes, vibrant colors and jungle-like garden is designed to inspire creativity.

The owners of the property, Gina and Dave, live in the casa grande with their English Springer Spaniel dog named Goose. The casita is located across a small brick patio from the main house.

The casita has a sky blue bedroom, bright Talavera tiled bathroom, a full kitchen, and light-drenched open living area. There's an extensive library of books and lots of folk art.

Casita guests have access to the roof terrace garden and washer and dryer. There's WiFi and cable television.

Casa Duende is located in the Colonia Guadalupe neighborhood, a flat 10-minute walk to the Centro or to the Fabrica la Aurora art and design center.

One wakes up to the sound of church bells, chirping birds, crowing roosters, barking dogs and often fireworks (exploded in honor of all manner of saints). Please note: this is the soundtrack of Mexico. If you are especially sensitive to noise and these things make you cranky, ours is not the rental for you.

Also, please note that we have a dog, so you need to like dogs if you rent our casita.

We have a one-week minimum stay policy, but if there is last-minute availability, we may consider three-day rentals.

The rent includes housekeeping three times per week by Delia (who you can also hire to bake amazing pastel de tres leches cakes if you like), gardener Faustino two times per week (he sweeps the bougainvillea blossoms off the terrace and keeps the plantings lush), and on-call assistance from our charming, handy, and helpful bilingual property manager, José. Since we are on site, we are also available to help with anything that comes up.

Note: some of the reviews are from before we lived at the property full time, so they talk about both the casa grande and casita.

About Owner/Property Manager

Our family's San Miguel de Allende roots stretch back to the late 1950s, when Gina's mother, Leigh, who was a well-known artist, earned her MFA in painting from the Instituto Allende. We love the color, music, cultural traditions, and humane pace of life in Mexico.

Why Owner/Property Manager chose Colonia Guadalupe

The Colonia Guadalupe neighborhood is wonderful. It's artsy, tranquil, and an easy 10-minute walk to the historic Centro. Unlike some San Miguel neighborhoods that feel like suburbs of the United States, Colonia Guadalupe is still full of Mexican families. During the past few years, it's also become foodie central with the establishment of Via Organica. There's an art supply store near the house and dozens of street murals adorn the neighborhood thanks to the Guadalupe Art District organization.

What makes this house unique

We built Casa Duende to serve as a creative family compound. It took a year and half to build. Dave oversaw the jazz-like process -- the builders drew the outlines of the rooms with sticks in the dirt and no power tools were used to construct the buildings. Even the ladders were made by hand, so the house is full of soul and personality.

Wonderful cottage in great location with warm and gracious hosts!

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is very comfortable, with wonderful color and art throughout. There were three of us, and the 3rd person used the little bed behind the screen, which was comfortable and private. The location is excellent and we walked everywhere comfortably. The hosts were gracious, friendly and helpful, making sure we had everything we need and giving tips on things in town we might be interested in. We hope to come back and stay longer!

Artistic casita

  • 5 of 5

This charming colorful casita felt like it was tailor made for me... looking for home for a few weeks - trying my hand at art, spending time in the centro, about a 12 minute walk, sightseeing, listening to music, arttoursSMA, ...lots close by (via organica!). The house was so comfortable and well thought out with details it was easy just to hang out there; loved the upstairs patio, very relaxing. Loved Moose the dog, there to greet me. Dave and Gina are wonderful hosts. I would definitely come back again..

Bright, inspiring haven

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely perfect oasis of succulents and art and bright colors in San Miguel. Casa Duende is a truly authentic artist's haven within walking distance of the city's gems. We visited during the Dia de los Muertos festivities and were greeted with a warm welcome. The casa itself is amazing; brightly colored walls, original artwork, beautiful high-ceilinged rooms, tile everywhere. Is a writer's paradise, especially if you can sneak away up to the rooftop veranda with your coffee.

Really enjoyed this stay

  • 5 of 5

We were more pleased with every step we took into the garden toward the casa! Brightly painted rooms with traditional decorations, lovely paintings, interesting ceilings and lots of windows/skylights everywhere in the house were a pleasant surprise. We did lots of walking with the casa being stratigically placed a nice stroll from the center of the city. We did not cook, but the kitchen appeared to be fully stocked with the necessary items...including a water cooler to refill our personal bottles. Our every need was given immediate attention by Jose and company. Very nice!

Lovely art-filled oasis

  • 5 of 5

We just spent a week in San Miguel de Allende at Casa Duende and would highly recommend it. The house is even lovelier than the photos - so colorful and dramatic. We had everything we could need for a perfect Mexican holiday. Jose and Delia were very welcoming and we enjoyed a home cooked meal from Delia with tamales and a tres leche cake. Gina was particularly helpful - responding quickly to my queries and making the rental process easy. We fell in love with the tin lamp in the dining room and Gina connected us with the artist in town who delivered one to our door to take home with us.The nearby Via Organica grocery and cafe was a hit - had several good meals there. We look forward to returning someday soon to SMA.

Artist Heaven

  • 5 of 5

This is not just a house, it's an art museum and inspiring studio all rolled into one. Beautiful, GORGEOUS rooms painted in bright juicy colors, every detail beautiful and whimsical. The casita (art studio) was seriously inspiring, and my daughters and I painted and wrote into the wee hours. The care taking family, Delia and Jose and Faustino, are kind and attentive to one's every need. They really go above and beyond!! The neighborhood is quiet and close enough to the Jardin (center of town) to easily walk, and yet not in the MIDST of it all. Wonderful natural food grocer/cafe just around the corner (Via Organica). Wonderful fresh hot tortillas down the street. Fish market (we made the best meal from fresh caught fish!) a few blocks down. I can't wait to return and am going to bring all of my writer and artist buddies with me!
