About Liz Bortniak
My husband, Don, and I moved here from Lake Worth, Florida. My husband grew up in Herkimer, NY while I spent most of my life in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. We love Virginia and look forward to our new adventure here.
Liz Bortniak purchased this Cottage in 2013
Why Liz Bortniak chose Galax
We were spellbound with the beauty of this property and bought it at an auction in 2012. The history of the original builder/owner, Thomas L. Felts in 1904, is really fascinating as is the beauty of this land and the charming area of Galax.
What makes this Cottage unique
Access to New River Trail is literally runs through our property. We have our own beautiful little private hide-away pavilion located on Chestnut Creek. It is a great place to relax, read a book, dine or fish.

Amazing place to stay!!!
This place from the first moment you pull in is a WOW! The scale house was super clean and beautifully decorated and had all your needs and wants. The view is gorgeous and so quiet. We loved the access to the new river trail. Also, the location is perfect we went to Wytheville, Mt. Airy and Lover’s Leap so when you are tired of bicycling hop on the motorcycle and hit the Blue Ridge Parkway. Liz and her husband were so helpful and responded immediately to us. Also, the wine, cheese and crackers were a very nice touch that gave you that welcoming feeling. We definitely hope to come back soon. Thank you so much for allowing us to stay and feel welcome in your home. I would love to give it more than 5 stars!! ⭐️
It was perfect in every way! We hope to return and visit again!
We loved the house and property!
Perfect retreat from a hectic life
This spot was a great place to decompress and get out onto the local trails. The whole property is pristine. The cottage was very well decorated and comes with just about everything you would need. And if you feel that isn't enough, downtown Galax is a few minutes drive away. The owners (Liz & Don) are incredibly accommodating and try to make your stay as carefree as possible. I'm looking forward to spending another couple days in the near future.
Peaceful Cottage next to New River Trail
We loved staying in this charming, well decorated cottage. We took day trips on our bicycles and evening strolls along the New River Trail which runs right by the house. In the evening, deer grazed in the pasture in the side yard. A delightful, peaceful cottage to spend a relaxed vacation away from it all.
A Hidden Gem
This place is a real hidden gem! Love the open space layout and all of the nicer appointments (towels, bottle of wine with cheese and crackers, dishes, pillows - perfect for a couple. Your stress will melt away in moments sitting on the porch watching dear come out of the woods and hang out in the big field or the occasional hiker/biker on the New River Trail that runs right along the property. Neat and clean - small enough to be cozy - big enough to be comfortable. Ideal location for active hikers/bikers - easy drive to center of Galax. Already trying to figure out an excuse to get back. And Liz is a wonderful host.
We are adjacent to the New River Trail and Chestnut Creek at mile marker 2. New River Trail is recognized as one of the top 10 mountain bike trails in the country. August is an exciting time in Galax, which is when they host the Old Fiddler's Convention.
