About Rita Olschewski

We bought this home 8 years ago and loved the quiet location. There is a stream near by for trout fishing and we built a tree fort. As they got older they wanted to be on a lake, so we built another house on Lake Toxaway where we spend our summer and fall. We still go up to the cabin for hiking and mushroom picking.

Rita Olschewski purchased this house in 2005

Why Rita Olschewski chose Smoky Mountains

This home has fantastic views through huge windows. Even though we are in the woods, there is lots of sun on the porches and lawn. The property is surrounded by woods and National Forest.

What makes this house unique

We fell in love with the quiet serenity of this home. The water fall trails nearby are awesome and Tony's free guided hikes every other Friday make it accessable to every one.

Guestbook comments from the owner

It was an excellent stay. Thank you. It was a phenominal time even though my motorcycle could not handle the driveway. My family enjoyed it very much.

Great time. Wonderful property

  • 5 of 5

It had everything we needed for a great time away from it all. The only thing we couldn't find was the iron to go with the ironing board but that might have just been an oversight on our behalf. Will definitely consider coming back here again.

Great place. Great location.

  • 4 of 5

Picturesque, comfortable, quiet (save the soothing chirping of the cicadas), which made sleeping even more enjoyable during our late summer stay with the windows open.

Everything you need for a mountain getaway. The only reason for 4 stars and not 5 is that the Direct TV package did not include ESPN. I know many who don't need TV when vacationing and I seldom do either (except during football season) so I was slightly disappointed that I missed my Gamecocks Saturday night.

I would highly recommend Rita's Hideaway, and (aside from the ESPN issue, oh and maybe some new paddles for the ping pong table), I wish I could have stayed longer.

Will definitely stay there again.

Perfect Getaway for birthday Surprise

  • 5 of 5

This was a perfect location for my husband's surprise 70th birthday. Our kids came from New Jersey, Kansas City, and central North Carolina. The house is gorgeous with the warm all wood interior, soaring ceilings and large windows. Views were great to watch weather change from sun to rain, to fog, and clear at night for moon and star gazing. The house is extremely well equipped, both kitchen-wise and beds/baths and specific instructions/labels made everything easy. The drive up is an adventure but well worth it. Our gang went zip lining at The Gorge in Saluda which was awesome. Plenty to do in the area, or just sit back and relax in quiet peace. Definitely recommend.

Fantastic views with peace and quiet

  • 4 of 5

Rita's hideaway is located on very private land on top of a mountain. Get this if nothing else: the views are spectacular! I can only imagine how beautiful it is during autumn.

Now, all that beauty and privacy comes at a price: it's a long and somewhat harrowing drive to town, especially if you are driving a larger vehicle or get car sick. It's about 30-35 minutes to the nearest grocery store in Brevard. In fact, just getting down the mountain is 15-20 minutes.

The cabin itself is great. Soaring ceilings and windows in every room allow you to take in that view. The small kitchen is well stocked with cooking and serving. The only things we couldn't find were an ice cream scoop and a non-metal spatula.

A nice sized open deck out front, screened deck out back, ping pong table in the garage, large fire pit with wood, all make for active and passive relaxation. My kids got up at 6 am to walk one of Rita's trails to a sunrise overlook.

Two bedrooms in the main floor offered comfortable beds and plenty of space. The loft was great for our girls sleeping arrangements. Bathrooms were immaculate and well equipped with towels and such. Downstairs rooms definitely had basement smell, but we're clean and functional. The main floor great room had plenty of seating, but don't plan to get comfy on the sofa...it's not too comfortable with a very low back that everyone found a bit awkward to sit on. Dining space was small but we fit 7 at the table with a little juggling. The large peninsula counter added space for 2-3 more comfortably. A large round table and chairs sits on the screened porch just off the dining room.

Last point for peace of mind...Rita's caretakers. We had a problem with a smoke detector beeping. You know, when the battery gets low. Normally, I'd just deal with that myself. I even tried to reach it with the ladder I found in the garage. But this one was high on the wall; I just couldn't get to it. So, I called Rita's local contact. They came right over to change the battery. The took care of it and left. 10 minutes later, it started beeping again. I called them back and left a message. 30 minutes later they were back. I felt bad calling them again, but they assured me they'd rather have the call during daylight. It was comforting to know that responsive help was a phone call away.

While we'd probably choose something a bit closer to town next time, if you're looking for a lot of space and tranquility for a larger group, stay here.

Great weekend at the Hideaway!

  • 5 of 5

Rita's house was fantastic! We had 10 guys up for the weekend and even with constant rain, the house was perfect. The open living room/kitchen was a great space for entertaining our big crowd, and there was plenty of room to sleep everyone comfortably. Looking forward to hopefully going back here!
