Dillard's Pool House in the heart of what was once Bette Davis' Country Estate

Property type guest house
Minimum Stay 1 - 2 nights

Overview

About the property

Spacious one bedroom, semi-detached house in Griffith Park, Hollywood, studios

The scent of lavender drifts in the charming sash windows of the LIVING ROOM and KITCHEN. You can also see the pool, lawn and hummocks and beyond that the foothills of Griffith Park and the horse trails of Mount Hollywood (we are directly behind the HOLLYWOOD sign). The room is light and airy with cool tile floor. The huge couch fills the space, defined by the curved moldings and whitewashed walls. The 32" TV has both digital cable (with the movie package) and Apple TV. The Moroccan lights and original art make Dillard's Pool House perfect for relaxing after a long day and splash in the pool. The kitchen is small but functional with a dishwasher, stove, oven, sink and such. There is Wi-Fi throughout the estate.

You enter the historic ESTATE through the original riverside gate of Bette Davis' house Riverbottom. Dillard's Pool House is in the heart of the estate with the salt water pool and hot tub on your doorstep. Named after one of Bette Davis' favorite leading men; Preston Dillard played by Henry Fonda in the famous 1938 movie Jezebel.

A patterned couch on the VERANDA looks out to a field of French Lavender planted as a maze to walk through. The very large, drought tolerant organic garden is an oasis. The blue of the pool in the lush green lawn. Then the yellow of the flowers and flowing ornamental grasses, it feels like the dunes at the beach.

The BEDROOM has air conditioning and a queen bed and comfy headboard; perfect to tuck in to a juicy novel or a late night movie on the Apple TV at the foot of the bed. The light from the Moroccan lamp patterns the walls. It has plenty of closet space and a desk to write letters home on.

The BATHROOM is huge. Large enough to entertain in while you lounge in the bathtub! There is a washing machine and a dryer, (although in Southern California the clothes dry just as fast on the rack as in the machine)

The estate has a number of houses available through VRBO. The interior space is exclusive to this listing. The exterior is shared with the other guests staying in the houses on the estate.

All the houses on the estate enjoy massive organic gardens, almost half acre of garden with an abundance of butterflies and birds. The lawn surrounds the saltwater pool and spa, fire pit and grill. The art studio is where I offer a Painting Experience https://www.airbnb.com/experiences/65880. We also have a garden bathroom with outdoor shower, covered seating area, a couple of outdoor dining areas, sun deck, large shade trees, hammocks and café tables, fountain area, fruit orchard, vegetable garden. A maze of French Lavender for children to solve and Wi-Fi throughout. You can often find me planting or watering, things are growing and changing. Our photos are current and we update them regularly.

Please don't let the rural setting and the hooting of the owls fool you, we are still in the heart of the city and you should be aware that you can sometimes hear the freeway, helicopters, dogs and sirens typical of city living. I mention it because it seems out of place while you lounge in the sun on the lawn feeling like you are out in the country.

O'Leary's Cabin http://vrbo.com/465113which is at the far end of the estate and shares a roof line with the original stable block. It was named after Humphrey Bogart’s character Michael O’Leary, the knowing stableman in Dark Victory

Dillard's Pool House http://www.vrbo.com/488798 is in the heart of the estate. Named after one of Bette Davis' favorite leading men; Preston Dillard played by Henry Fonda in the famous 1938 movie Jezebel.

Channing House is also two bedrooms and is at the far front of the grounds http://www.vrbo.com/479934 . Named after Margo Channing, Bette Davises’ larger than life character in All About Eve 1951;

Guest interaction

Rivergate is our country house, my family and I stay in all of the houses (it is helpful for me to know how they function as holiday homes first hand). The grounds are large enough that the house is private. With the added bonus of friends and fellow travelers nearby to make friends with. When we are not staying in one of the houses we are just over the hill in Hollywood at Sunset Ranch. It is helpful that I am right here to answer questions or fix anything that may arise.

I won the Airbnb Hero Award and take my role as host very seriously. I take your happiness and wellbeing personally and am honored to facilitate this community of travelers sharing this great estate.

Other things to note:

We charge a high cleaning fee. This is for the standard cleaning that we do before each guest and the small repairs, repainting, replacing damaged furniture, rugs, upholstery and minor fixes. We all break things and spill. It isn't very pleasant to have a lovely holiday only to get in to the nitty gritty of broken glasses or wall scratches at the end of it. These things happen and the second half of the cleaning fee goes toward the repairman.

We do not host parties. The grounds and shared space is monitored 24/7. We also have recording security cameras.

Getting Around:

Nobody walks in LA... you can, but people don't. They drive to Griffith Park and hike.

One can walk to many restaurants. Because we are in the midst of many of the studios, Uber and Lyft cruise the area, you can get a ride in minuets any time of day. We are very close to 5 and 134 freeways for easy access to most of LA and the valley.

We have great bus and train access, but again, people in LA drive.

You can also bike. There are dedicated lanes on the road and along the river, or you can ride a horse here! You can book a ride from Sunset Ranch

Why Amy B chose Riverside Rancho

The NEIGHBORHOOD upscale and residential. Many of the large houses have private stables and it is common to see cowboys riding in the streets. We are just a few miles from Los Feliz, Silver Lake and Atwater (two exits on the freeway, about 5 minutes). We are bicycling distance from the studios (NBC, CBS, Warner Bros, Disney, Nickelodeon …). Additionally, there are four golf courses very near, as well as Travel Town, the LA Zoo, The Autry Museum, several horse riding facilities and playgrounds, Pickwick ice-skating and bowling and of course the wildlife and 52 miles of hiking and horse riding trails in Grffith Park.

Don’t let the rural setting and the hooting of the owls fool you, we are still in the heart of the city and you should be aware that you can sometimes hear the freeway, helicopters, dogs and sirens typical of city living. I mention it because it seems out of place while you lounge in the sun on the lawn feeling like you are out in the country.

Amy warmly welcomed us into her sweet haven in LA's horse country with provisions in our fridge and a loaf of home-baked bread to ease the transition of arriving late at night in a strange city...the pool house is cheerful and functional, the pool itself refreshing and the big green lawn with shade trees the perfect view from our patio. We loved the energy of young children and other guests with whom we shared this large property. Amy's concern for our comfort was reflected in her responding quickly to our questions and in filling our requests.

We feel very fortunate to have found this gem!

Great for a large-family stay

  • 4 of 5

Ten or so of us family members, all adults, were in Los Angeles for a wedding nearby. The collection of buildings on the estate was perfect for a combination of singles and married couples with adult children. Those who tried the salt-water pool and hot tub loved them. The main building and the outbuildings were well maintained and clean. My only quibble would be that some of the outside furniture was sandy or gritty. The owner provided adequate instructions for using the television, wi-fi, etc., and she was clearly available for questions and help. I liked the "horsey-ness" of the neighborhood, including the occasional braying of the donkey next door.

Relaxing Retreat

  • 5 of 5

The setting is amazing. I felt like I stepped back in time. The location is perfect and the hospitality is out of this world. We were welcomed with fresh fruit, flowers, and a cute pumpkin. Everything was immaculately cleaned. And if we ever needed anything, our requests were answered quickly via emails or texts. We slept well and being a single mom traveling with my son, I felt safe at all times. He thanked me for "a real vacation" as it didn't feel fake or industrialized. It felt like home. I would definitely recommend this location not only because I'm a fan of Bette Davis and Mr Dillard, but because we were well taken care of in this bustling location filled with so many tourists - it became our oasis and safe place.

Loved staying at Dillard’s Pool House. It’s a lovely design with a Spanish hacienda feel. Would come back in a heartbeat. It had everything we needed to make the experience easy and enjoyable.

Perfect LA getaway on fabulous grounds!

  • 5 of 5

Amelia was the most gracious host and Dillard's poolhouse was everything we were looking for. The pool was perfect to swim in with our little family and the compound was a great size to interact with other guests but not too big it would feel crowded. We will be back!

Ideal setting and location!

  • 5 of 5

Thank you so much for letting us be guests at your Dillard house! We were so happy to have found a place that was safe, comfortable, relaxing and convenient . We were appreciative of the pool and hot tub as we used them each day/night. Amy, the owner, was so very helpful and prompt in answering any questions that we had. We hope to stay at your place again some time soon!

The City is redeveloping the LA River and there are great cycling trails and running tracks throughout the neighborhood. Downtown Los Angeles is about 15 minutes away, depending a little on the famous LA traffic (there is a shortcut through the park along Riverside Drive that is very pretty and cuts out the traffic). Burbank and Glendale are home to loads of shopping including the Americana (a high end outdoor mall with fountain, fine restaurants and events) big box stores are just a few miles away in Burbank and Pavilions supermarket is one of the finest around and well within walking distance.
