About the property

2 bedroom, 3+ bathroom home in historic center close to everything

After strolling San Miguel de Allende’s cobblestone streets, shopping for local arts and crafts, sitting in the Jardin watching the townspeople and eating ice cream, return to the charm and tranquility that is Casa Cantera.

Casa Cantera is a two-bedroom, three and a half bath home located on a quiet cul-de-sac in the Centro Historico, with easy access to all that San Miguel has to offer. Tastefully decorated with a mixture of traditional materials and contemporary art, the house is bright, comfortable and welcoming with an open concept first floor featuring living and dining, a fully-equipped cook’s kitchen and a lush patio complete with a bubbling fountain. A wide stone staircase leads up to two large bedrooms, each with generous closet space, reading areas and en suite full traditionally tiled baths. The third floor features a breezy partially covered terrace with full bath and a cozy studio room. The terrace is the ideal place for cocktails and conversation, al-fresco dining or watching twilight settle over San Miguel while sipping a Margarita. On-site services include housekeeping 3 times a week, Wifi broadband DSL internet, cable television and free long distance calls anywhere in the world on the house Vonage line.

Casa Cantera boasts a perfect location in a safe, family oriented neighborhood where neighbors are welcoming and children safely run and play. For the cook, meat, produce, fresh tortillas and beverages can be purchased within a five minute walk from the house. The historic artisan's market is less than five minutes' walk away and the Fabrica Aurora, known for its antique shops and artists' galleries and studios, is a ten minute walk. Within five to ten minutes flat walking, you can find cafes, restaurants and bars with something for every taste.

About Laura Zuñiga

After visiting our cousins in San Miguel for six years, my husband and I finally decided to get a place of our own to share with friends and relax far away from our hectic lives. I'm an artist and professor, and my husband is in financial services IT, now living and working in Chicago, so we love to get away and relax, read, write, and spend hours in conversation with the many friends we've made in the friendly San Miguel community.

Laura Zuñiga purchased this house in 2012

Why Laura Zuñiga chose San Miguel de Allende

Aside from the fact that San Miguel de Allende is simply my favorite city in the world, we chose our property because of its welcoming, bright, warm, colorful charm. After visiting homes in other neighborhoods, I realized that Casa Cantera is perfectly located to partake in all that San Miguel has to offer. Less than 5 minutes flat walk puts you in the artisan's market and large produce market. 5 more minutes has you in the Jardin, the center of the historic district, where you can sit on a bench reading the daily paper or watching the comings and goings of San Miguel's many residents and visitors. Dozens of excellent restaurants are within comfortable walking distance and if you get tired, $3 buys you a taxi ride anywhere in the center. Our neighborhood is friendly and family oriented and our terrace is breezy and comfortable day and night, all year round.

What makes this house unique

Casa Cantera is decorated with a wide variety of artworks from Mexican, Canadian and American contemporary artists.

Guestbook comments from the manager

I want to thank you for allowing us to use your lovely home! This is my third week here and the first two weeks have flown by.

Casa Cantera is just perfect for us! You have thought of everything a guest could need or want from hair dryers, well stocked kitchen, soft towels and plenty of bed linens, and lovely terraces for eating and reading al fresco. The furnishings are comfortable and the art is lovely.

You were right about Laura, she has been so professional and prompt in her replies to our questions. You have a good person here in SMA!

My good friend and I had great first two weeks together here, walking and stepping into every (and I mean every) shop and church. I took of week of intensive Spanish classes at the nearby Academia Hispano-Americana and I would recommend it to others.

I am now here with my husband and our good friends and we are strolling and eating our way thru SM. So far the hands-down best restaurant is The Restaurant. Yesterday we spent a perfect quiet sunny day at La Gruta.

A high point for my husband and me was a personal tour by Bill ( and then a second talk from his wife Heidi on Mexican folk art) at the spectacular Mexican Mask Museum and beautiful B and B / home Casa de la Cuesta. Bill is clearly captivated (I think the word he used was obsessed) by these Mexican Dance Masks and his love and knowledge of the ethnography and anthropological roots of these fabulous masks. If you have not done this museum just up the hill from the market nearby, it is well worth it! We also did the Biblioteca House Tours twice each time to very interesting and beautiful homes.

Again, thanks for sharing your home with use. I know I would like to come back and I think my friends may also tell friends about this house.

All the best,

A Toast to Our Return!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Casa Cantera was all we hoped it would be. The house is Mexican modern with an artsy flair. We loved the open flow of the downstairs. We enjoyed listening to music on our iPods, watching television on the comfy sofa, and reading while "tucked-in" to the cozy sunken living room.

We fixed ourselves a bite in the fully equipped kitchen with its window opening onto the bright patio and enjoyed snacking at the traditional Mesquite wood table.  We checked our email and sent photos to friends back home on that same large table as well.  I must say we liked the way the entire downstairs basks in the abundant light from the glass wall of the open staircase.

The location couldn't be better!  We stepped out the door of this quiet house and into the colorful life of a Mexican town.   We liked that San Miguel remains colonial and traditional while offering all the necessities and desires of modern life. We walked to the art galleries and theaters for world class entertainment, to the little cafes and fine restaurants for a broad array food choices, and to the square at night to hear the mariachis play!  We shopped for dazzling silver, happy clothing, and charming folk art. When we were well satisfied or just plain tired, we headed for our home away from home, Casa Cantera, and relaxed in the flower-filled patio.

In the evenings we watched the sunset from the large third-floor terrace, margarita or red wine in hand. Then we went to bed and slept soundly while dreaming of cobbled streets and food--enchiladas, agua frescas, tres leches!  The mornings found us planning our return to Casa Cantera and San Miguel where the people are warm and friendly, the streets are lively, and the weather is pleasant year round. This time we will bring enough family or friends along to fill the three bedrooms!
